Does anyone know of any rumors (or confirmations) for a new Zelda game for the 3ds? It seems odd to me that the new Zeldas on the 3DS are all 2D (not talking about remakes and crossovers).

link between worlds is a 3D game... all graphics are 3D, the character moves in 3D space...
It arguably plays like a 2D with everything except for the wall-merging.

Of those five, one sucked, one wasn't really a Zelda game, and two were remakes.
Honestly, though, I'm thrilled to have the remakes. Triforce Heroes and Hyrule Warriors Legends I can take or leave.
I agree 100%.

I would honestly love another Zelda game in the style of Link's Awakening or the Oracle games (wouldn't necessarily have to be pixel-style), but I know that's never going to happen.

I'd be happy with a game with the LBW engine, except with the overworld not lifted from a previous game.

It's possible, but I suspect unlikely. We'd have probably heard at least rumors or hints at this point if any serious effort were being made.

ALBW is what's generally considered a 2.5D game. 3D graphics but plays more or less like a 2D game.

Handhelds have never had full 3D Zelda games, those have always been on the home consoles, so I don't find it odd at all.

You should be happy. There is at least one good Zelda game that wasn't a remake, and we never had to cry over something like a Legend of Zelda Federation Force.
There are other franchises that need more love.

I am sure that Nintendo has a plans for the next portable video game and a new zelda game.
Oh, I'm sure they do too. I'm talking about on the 3DS though.

I thought it was pure 2D, I read that it's a sequel to A link to the Past.

Handhelds have never had full 3D Zelda games, those have always been on the home consoles, so I don't find it odd at all.
Apart from the 3DS, Nintendo handhelds have never been capable of rendering a Zelda game in 3D.

The DS was. Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks are rendered in 3D. It just seems like top-down suits handhelds better.
They were only 2.5D. They had basic models (islands, ocean, link...) rendered in 3D to a framebuffer, with sprites rendered over that.

And the land when docked/parked was also 2D sprites made to look 3D

I know and they already made two remastered and 2 new games. They are not going to make a new one. That's why I am saying that they are going to make a new one for the next brand new portable system.

One of the leaked documents from new 3ds rumors said they'd remake wind waker and twilight princess for the new 3DS, but I figure we'd have heard something by now if it were true.

and to be honest, i still do not like any of the "3D" Zelda games, i just forced myself through OoT and abandoned MM after about two three-day-cycles. For me, zelda has to be top-down, that's when i like them. if that means i will be forced to hanheld zeldas, so be it. Nothing beats ALbW, Links awakening, ALttP, OoS/OoA and even minish cap and phantom hourglass (Still have to play Spirit Tracks).

Are you sure? It looked like 3D to me
I didn't play them much though.

I'm the opposite, in fact the only top-down Zelda games I've beaten are Minish Cap (which was great) and Triforce Heroes. They just fail to get me hooked.

OoT was the first zelda game I played, and Windwaker the second, so to me, 2D Zelda just seems odd.
Phantom Hourglass was the first 2D I played to completion (and to this day, it and Spirit Tracks are the only ones I've managed to beat, the ST's microphone use almost made it unfinish-able.)
I agree that minish cap was one of or the best.

EDIT: I also almost beat minish cap, but couldn't get through dark hyrule castle. And I almost finished wind waker, ocarina, and twilight, but lost my saves
