Thanks for the link but what is this? is this some sort of downgrade method? and what's a hardmod? like opening something up physically and making a modification?
If you want to do piracy via hackery, you have to downgrade, and you can't downgrade from 10.5 without a hardmod.

Yes, you (or a qualified person) open up your 3DS and install a connector that lets your PC affect the firmware directly. AFAIK, useless if you didn't back up your own firmware prior to updating.

Or you can get look up menuhax if you're content with just having emulation and translation patches and screenshots. Just don't update to 10.6 yet. Or ever.

No any 3DS on 10.4 to 10.6 can be downgraded with the above method.

I don't believe I backed anything up. So the only way for me to mod my 3DS now is by having to manually open it up?

Sorry...still trying to follow. So I don't need to open my 3DS up or...does this just involve moving files to my SD card then?

edit: my goal is to mainlyjust play backups and emulators. I realize that you guys can supply roms and such which is fine. But i'm still trying to learn how to even get homebrew to begin with.

Alright i'll take a look at this. So I need to dump my NAND first before performing the hard mod? does it matter if I haven't done it before and i'm on 10.5?
Nah just yardmod and you are fine! As you cannot backup without hardmod anyways.

You dump your Nand by doing the hard mod... How old are you?

Relax. I don't have a lot of experience in these things so you'll just have to be patient.

It looks like I will need to do some physical work. And i'm just no interested in doing this. I don't have the hands to do soldering so I might just have to buy another model on a lower firmware as I heard that's much easier to do.

You won't be able to do anything without a hardmod at the firmware you're on. So that's step one.

You won't be able to run (or make) backups without a flashcart if you won't downgrade. You CAN emulate without it, but you won't be able to hack your firmware, and emulators of anything newer than a SNES are hella slow on unhacked firmwares if you're not on a New 3DS.

So I guess if I want to do it the easy way i'll most likely have to find a 3DS with a lower firmware than 10. then?

9.2 or lower, but there are easy ways to get a 9.3-10.3 3DS to 9.2 that don't require soldering.

9.2 or lower

That's a shame. But thanks anyway. I think I could pick up an original 3DS here for about 80 bucks. So I'll see if I can find a 3DS with a firmware of 9.2 or lower. As it seems a lot easier to just move some files off an SD card. And I don't know anyone here I could pay/trust enough to open my 3DS up.

If you don't need kernel access, then you just need a simple entrypoint into Homebrew. This will allow you to access emulators and play ROM files on them as well as use other homebrew apps that don't support piracy.

https://smealum.github.io/3ds/

^ Go to that link. Right now, the entrypoints I believe that work for 10.5 are BrowserHax, MenuHax, NinjHax, and OoTHax. Install the starter pack to your SD card and then try your luck with MenuHax or BrowserHax. If those work, then you can use the OoTHax exploit installer to convert your Ocarina of Time save to an entrypoint into the homebrew menu.

***Game backups require 9.2 or below for FW. You can backup your saves using SVDT if need be.

Thanks. But my primary objective is to play backups. But as you mentioned I can't use it for what I want to use it for. I suppose i'll just either wait for an easier fox or buy a 3DS on a 9.2 firmware or lower now.
