Hey all,

I've recently bought Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection (PS3) so while it seems to include all must-play MGS games I was wondering, what about Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (PSP)? Doesn't that one matter too?

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (PSP) looks to have great gameplay although it was not bundled in Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection (PS3).

Thanks.

I think Portable Ops was semi-canon when it was released, but isn't considered canon anymore.
Kojima doesn't consider it canon, also.
Thanks. So the ones that actually matter are included in the bundle.

No, Portable Ops is canon. It is directly referred to in Peace Walker, and tells the story of how Campbell and Big Boss initially met.

Play it before Peace Walker. Big Boss timeline is currently- [ MGS3 > Portable Ops > Peace Walker > Ground Zeroes > MGSV TPP ]

*added*
*changed*
  1. METAL GEAR SOLID
  2. METAL GEAR SOLID: SPECIAL MISSIONS
  3. METAL GEAR SOLID 2: HD Edition
  4. METAL GEAR SOLID 3: HD Edition (featuring the original MSX versions of METAL GEAR and METAL GEAR 2)
  5. METAL GEAR SOLID: Portable Ops
  6. METAL GEAR SOLID: Peace Walker HD Edition
  7. METAL GEAR SOLID 4: Trophy Edition
  8. METAL GEAR SOLID 5: Ground Zeroes
  9. METAL GEAR SOLID 5: The Phantom Pain
Is this the proper order to play it as?

I'm just asking because since I plan on playing the series then I might as well do it the correct way.

It depends if you want to play it in the series' actual chronological order, or just play it in order released.

Because the chronological order in the series' world is:
MGS3
Portable Ops
Peace Walker
Ground Zeroes
Phantom Pain
MGS1
MGS2
MGS4

And then if you want to play the button masher, Revengeance is last, but meh.

But obviously that's sort of ass backwards in terms of the actual release order, and might sort of ruin your experience of MGS1 (and 2 IMO). I think the order you have picked now is pretty good, though.

Hm, I'd thought that going by Konami's order it would be the proper way but if this is actually how it's meant to be played chronologically then this is it.

By the way, did you really meant to add MGS 3 to the start and to the end? Play the game twice?

Ah, thanks. So it's the following:

  1. MGS3
  2. Portable Ops
  3. Peace Walker
  4. Ground Zeroes
  5. Phantom Pain
  6. MGS1
  7. MGS2

P.S. What about Acid, Acid 2 and the Digital Graphic Novel? Do they fit anywhere with the chronological order?
