This requires installing CIAs to your sysNAND

Do you miss the bygone days of a simple short-ranged communications system? Do you wish you could draw things in rainbows and send it to anyone nearby? Well, then this guide may just be for you.

Needed:
  1. A way to install CIAs on sysNAND. (I used FBI injected into Health & Safety.)
  2. A CIA of pictochat.
  3. {Possibly?) A patched TWL_FRIM. (Guide here.)
  4. A way to launch installed titles. PictoChat will not show up on your home menu. I used FBI.
Steps:
  1. Patch your TWL_FIRM using the aforementioned guide.
  2. Make sure FBI/BBM/etc. is installing to your NAND, not your SD card (In FBI press L once to switch to installing on NAND) and install the CIA.
  3. Launch the title via whatever method you wish. In FBI, press R 3 times and scroll all the way down to "PctChat" and launch it.

Viola. Pictochat on a 3DS. Not much of a guide but hey, I think it's neat. And yes, it still communicates with DS and DSi systems. http://imgur.com/awdYE4G

Works great, is there a way to launch it directly from the Home Menu?
Sure! Open the .nds file in a hex editor, and change "05" at 0x234 to "04", use make_cia to turn it into cia, then install it to your 3DS.
Alternatively, you can use @Apache Thunder's forwarder CIA (which installs to SD), and it boots the installed Pictochat from the system.

EDIT: Cubic Ninja'd.

Apache Thunder posted a link to a pictochat launcher in a post on his old 3ds DSiWare hacking progress thread. You'd need to go through a Lot of his posts to find it.

Edit: you were already told this. Nevermind

For PictoChat that won't be enough. You need to change the rest of the TID to match a game code that already exists in the DS Cart White list (this requires changing the game code in the main header too, so you'll need to fix the CRC afterwords).

The current TID/Game code it uses will be rejected by home menu and cause an error has occurred message if you attempt to launch it. (though it will still work if launched from DevMenu)

Is there a (easy) way to see the App Icon on the Home Menu and launch it from there (perhaps with a video? My english is middle...)

Im confused, i have it showing opn my home screen but not my brothers. DOes anyone know of a patched one that works? Or how to find apache thunders forwarder, because all I see is the ds game forwarders which is not what i have

you need to install the cia file with the injected fbi from hourglass9 then go to titles (on fbi) all the way down to the regular ds games and theres pictochat after that you can install the pictochat launcher from apachethunder

sorry if I ask it here. How can my friend join the channel when he is at home?
Nope. Not without being able to create a virtual Ad-hoc network specific to the NDS. Unfortunately, it uses a Nintendo proprietary protocol (dubbed "NiFi"), and because of this something like Xlink Kai was never made to be compatible with it. So you're going to have to wait for someone else to figure it out. Unless of course something like this already exists that I'm totally unaware of.
