I wasn't 100% happy with skins I found so I decided to take screenshots of the DS home menu with an emulator and build a skin around it. I'm not 100% sure if I have the colours right in YSMenu.ini but I think it looks pretty good. Critique welcome.

Hi everyone! First of all I want to to say I'm really impressed by all the work put into these kernels! These unofficial updates completely changes the possibilities for the old carts left abandoned by the manufacturers. So... I've been lurking around GBAtemp on and off since the early days (before v2 I think?). I can't believe it's only now I create an actual account here! And that my first question would be such typical noob question. I hope this is the right place to post it.

I recently got hold of a cheap-ish DS lite (currently replacing the shell) and began looking for a suitable flashcart. I mainly want to try scummvm and snemulds/lolsnes, but good rom compatibility (and moonshell) would be nice as well. At first I was looking at getting a R4 (1:1 clone) and use wood, but old sd cards seem hard to find (and quite expensive). From what I can tell, this kernel on a dstt or a (sdhc) r4 clone might be a good fit.

To cut to the chase: I've been considering the following two cards, and would be interested in knowing if they are supported (and if one is recommended over the other):
* "R4-SDHC upgrade" (by r4i-sdhc.com): http://www.nds-card.com/ProShow.asp?ProID=143
* DSTT (by... cndstt.com?): http://www.nds-card.com/ProShow.asp?ProID=157

(nds-card.com - gotta support those who supports us, right? I'll order there unless some other store has an extremely good deal...)

Both cards cost about the same ($7.99) and - from what I can tell - at least the r4-sdhc seems to be supported (though not explicitly listed under the r4i-sdhc.com category any more). The cndstt on the other hand seems unusual... I assume the underlying hardware of both is quite similar. Is there some difference in hardware/firmware (affecting stability, compatibility) or similar? Would the r4-sdhc be the better choice?

... Or am I just going to regret not buying the r4i gold (or r4idsn) right away? It feels a bit overkill for my needs -I don't (and never will) need DSi or 3DS support, nor do I feel the need for RTS right now. I'm also not sure how much I will be using the DS. I got it because it was a good deal and I always wanted to try one. Compared to the mileage I've gotten out of my old EZF Advance and GBASP, I'm just not sure yet if I'll be using the DS enough to go for a more expensive cart. But I've heard the gold is good. If there would be some more selling-point for the gold for me as a simple DS user, I'd go for it.

Oh, and sorry for so much text for such a simple question. And I hope this was the right place to post it...
Have a nice day everyone!

Since you sound interested in homebrew check out this one: http://www.nds-card.com/ProShow.asp?ProID=507. Only a buck more and since it runs Wood it also has support for nitroFS homebrew. Otherwise you'll have to run them through HBmenu first unless it's a supercard.

Oh yeah, the commercial game compatibility is great too:creep:

ps mod should move this to a new thread if possible, it may be too off-topic here.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, maybe it's a bit off topic. I mainly posted it here because I wanted to see if any of those two cards are supported by this kernel. I should probably not continue this tangent here, but from what I can tell it only runs a modified version of wood? Quite frankly I would prefer reliable official wood support (but yes, nitrofs is appealing). But doesn't it have a kill-switch/time-bomb? I don't want to give money to a company with that kind of tactics...

(Also I did notice this sale : http://www.nds-card.com/ProShow.asp?ProID=569 but I just ignored it. Doesn't seem to support in any way wood either. .... or?)

That card (and all recent cards that say "r4isdhc.com" run a menu based on TT. They also suffer from the "timebomb". They do run YSmenu and if you primary boot it can bypass this, but it has problems with AP games (doesn't seem to affect everyone oddly) Maybe this is because they are not 1:1 clones of r4i-sdhc.com, the cards they are based on.

Official Wood support does not mean much now that it's no longer updated. The card I linked has no firmware expiration, and it runs wood 1.62. Only difference I've found between it and the original is no RTS.

Edit: I should have said before but think you should consider DSTT too, haven't heard of any problems with it.

Alright, thanks for the input! I really appreciate it. I guess I have one more card to consider now.:)
(I guess the ".cn" in "r4isdhc.com.cn" got me too suspicious to even consider the card)

I'm still interested in hearing if people got any experience with the two other cards using this kernel. You said "consider DSTT" - do you think the cndstt.com is close enough to the original/clones to work? I was mainly leaning towards the r4 because it costs more than the dstt in some other stores. But I know it doesn't really mean much.

Thanks!

edit: I created a new thread for this, to avoid cluttering this thread. But input on support for the dstt vs r4-sdhc would be appreciated.

Anyone know what program is used for the usrcheat.dat? I tried using the R4 cheat editor, but it crashes, cause the file is too big. Want to edit a cheat to revert a fail from my part. I can't seem to use desmume or no$gba for it.

The only one that I tried was R4CCE. Try running it in compatibility mode

I have an error with 999 with the spanish translation, the original game works flawless and you have the option to use cheats, with the translation not leave the choice of cheats and seems is not detect like the original.

DSTT www.ndstt.com
TITLE: 999HRPERDOO SERIAL: NTR-BSKE-USA CRC32:72D4A605

The game freezes when open some doors.

Thanks, I'm looking for a way to read the game as the original.

Turn off DMA/Reset in the YSmenu. That fixed it for me. Golden sun is the only game that stats broken on a r4i sdhc...
Nope, doesn't work for me. DMA/Reset have been off for me the entire time and saving is still broken. Sometimes it works but eventually it inevitably freezes. Doesn't work with DMA/Reset on either.

Hi there, I just bought a Nintendo ds lite with r4i3d, I know it's not a very good flashcart but I managed to run retro's ysmenu on it but it keeps saying "unsupported dldi name" error when starting a game. Is there a solution for this?
The flashcart is r4i3d 2012.

Can you show pictures of the cart?

Hi all, I'm new here.

I just registered to say thanks to @SugarSnack (for the skin, it's awesome, thank you so much!) and @retrogamefan , but I have some problems with the kernel, my flashcart is a R4isdhc.com the "2016 version" and I'm using the last update released by you (including the DAT), all games that I have are working perfectly except for Pokémon White/Black and White/Black 2, on White/Black the game starts fine then slows down to a point that the game freezes (it happens always when the Professor asks my name) I read that it happens to other users here. (It's not a problem of the SD card, confirmed)

Also, I have some questions, these cart clones have a programmed obsolescence right? with your kernel this doesn't happen? I mean, I can play all that I want without worrying about buying another R4?

Thanks! you're awesome.

When you boot YSMenu directly (by using a patched r4.dat) then yes, it bypasses the date check that would otherwise disable the card.
