So after looking through page after page, I've found that a possible error for one of my boards (I have four of them and not a single one will work :glare: ) is a defective crystal. The problem is that I know very little about proper electrical components, and am unsure whether I can replace the crystal that's on the board right now with one of these.
Can anyone tell me if this will work or not? Thanks in advance.

I haven't got "my" Neo Geo MVS board here (it's not really mine, it's a friend's, but I've consolized it) so I can't check the oscillator. If it's the same form factor, as long as you get the correct frequency (internet says 32.768kHz, but it should be written on it) it'll work.

Thanks for the quick response. The thing is that I'm not sure, the old crystal looks different (and says 24.000) but the legs of the crystal in my earlier picture will fit (I have some 20.000 crystals lying around, and those would fit too). Here's the original crystal:
(I apologize for the terrible quality, but my phone was the only camera available at the moment).
In all honesty, I would repair one of my other boards, but one has physical damage, one has faulty backup RAM, and one works fine, except for the fact that it won't recognize any cartridge. So this seemed the easiest option.

If you have four boards just steal the crystal from the one which is not reading the cartridge? :P

Anyway yes, they're compatible they're just a different package :)

All right, thank you very much. And honestly? Because I'm secretly still hoping that I can repair them all at some point (so that I can have one 'normal' board, one consolized, and the other boards are different types). But for now, I'd like to be able to play Spin Master on the original board.
edit: And another quick question, does it matter what way the crystal is put in there? (Ie is it like a battery with poles or not?)

Well, you can always get a new one later ;) Nope, it does not matter, so you can just solder whichever way you want.

Once more, thank you very much. Yeah I could, but I just ordered them (70 cents for 10) so they should be here relatively soon (I'll just play my Sega ST-V board in the mean time :P ).

Sorry if this seems off topic but whats the point of turning an MVS board into a console instead of just getting an AES?

Isnt the whole point of an AES to have the arcade experience at your home? no need to break down a unit

Price is the major factor MVS boards and games go for far less money.

ok, I figured there was some unknown benefit I wasnt aware about like better quality video/sound output or something like that.

I would save up for an AES and just get a cartridge converter to play MVS carts on an AES. I'm still holding hope that an Everdrive will be made in the near future, Krikzz has no interest in making one unfortunately.

You get better compatibility with just using a consolized MVS and should be cheaper so is a better alternative.

In all honesty I wanted to get the AES (+unibios) at first, but then I came across an ebay offer for 4 MVS boards (some of which would work and others wouldn't) three JAMMA boards with unknown games, and world heroes (MVS version) for 25 bucks. So I figured, why not? Unfortunately, by the time I bought a supergun six months had passed ( I wanted to consolize a board first, but my soldering iron broke down and it took me a while to get a new one), so I couldn't exactly complain anymore.

I dont understand what you mean by better compatibility?

Its just a different pin layout for MVS and AES, how would using a cartridge converter play any differently?

MVS -> AES converters are not just a direct pin pass through hence why they cost many hundreds of dollars.
Also some are known to have compatibility issues.

A quick update, replacing the crystal did absolutely nothing. I'm not sure what the issue can be at this point, but I haven't completely given up yet.
