So I got a9lh setup on one 3ds with updated sysnand, it's cool and all that but, I haven't been able to find the original guide where you keep emunand as they new guide is all about updated sysnand. I understand its safe and all that jazz, but I've got an emotional connection to my emunand and it feels like I'm betraying a close friend by turning him into a sysnand (this idiotic comment is just me trying to avoid the undoubted stream of emunand naysayers). What is the process to get a9lh to boot into emunand instead of 'updated sysnand'?

Remove the file that says "updatedsysnand" from the rei folder.

Clone SysNAND to EmuNAND then remove the updatedsysand file

I assume I can't do the "exploiting arm9" dealio in part 5 of the guide directly on emunand thus leaving my sysnand alone?

You won't get rid of emunand. It's just installing a9lh. It's like installing menuhax. You're not getting rid of emunand when you install it, but you're allowing an easier way to get to emunand.

Well, it's not really like menuhax.

Menuhax installs theme data to the SD card. This is impossible to brick anything with.

arm9loaderhax installs to two partitions on the NAND itself; the partitions responsible for booting the 3ds. If you do this wrong it will 100% brick.

I'm knowledgeable on what a9lh is and what it can be used for. All I was doing was giving an analogy of what installing a9lh is somewhat equivalent to. I was not giving an analogy of a9lh having the same features as menuhax and I certainly wasn't comparing how a9lh and menuhax are installed as, like you said, they are very different.

Although that's fair, I don't believe that we should make too many comparisons between a9lh and menuhax. People who are familiar with menuhax may think that a9lh has a relatively low chance of brick, but if you do even one thing wrong the chance of bricking your console is high.

That's true, but even a newcomer usually like 9/10 times, know the consequences. In almost every tutorial about cfw and the like, there are warnings such as: "I am not responsible if your system explodes blah blah...". And it's like, if you have menuhax, then that either means you're already on cfw or you're gonna downgrade otherwise why are you here really? Not many people just stick with homebrew now. Meaning even before they get a9lh, they should already have an understanding of bricks and that while menuhax is safe, downgrading and a9lh's process most certainly isn't. And if you do brick, this may sound harsh, but if you do brick and it's because of your own stupidity, then it's your fault. I'm not saying that everyone who bricks is stupid, because I understand if it wasn't user error then it isn't your fault, but if you actually do compare the OTP process to installing menuhax and take the time to downgrade leisurely like it's no big deal and you do brick, then you really have no one to cry to but yourself.

Yeah, to be honest I was hoping to keep my sysnand clean and still reap the majority of the a9lh benefits, but I see that ain't gonna happen. I'll probably just stick with the 'updated sysnand'. Thanks everyone for the guidance.

Worst come to worst, you manage to brick your SysNAND. A9LH will let you boot decrypt9 and restore a backup. :)

I think I asked this somewhere else too, but does that mean a hardbrick is straight up impossible with a9lh?
Mostly. Unless you do something REALLY REALLY BAD and mess up your FIRM0/1 partitions, you're good to go. Shouldn't even be possible once it's booted thanks to AuReiNAND protecting FIRM0/1

I went with sysnand only A9LH, it's completely fine. I've never bricked a 3DS since my GBAtemp join date, it's very difficult to brick unless you remove a system title with FBI or something. If you ever installed AGB firm, FBI kindly removes it for you before installing the custom one, so there's no risk with that anymore.

TRUST in Plailect's guide, it has you end up with sysnand only because plailect himself recommends it. I can't imagine this EVER backfiring.

Correct me if im wrong but doesnt arm9lh+updated sysnand mean we can finally use the 3ds system to run cfw directly instead of emulating a system patched with CFW? If so then it is great for the community that we've evolved to this step and that with time we wouldnt need emunand

Indeed that is what it does. No need to worry about sys nand being corrupt either as its possible to fix it by booting into the recovery programs on the SD card before it loads the main system.

As long as firm area is not corrupted/changed when running specific tools then its fine (and aureinand protects these when in the system anyhow)

It is a giant step forward however some people would still like the safeguard in case they break something. Plus the boot is only about a second faster for me.
