Basically I have a fat ps2 although it's my dad's and what my goal is to run games off an hdd. My dad wouldn't mind me softmodding although he would be extremely mad if I were to brick it or cause damage although I am very confident I can do it I just want to be safe. So can someone link me too the simplest and especially CHEAPEST guide. Also how can I check the ps2 firmware version or whatever they Call it for the ps2 to make sure I can softmod it although I'm sure it's old

All fat consoles can be softmodded. Only 9000 series slims with a datecode of 8c or above can't. You have a fat model, so it's all good.

Unfortunetly ps2 guides seem to be scattered all over the place.

The easiest method, would just be to get a memory card with freemcb already installed on it for you. From there you can easily make more if you need them (for spares etc). They are easy to make for anyone who can run ps2 homebrew already, so there should still be plenty of people offering the service or just ask in the trading section if someone will do it for you. If you know anyone who has a modded ps2, then you could easily create the card there as well.

Other option, is disc swap method with a game that can do it, this guide pretty much cover that for fat consoles.

http://mirrors.nkorth.com/fmcb/ps2fatfmcbguide.html

I think certain versions of AR max can do it as well, but iirc only certain versions and I couldn't find a guide with that info.

you will need:
1 - 8MB ps2 memory card
1 - MGS snake eater (or any other exploit game I used this game and had a Success for 2 systems)
1 - blank DVD-r disk
1 - pc capable of burning DVD IMG's I used (alcohol 120%)
and last is the files for snake Eater
(the exploit files)

buy a copy of MGS3 snake eater or if you have a copy great. must be original I think. I don't know if there is a greatest hits or not but if there is get the original release.

then you search Google and find some files for the PS2 and freemcboot that are for a couple games MGS III being one of them.
search something like MGS 3 Freemcboot.

once you have the files. use your pc to make a backup of MGS3 and then you rebuild the IMG but with the exploit files.

then take apart the ps2 to where you are able to do a swap trick. model# depends on how the system will look internally some make swapping easy others not so much. but it can be done. (I opened mine up 8 screws or 9 I think then I took the top cover off the ps2 then I took the screws off the dvd drive so I could take a disc out while it was spinning and replace with another "swap trick")

once you are ready to swap insert your memory card into the ps2 first slot. run the original copy of MGS3 snake eater. go to the menu and do the swap trick with your copy you made. go to download content I think ( it's been awhile) and then it should start to load Freemcboot menu and give you options to install to the memory card.

once installed to the memory card you no longer need MGS3 unless you accidently wipe the memory card. this would delete the softmod. in that case redo the mod again.

you can find guides online this all came from my memory it's been awhile so I may not be 100% correct.

Could I find one of those memory cards on Amazon or should I ask here and use PayPal?

Hey everyone, I'm in the same boat as Mr. VinAnator here. I'm trying to get free mcboot and I've found many conflicting answers as to what to do. Some say I need a swapmagic and some say I need nothing at all and just a blank disc. What's the A9LH of PS2 and how do I install and use it? Thanks everyone.

Both claims are false. Get an exploitable PS2 game. The most popular is James bond agent under fire. Then burn a modified file onto a blank disc and swap the games at a certain time in the game . There are guides on YouTube. FreeMcBoot is basically A9LH because there's no hacks beyond that.

You would do better by getting a network adapter+compatible IDE HDD and an enclosure to run games from HDD.

I also read that, in theory, any game can be exploited like that as long as there's 3 elf files or something like that. You replace one and play through the game until that part starts up. When that part of the game loads, the launcher loads too.

I softmoded my PS2 years ago, and never heard of anything like that. There may have been advances throughout the years. Most of the tutorials I used and list of games I found back then are now gone. I will do more research and get back at you.

I seems like you can do it I theory, but you'll have to try out multiple games and you need a psx disc. Most games with online mode will most likely work. Most of the links are dead though. If toy can still find the noobie package for FreeMcBoot and an explotqble game your good to go. Although I recommend getting Agent Under Fire as it is the most easiest and well know to launch the elf ffile.

Agent Under Fire is only $6 on ebay anyway. It might be best to grab that and not waste time going through lots of games one by one.

You only need a network adapter and a hard drive and a way to connect it to PC.

Well that sure is an easier method....

I remember this as well. the game just needs a bunch of elf files and the files should be named something that references an in-game menu/selection so that you know how to activate it and which .elf to replace with the exploit one ( quite like MGS3 replaces the comfouflage download. "netdown.elf" or something similiar) so now when launching netdown.elf it launches the exploit instead. (netdown.elf =camouflage download) I'd just use known games there are 3 if I remember correctly I know of the 2 but the last one I forgot.

In Jak 2 there's a movie.elf file. I don't know what it could be for. I can't find it mentioned anywhere except 2 places who both just glossed over Jak 2 and moved on to other games. 1 person speculates that movie.elf handles fmvs. I had to look those up. Those are cutscenes apparently so triggering any cutscene in Jak 2 would make ulaunch load.

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.

Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though

@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.

Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.
