My cousin's "Luigi of the year something" Old3DS is still on 6.1.0, which CFW would you suggest going for? The only feature of interest would be playing game backups since he's 10 years old, anything else is just a bonus. Thanks.

A CFW would require emuNAND, which could be a little complicated for my little cousin. a9lh works completely on sysNAND right? So basically it wouldn't change anything of which he's used to. I think it would be the easiest option for him to use.

Best going with a9lh/luma cfw, as if he messes around with it and it ever went pear shaped, least you have decrypt9 to restore a backup nand on boot.

emunand without a9lh is actually even easier and has 0% chance of bricking
I would say a9lh has like a 5% chance of bricking even if you follow the instructions correctly (saying that from my personal experience)

with A9LH you can boot your system into updated CFW without any problems, your cousin could technically update when a nag comes (which shouldn't with Luma for example). It looks just like a normal system, usually with a bit more titles though. I'd recommend you to change the place FBI will be if you decide to keep it, as it can do some bad stuff to his 3ds.

go for a9lh+luma3ds which is the best way of hacking your 3ds.
it runs the hacks on boot and allows you to run any ds flashcard, and run games(gba, retro and 3ds) as cias(on the home menu)
1st. Follow the 9.2.0 Update section to update to 9.2
2nd. Follow with the rest of the guide, very carefully . Take your time and don't be blind and skip steps ;)
Good Luck!

I don't think the guys cousin would appreciate if he recieved a fancy looking paperweight instead of his normal 3ds
use menuhax instead, 100% safe, if you try installing a9lh even the slightest little detail like a bad sd card can fuck things up

please, nowadays if one follows plailect's guide carefully it's just impossible to brick a 3ds, unless you skip steps.
And menuhax is trash compared to a9lh considering that the risk of installing a9lh is comparable to the risk of installing a9lh is one is careful enough. The difference is the install time, but it pays off in the short and long term for convenience, faster boot rates and not having to double install gba and dsi cias, as well as brick protection, and invunerability to nintendo updates

mate, this is op's little cousin we're talking about. 14 seconds of less boot time just isn't worth the extra pressure and time. He just wants to play free games. That's it. Menuhax is better in a situation like this.

menuhax is an ages old hack and considering it's kids we're talking about it's easier to break menuhax than to break a9lh(I would like to see a kid breaking that).
Also, it's not just shaving boot tie, but also boot rates as menuhax boot rates are unberable.
Also, if his little cousin decides to go to sysnand and update it(just press the trigger by accident), OP will be done with his 3ds ...
So, it's not only safer, and the pressure isn't really that high compared to the end reward. And yes, menuhax would be better in a situation like this one year ago
