Downgrades may not be possible however if boot 1 is ever upgraded between versions. Boot1 has been updated 6times already so Nand backup likely not to work as it does on 3ds

What's more exciting is that his "unbrickening" also allowed him direct access to the NAND chip it would seem. In his post you can see he has that doo-hickey plugged directly into his laptop for code input/output (at least I'm assuming so). Very cool stuff in deed.

Is what he is doing any different than what is already known? e,g https://www.reboot.ms/forum/threads/guide-emmc-nand-dump-backup-restore.530/ or is he manipulating the TSOP nand or what?

Could you tell us in what fw the boot1 has changed? In theory we can go back to these fws if we have the same right?

Look through http://yls8.mtheall.com/ninupdates/reports.php to find changes made to boot1. I went back through the last few firmwares and found that it was changed in 5.0.0.
So theoretically, someone could hardmod downgrade to 5.0.0 or higher, if on 5.5.1, assuming they have a backup of their nand.

Edit: It also changed for 4.0.0, and 3.0.0, so assuming they're going along that pattern, you can basically downgrade to the last major number change.

If boot1 is located on either of the nand banks or the emmc then the wii u will be able to be downgraded to any firmware through hardware flashing as long as a previous dump was made and there are no e-fuses for which i have not seen any evidence of.

The boot1 was located on the nand of the wii.
