I've been out of the loop for a long time and just want to hack an old 3DS for my young daughter to use, and want it t be kid proof, meaning she can't update it and or brick it w/o doing something with the SD card.

I'm not sure where to be started or what to install, as there seem to be tons of options. I mostly just want to be able to install 3DS and DS games for her to play that we own instead of using the cards that she will lose.

I do have Cubic Ninja, as well as Ocarina of Time 3DS.

On NA O3DS on firmware 8.1.0-19u.
Use Plailect's Guide and update to 9.2.
Link: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/9.2.0-Update

Then follow the rest of the guide. Also no matter what, at this current moment, you will need a DS Flashcart to play DS Backups. Only DSi games can be played on the 3DS via .cia.

I post it in other thread but I think this thread is more active. :)

Hi,
I succeed installing CFW with the help from this tutorial. Thanks Plailect.
But I still have some queries.
Before I do anything stupid, I think it is best to ask in this forum.

These are some of my question.
1. Can I just login with my NNID now?
2. Am I still able to do transaction from eshop?
3. Can I still play from my original cartridges?
3. If I change the region later, what is the answer for question #1, #2 and #3?
4. With the current condition (before changing the region), I read in FAQs that I am able to play online eventhough I haven't tried it. How about after changing region, can I still play online?
5. If something bad happen, how can I go back to OFW v9.2?

I will follow the additional step from Plailect's Tutorial regarding the region changing.

edit:
I think I forgot my NNID and I have to make a new one, can I just make a new NNID?

Hi,
I have just finished installing CFW via Cubic Ninja for the entry gate.
After going through the tutorial, I am aware that I can press some combinations of buttons to enter some "hidden" menu on 3DS. I can do it when the 3DS is turned off.
Yes it is not that obvious but kids can accidentally push those buttons.
I hope this gives you the gist.

1. Yeah, you can just login into your NNID as normal, if you forgot that info, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to make a new one.
2. Yeah, I've bought stuff of the eshop just fine on my A9LH systems.
3. Yes, you can still play all your original cartridge games, with the added benefit of being able to play out-of-region ones too!
4. If on o3DS, you will have to delete your eshop and unlink your NNID, in other words giving up any rights to your previous purchases. Then you'll be able to region change and still have access to the other region's eshop, be able to setup NNID and be able to make purchases of the eshop. Your original cartridges will probably be now out-of-region cartridges for the region you changed to, but will still work. For N3DS, you will lose access to the eshop, and not be able to use an NNID, however, your original cartridges should still work.
5. Like what? A9LH is there so if you soft-brick you just restore a previous backup via Hourglass9. As for if you must go to a clean OFW 9.2, you'll have to setup the Decryp9.bin payload and flashback a clean non-A9LH 9.2 sysNAND backup. (Which you should have if you kept every backup in the guide.)

Also, those hidden menus are payloads, and you have to launch them at boot time. In other words, while it's off but turning on. If this is a problem, you'll have to setup something like arm9loaderhay, which was created for this, I think.

I found a 10.5.0.30 2ds for an okay price, would I be able to use homebrew on that and downgrade it with either freakyforms or no game?

Load up EmuNAND9, if you setup your 3DS as instructed by Plailect's A9LH guide, then holding Y at boot time will open it.

Now, press the Select button to safely unmount your SD card. Insert the SD Card with your rxTools EmuNAND. Press B to go back to the menu. Go to EmuNAND Manager Options -> Backup EmuNAND to file. Let it backup the EmuNAND. Once done Poweroff the console. Remove the SD card you just inserted and put in the other one. Now, again if you setup your 3DS as instructed, then hold Start at boot time to open Hourglass9. Press select to unmount the SD Card, and re-insert the SD Card with your emuNAND (which should also now have an emunand backup.bin on it) - Press B. Go to SysNAND Backup/Restore Options -> SysNAND Restore and use the EmuNAND.bin backup you have on the SD Card. Once done
Poweroff your system, and on your computer transfer the Nintendo 3DS folder from the EmuNAND SD Card to the other SD Card.

You'll probably need to change up the procedure if you want to keep the EmuNAND SD Card as your main. If that's the case, you'll have to backup it's contents to your PC, and also do an EmuNAND9 "Format SD (no EmuNAND)" at the end, and copy the relevant files onto it once done.

Hey! I just wanted to say thank you for posting this! I modified the procedure slightly because I wanted to continue using the original EmuNAND card, but otherwise, the procedure worked fine! I had to combine basically the exploits on the new SD card with my games from the old SD card, and that along with flashing my old EmuNAND to SysNAND worked! Thanks again!

One final question: With that guide set up, I should be okay to update to version 11.0.0 on SysNAND, since I'm using arm9loaderhax and Luma3DS, is that correct?

Yup, that is correct. Luma3DS offers FIRM protection, so updating with it is safe. As always, also make sure to be on the latest version of Luma3DS.

Also, off-topic, but there goes my 666 post count. ;_;

Now, another question, I think this is the last :P: I know with 11.0.0 downgrading is blocked. Does that still apply even if this is done under Luma3DS? Like say, if I upgrade to 11.0.0 and somehow I screw it up doing something else, can I still use my 10.7 NAND Backup?

Do you mean you update your Emunand to 11.0 or your sysnand to 11.0? If you update your sysnand to 11.0 and you don't have A9LH, then you're screwed and you'd need a hardmod to downgrade again. Emunand can be updated fine to 11.0. If you update your sysnand to 11.0 and do have A9LH then you're fine.

Well updating with Luma3DS, nothing should screw up. Anyways, if something does happen, you'd just run Hourglass9 at boot time, by holding Start, and flash back your 10.7 NAND backup.

Edit: Like Temarille has said, all the info I've posted is pertaining to A9LH setups only. I am pretty sure computerlife22 has A9LH setup from the info they've provided.

I mean updating SysNAND with A9LH. I've got A9LH now, without a doubt I'm gonna stick with it! :D I'm gonna do the update now, I'll post here again if I run into trouble. Thanks again!

I recently installed a9lh to my friends 3ds using the recent plailect guide. I was iffy at first to update mine since i was fine with emunand and rei, but i see that we can now save space on the sd card by installing the hacked nand to the 3ds directly.

How would I go about updating my 3ds to the current standards? I imagine i would need to start by having a rednand no? And then going from there, skipping the otp part since I already have it?

the OTP is unique to every console. don't use an otp.bin that was dumped from another console or it will brick yours.

you might be able to start here: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Part-4-(2.1.0-Downgrade)
if you already have an emunand, you can use "EmuNAND" in place of "RedNAND".

The opt im using is the one i got for my console months ago, dont worry i know that well.

Alright, ill give it a go then, thanks

The updated method doesn't need the OTP.bin anymore. As I belive it reads it out of 2.1 and then installs A9LH straight from 2.1.

Edit: Of course, once should still back up their OTP.bin as instructed by the guide.

if they already have the otp.bin for their console they don't need to (and shouldn't) go to 2.1 again to install arm9loaderhax when they can do it just fine on 9.2.

So, I have a problem that has me stumped. I'm helping a friend and followed the Plailect guide to the dot. On Part 5 "Section VI - Finalizing setup" Step 8 - Open Health and Safety (which is now FBI). Health and Safety is just Health and Safety. I instructed him to go into Decrypt9 and inject the FBI_inject_with_banner.app again, but the bottom screen flashes red and boots him back into the Homebrew Launcher. All of the button commands work, so he can boot into the Luma3DS config menu, Hourglass9, and EmuNAND9. Much appreciated for the help.

I'm planning to install Luma3ds, unfortunately I have the latest 3DS update (11.0.0). Any chance I could still install it?

I'm trying to do browserhax but always get this error. What am I doing wrong? (already changed the date and time ) my system is on 10.3.0-22E

When I launch homebrew channel from the home menu (I am A9LH + LUMA + 11.0.33) it launches fine, by when I try to load a program (for example Emunand9) it just crashes back to home menu. Is this usual behavior or do I have it set up wrong?
