I would like to fix this myself if possible. I lent a blue O3DS unit to a friend for a long time. I got it back and it won't turn on. When I turn it on, the blue power led lights up and the bottom screen comes on for about 1 tenth of a second before the system shuts off with a *pop* sound. Can anyone tell me what might be causing this? They had it for a while so anything is possible.

Also, the warranty has expired and it is on a <9.2 firmware so I would avoid shipping to Nintendo.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Its water damage, physical damage, or he shorted it somehow with a shoddy outlet and the charger and he simply doesn't want to tell you about it.

could just be a loose ribbon cable, that is actually the most common cause for the "popping" error, easiest way to find out for sure is to only open the 3DS a tiny bit and try powering it on and seeing if it stays on, if it does then the LCD ribbon cable just needs re-seating in most cases

Could be this as well but who knows only way to tell is pop it open and dig around.

maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan D: I have this problem on my O3DS ... I couldnot fix myself yet but let's go fro what the nice people here helped me
Mine was dropped too... well +/- but got impact
Them these symptoms happened.
It can be or the top screen or the ribbon that goes to the speakers, 3D stuff and topscreen all together(also the 3D camera's led).. mine happened to be the screen but I messed so much with the cable that I damaged it xp I think I needa new one but one I have that testing it with a multimeter looks like everything is allright aren't helping me:B

So well if you have another old 3DS that work and you could give a look to test what is damaged
Before that try to turn it on , not openning all the console... live a "V" angle, if it turn on normaly, the ribbon is the problem

Good luck!

open the 3ds and check to make sure all the cables are securely in place. that issue may also be caused by the wifi board coming loose from the system.

It's the dread loose ribbon cable I think, so your friend is not to blame since this is a common problem with the o3ds non-xl. I had this exact problem too with my o3ds. Here's the video I watched that helped.

I have a 3ds XL. I tried this but it doesn't seem to work. Is this the cable you're talking about? I pushed it in as far as it will go.

send it to repair
Here's the thing XD
Upper led ribbon was damaged by friend, circle pad needed replacement, shell was trash before repair. Fuck it, I'm getting another o3ds and putting my mother board in. Maybe sell that 4.5 one for cash on eBay.
