So, 3DS is dead, blah blah blah.
Friend buying me a new one cause hes adorable and super nice.
But-
Should I try downgrading it if its below 10.3?

Like, I don't wanna brick a gift, but that's kinda the reason i want a new 3ds in the first place, is to install the stuff onto it.
He has no idea I'm into this type of stuff. He'll get it with a warranty, but I don't wanna be the guy that receives a gift and breaks it an hour later.

So, should I chance it? I mean, I may only get softbricked, I dunno. (This is an XL btw)

PS: I bet you thought you saw the last of me. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

If you follow the instructions correctly and sysUpdater (or whatever is used nowadays for downgrading) starts up properly, then there should be no problem with the procedure. Best of luck, whatever your choice! :)

Oof it sounds like one of those morally right or wrong choices. If they know about what you're planning to do, I think they'll understand better than if you get it, brick it and SURPRISE! You drop the bomb on them.

The downgrading process has gotten safer and I don't think there's a super high brick chance, but there still is one. I don't want to tell you to downgrade it or not since it's kinda hard to decide for people in this situation, but it does have a lot of perks and it is a good idea.

You can downgrade all 3ds's right now. Even the latest 10.7 is vulnerable. Just go for it.
Wait, what? Up to that version? What has Nintendo been doing? o.O
Well, what if the process goes wrong at some point and I have to reset my 3DS? Any advice on how not to run into any/minimal issues?

Ok to kinda get rid of some fears (and add some to boot!) you have a chance of bricking obviously. but to throw some personal experiences for a sec, ive spent the last week doing nothing but downgrading friend's 3DS's. Id say about five to six cause i know somewhat of my stuff (still learning ayyy lmao) and ive done it 6 times in a row on my first try. Each. If you need help on the matter look it up for an updated sysUpdater and look to this guide if you do eventually downgrade and want to setup an emunand, which i recommend highly.
EDIT: All of these were on 10.6 and one 10.7. Ayyy.

Basically, memchunkhax2 was revived because someone figured out that the GPU can be used to exploit the race condition. You can't run browserhax or menuhax on 10.6-10.7 though, so for those firmwares you'd need a game entrypoint such as oothax, smashbroshax, or cubic ninja.

Read all instructions fully before starting any process (rather than reading as you go along), make sure you have the correct firmware packages (i.e. Don't use an O3DS package on your N3DS), and take regular backups of your sysNAND (make sure there's enough space on the mSD card as each .bin takes up 1.8GB).

Oh, and make sure the console has plenty of power. It's best to leave it plugged in during the entire process. Don't close the lid at any point unless the unit has been completely powered off.

During any stages where NAND is being dumped or restored, keep the back cover on. It's tempting to leave it off for better mSD access, but leave it on while NAND is being worked on (you can keep it unscrewed) in case something jogs the console and knocks the battery out.

I see, you must know your stuff. Thanks!
You're also a really helpful friend. The first time I downgraded the process took me an entire day. xD

Believe me. To say ive spent an hour of processing all of this info would be an understatement. I just wanna know if i can upload a link to my Mega. I compiled literally everything needed for emuNand, downgrading, and all of the CFW's and ctrbootmanager. That took me atleast 3 hours cause slow internet.

Good first point. I should probably just admit to what I wanna use it for. I just know that some people are against it. But....It IS his money.
And awesome, I'm starting to get a bit more confident. Thanks!

Don't open it around your new friend. Hack it right after he has left. If you mess it up call him up and tell them the 3DS doesn't work. And make sure you ham it up. Cry if you have to. But make your friend truly believe IT WAS NOT YOUR FAULT.
Alright, blame you, got it. ;D

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Just do it, it will be under warranty anyways.
Thanks!

I pasted this onto a sticky note. Thanks!

I have downgraded three times so far. My 3DS (10.3) and other two from my friends (10.3 and 10.6). No problem at all. All them worked on the first atempt.

All the times before downgrading I formatted the 3DS and the SDCard. It seems to work better I guess.
