How come? And where's the breaking point for a "useful" firmware version? Would someone currently stuck on 5.5 be as well off as someone on 4.5?
Depends on how it works/what it's exploiting, they could have done a complete rewrite of some stuff that isn't present in older ones like 2.0.0, but all semi-new firmwares should be fine

Does that exclude 5.5.1? Would you advice against buying a 5.5.1 Wii U right now?
Thanks so much for your answers!

There is nothing wrong with buying a fully updated wiiu. The system has at least a dozen great games that you should buy.

Well, if you're not that concerned with having loadiine and Cafiine and such right away with 5.3.2/5.4.0, then 5.5.1 is as good as any other one, as long as you have userspace you can do anything a normal app can, it's just the fancy kernel and loader patches that need special privileges. Hopefully we'll see some more stuff popup soon, I have my own plans and I hope others are interested too. As proven by smea, latest is definitely exploitable to the highest degree, it's just a matter of cleaning things and presenting them in a nice little package with a ribbon

Definitely true, but I also intend on running homebrew and game backups eventually.

That's the impression I got. There's a few busy months ahead of me, so I'm sure I can stand the wait. At least now I can get a good deal on a used Wii U, so there's that.

Thanks again!

I'm only scared about one thing, what if the browser in 5.5.1 forces update?

It's very likely that the browser will do that at some point in time, if they have learnt anything from the 3DS.

kind of in a hurry with this question ( i have used the search function but finding nothing) ,
question is, will IOSU allow Wii (Backups through USB) like with the vWii thingie?

please let me know if that will not work with the IOSU, cause then so i can go on ahead and buy an exploitable game, e.g SSB/Tales of Symphonia : DotW etc.

Probably, but nobody knows for sure. Is Brawl really that much money? It's a good game to own anyways.

i have the SSB game but it is EUR of region and my WiiU is US, so it will not work yes?

i need US SSB yep?

(like you said, it is quite cheap but ordering for me costs 15$ additional on every order ,i use Proxy to order and they are very expensive.)

i will spam a few questions so that i dont have to create a 'thread' xD
i remember on my Wii that i had , i needed to have an extra GC controller/Mem.Card to play the GC "Backups" , and i was wondering how this is done on the WiiU since it does not have the GC controller/mem ports.

(and one more thing, does the vWii modding allow you to play GC 'backups' off a HDD through USB loader!?)

thanks in advance!

So looking at the leaked cafe os files games come in wumad file structure. There is leaked nintwndo software that allows you to convert apps/games to this wumad format.
Any dev with this files can technically create wumads.
So ANY application can make it into the wii u. Of course it probably needs some type of porting besides the wumad conversion.
anybody cares about this?

Why use the Wumads? Wumads are disk images for Cat-R Discs, however I guess you could make usbloaders for it. Tho it's better to make NAND Images (WUP files as their known name here) System config Tool(aka title manager/Devmenu for WiiU).
All the Dev applications have these "Wup" images to install to NAND and System config tool can install such images, so in theory instead of needing WUPinstaller which would probably crash a lot we would only need it once to install System config tool and could have a fully working title manager for installing Homebrew/games from NUS (yes even without a ticket. :p

excellent homebrew flying out over the past few days, but has anyone heard anything of Hykem on irc or otherwise? @zecoxao have you heard anything , pretty sure you said last week he was just documenting some stuffs before releasing?

That was before people got too annoying on GBAtemp, the exploit stopped being the top of Hykem's priorities, and he wanted more homebrew developed prior to its release.

It was never a top priority and he's not waiting for any homebrew. If you just look at his replies you'll see he saying "It's actually my life that's getting in the way of working on this.".
