Would the Action Replay DSi work for this? I have the version with the micro SD slot. It's not listed as 3ds compatible like the other dsi model.

if it ever worked on the 3DS using the whitelist patch should make it usable
if not, you will need to dump the firmware to make a launcher, it should work fine, since you don't need to remove the AR for it to work

It never did work on the 3DS before. There was another version of the DSi Action Replay that did but the MicroSD version didn't. I'll have to see if I can find someone with a DS or someone with the same version to dump it for me since I only have a 3DS since I sold my DS a long time ago.

IT WORKED! IT FINALLY WORKED!

DS Firmware still asks to setup settings (so that still needs to be fixed). But now I can boot it. This means I can correctly patch other SRLs. Might have better results getting flashcarts to work! YSMenu? No problem. I can fix that one the same way now! Video coming soon! :D

how did you get it to do stuff?

DS Firmware still behaves the same way as it does from flashcart. But it now boots from NAND as DSiWare. This SRL was very picky and wouldn't work at all. Your payload made it work. (had to modify it to jump to the correct address since it was originally set to a different address then your TTDS rom was using)

But that aside, this means I may be able to get many other things working with this. :D

As for adding DSi headers. I do it manually still for retail roms that aren't using the homebrew header layout.

But for rom conversions I now use this:

https://github.com/ahezard/nds-hb-menu

ahezard made this recently and it was used to get hbmenu to work from Home Menu. It includes a python script you can use to convert SRLs to TWL_FIRM compatible ones. Though right now I think it won't work correctly on roms that area already using the 0x4000 header size. But for converting homebrew SRLs to the standard layout, it works great. :D

I can find the firmware file online but it is in the .bin format not .nds is there a way to convert it?

It did. Was blocked on 4.3 I think. Also, would I have to be using the woodr4 kernel or could I be using the kernel that came from it's website?

If it worked on 4.3, chances are you don't even need a launcher for it. TWL_FIRM patches currently public already patch out save chip checks and DS Cart White list, It should boot directly from Home Menu if using latest nightly build of rxTools or prepatched TWL_FIRM installed as CIA.

EDIT: Video is up!

Ok someone posted Action Replay/Max Media Player rom earlier. I tried it on this. See if it works:
