Hacking Been awhile...any advice?

Hey guys, I currently have an N3DS that I haven't turned on since like...the announcement that 10.1(2?) was the last hackable firmware, so I'm sitting at homemenuhax w/ RxTools 9.5 EmuNand right now(RX-E 9.5.0-28U), and I haven't kept up with ANYTHING lately.

I have a crap ton of CIAs installed in emunand and..that's about it really. I'm sorry for not doing the research but where I am right now, I don't even know where to start researching. I see at the top of this page that "All CFWs can be updated to 10.7 without problems.", and I can see the update nag right now but I'm definitely not going to do that without consulting you guys first.

So...what do?

Update your CFW to either the newest version of rxTools or preferably Luma3DS, and update your emuNAND from System Settings (NOT ANYWHERE ELSE)

You could also install Arm9LoaderHax, allowing 10.7 sysNAND CFW.

you are safe to update your emunand.

i would recommend switching from rxtools to arm9loaderhax. Have a read at this: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki and decide what you should do

Luma3DS seems nice, I mean I probably won't use any of its features other than installing CIAs, but it's popular so I guess I'll go with it. So, I just copy the files over that I'd use with menuhax, run it from the launcher, and go into EmuNAND settings and update normally? (I'm leaving out of town in like 6 hours and I really don't want to brick a system right before lol) Btw, all my CIAs and themes and what not will still be there after switching emunands and updating, right?

Don't feel like you have to switch to A9LH, as MenuHax CFW are still a viable option that allow for keeping an updated EmuNAND.

That said, the benefits are worth the time spent researching and installing A9LH. It's just a process that tales hours to complete, instead of minutes. If you choose to do it, make sure that you have set aside time to do so. Don't rush through any of the steps. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

In that case I'll definitely just go with a CFW then, since I don't have much time...Can you answer my above question? And one last question: How do I go about switching SD cards and maintaining everything I've done? I bought a 128GB mSD card, and the one I'm using now is 64GB. Would I just simply use some software to clone both drives, or?

Nope. You need to extract your emuNAND using a tool and then inject it into your new sd card once you've transferred the files over. Second, the whole process of going from your current setup to AL9H might take you an entire day, depending on how well you follow the guide. It is worth doing, but the benefits do not greatly outweigh the costs. It is definitely the superior method, but emuNAND and rxTools can also do many of the same things. The only thing that is better is a shorter boot time, custom boot animations, and a guarantee hack unpatchable by Nintendo and unbrickable by updates.

So, Dump EmuNAND to EmuNAND.bin, copy all files from old SD card to new SD card, then format EmuNAND, then Clone EmuNAND.bin to EmuNAND? (I have EmuNANDTool9)

Steps using emunand tool:
1. Remove old sd card for the 3ds
2. Insert new SD into 3ds
3. Format emunand on the new SD
4. remove the new SD from the 3ds

Now, the rest of these steps take place on your PC

5. insert Old SD
6. Copy contents to a folder
7. open emunand tool and backup emunand
8. remove old SD and insert the new one
9. copy contents of that folder to the new SD
10. inject the emunand we extracted earlier (using emunand tool)

This is how I did mine last year. It's very possible that this guide is outdated.

Install A9LH+Luma3DS . It might take a while but it's worth it

now if you research it well beforehand and follow the guide step by step it should take about 4-5 hours to complete, but once you're done and have a9lhax with luma3ds (whether you boot to updates sysnand or emunand) it just feels so much better to know you have a futuresafe setup and (close to) nothing to worry about.

I was hesitant of switching to a9lh but honestly the difference is night and day since you can cold boot directly to emunand or hacked sysnand 100% of the time very quickly without any crazy colors or crashing or button holding and unlike other hacks its border line unpatchable so it's very unlikely Nintendo will be able to release an update that breaks it since it's such a low level hack.

The difference is not night and day my friend. I went from fully updated EmuNAND booting from rxTools via autoboot. If you have time, its worth the effort. If not, then emuNAND + rxTools is perfectly fine.

And then there are some cases, like me, on my JPN o3DS system, I had like a 15-25% bootrate with menuhax. So many yellow screens on that... Didn't even think it was possible... literally would have had to leave it in sleep mode all the time if I had settled on menuhax+rednand on that.

Okay a quick recap for you since you've just been out of the loop:

Arm9LoaderHax
The biggest new thing in the scene right now is A9LH, which is an exploit you install over the course of about 2 or 3 hours. The exploit itself runs before the 3DS boots into the home menu at all, allowing you to boot into CFW basically the moment the 3DS powers on. It's cumbersome and slightly annoying to set up, but Plailect's Guide has the most efficient route to doing so. (I've gone through it 5 times on 5 3DS systems, and it simply doesn't get any better than that)

With it you can safely stop using EmuNAND entirely and use your SysNAND for everything which negates the need for dual installing DSiware and GBA titles, and is all around a lot easier to manage. (And don't worry, the guide covers moving your EmuNAND to your SysNAND so you will get to keep your installed CIAs, no worries there)

RxTools is Deprecated
So one of the things lost in translation is RxTools. Because A9LH is made to be quick and efficient, other CFW's like Luma3DS (which itself is just an awesome fork/rewrite of ReiNAND) have taken over because- simply put, they do exactly what they need to do and do it efficiently instead of being filled with feature creep like RxTools was. Since Luma3DS is also a a9lh BootLoader, it allows you to boot into other tools to do all the functions that you could do with RxTools and more, actually.

Luma3DS (formerly known as AuReiNAND) is, as I said above, a fork of ReiNAND- which added support for o3DS, A9LH, and has blossomed into a much more effective CFW then what which is was forked from in a variety of ways. For one thing, the CFW has full update protection, as in, you can update the 3DS all you want and A9LH won't go anywhere, even if nintendo made an update to Firm0 or Firm1. In addition it has built in Region Free, n3DS Clock Speed Changing, Language Emulation, and it also doubles as a A9LH bootloader, allowing you boot into other A9LH payloads by holding the corresponding button while powering on.


To conclude, you should switch to Luma3DS no matter what you do, as RxTools is no longer being actively developed.
Once you have time, you should ditch your MenuHax for Arm9LoaderHax and use it to boot into CFW instead, by following Plailect's Guide.
