Hey,

So I haven't kept track of the "scene" recently and wondered if someone could assist me.

I have an old 3DS XL on firmware 9.2 and I use the Go Gateway exploit to boot into Gateway mode to install CIA's and play games from the Gateway card.

Is there any advantages to the new hacks over doing this? Is there anything I am missing out on?

Thanks

The browser ? For real ? Who does that ?
Well, now that GW made a .3dsx file, you can setup menuhax and CtrBootManager to boot to GW mode instantly when turning your 3DS on (others may say "no need for CtrBootManager, just rename GW.3dsx into boot.3dsx and you're done", but I don't think this has the best boot rate).

Now between rxTools and GW, I'd say it's a tie. rxTools used to win by far before that GW.3dsx but now, GW has some more features like cheats and .3ds, while rxTools has some more features too like no need for a red cart to boot to emuNAND for example.

You can additionally use GBA VC, DSiWare and dump saves from retail cards with sdf or svdt, but 3ds booting doesn't work, so it has its benefits and downsides too, cia installing is really time consuming.
Update compatibility is better but GW often still works, however the select menu doesn't display.

I like Gateway for its cheats and super easy save management.

However, the c-stick stops working if you put it in sleep mode. Unfortunately, sleep mode is also how you fix the 3d on N3DS CFW...

Can you launch .3ds files with any of the custom firmwares? Does anyone know?

I know you can install cia's but for simplicity of being able to launch .3ds files is a pretty cool, important feature for some of us.

Why would you need to launch .3ds files? They are bigger size. Just convert them to .cia and I'll work.
And install them with FBI or devmenu.

All I do is pop the micro sd card out of my kids gateway cart, insert it into my PC and copy the new titles down, put it back in and they are good to go. My experience with CIA's up to this point is the exact opposite in time consumption getting things going.

Better is a subjective term, that is why I was curious why exactly the custom firmware is better. Feature wise it would seem to me you get the best of BOTH worlds by using gateway. I get free is a nice, but that does not necessarily make something better.

Can anyone give me a little advice? I currently have a GW for my 3DS which has been running for ages before CFW was even a thing, now after this downgrade came out a couple days ago I downgraded my brothers 3DS, but can't decide if to use GW or CFW since that is now an option.. My concern with CFW is what happens when a new update comes out such as 10.4 and you update your emunand, how do you update rxtools? And where do you download the latest versions from? Because I read that the guy who made it has now retired and the latest version is from around July last year. With GW as soon as an update comes out within a day they release a new version and all you do is copy the new launcher.dat across to your SD card and then you can update your emunand. My concern with CFW is it may work fine now, but is it as future proof as gateway? The only disadvantage for me to use gateway is that I only have 1 red card which would mean we would have to keep passing it between us everytime we turn on our 3ds.

CFW is free and that is the only pro. GW lets you do things rxtools doesnt and the same goes the other way. It's preference.

If someone is just starting out, going rxtools would be the better option. You'll be taking the time to backup your game cartridges to CIA.

If you're using an existing setup, already converted over all your games to ROM, etc, there is no benefit to now convert them all to CIA to install them directly. If you are moving an existing GW setup from an old system to a new downgrade system, might be best to keep using GW, unless you want to do the conversion.

You simply can open a 3DS ROM on rxtools or CFW.

I personally found merit to move my collection over to CIA, as I wanted to install my key games directly on the system. If all you are using is CIA, there is no benefit to GW over rxtools. If you want to be able to play ROMs without converting them, then you'll need your GW.

Another benefit to GW is being able to plug in your games from one system to another, without having to install the games on the system itself.

The aspect around save games I fail to see the difference between the two. I use a save game installer that works on GW and rxtools, so neither has an advantage over the other. Generally moving around CIA save games are easier than ROM save games.

For CFW: (RxTools here)
1.CFW is free.
2.CFW is opensourced. Your issue could be easily reported. You can even fix the issues if you can code and learn of the console. Don't need to worry if devs run away.
So I wonder if there would finally be some guys that write a 3ds loader. Oh warez?
3.Brick-proof. If you're not a total noob.
4.Provide DevMode that you can use for update the SysNAND.
5.GBA VC, DSiWare, and more.

For GW:
1.3DS is easy to go. Only difference with sky3ds here is this supports modified 3DS files, cause GW patches signature checks.
2.Proved to be a SOON(TM), however it works not bad.
3.Closed source. And had ever implanted bricking code (before). You can not know what it exactly does. Not brick-proof. But most GW users don't need to care about this.
4.Always firmlaunch, thus updating the SysNAND with GW would definitely cause a full brick.
5.Provide region-free for DLC. And AR cheats.

For CIA
1.CIA installing would be time consuming. However when you have a high speed SD card for your 3DS itself, this doesn't take you too long.
2.You can convert any 3DS to a CIA but not the counterwise.
3.Cheats would still apply to this.
4.Including System Version spoof. Not working for EShop. Not much use except avoid a system update.

For NTR
1.You can use NTR-CFW, another closed source but non-comercial software, to cheat, and get region-free ability for DLC on CFWs. Just launch BootNTR on CFW.
2.Can apply on legit cart games.
3.Only brick-proof way for you to get your JPN N3DS of 8.1 to 9.1 with private update server.

For Decrypt9
1.Not a CFW, but that is so important for me and i put this here. That's a decrypter.
2.Can dump/inject Files/H&S/FIRM, and have similar app EmuNAND9 that can create EmuNAND/Dump SysNAND.
3.Can handle CIA/3DS decryption. Yes still no 3DS-CIA automatic feature, but that's good.
4.Very stable. And opensourced.

So for me i would stick on my opensourced+non-comercial plan, refuse to any possibility that would brick my SysNAND.

Yes, but i would admit. If you have money for more stuff, you could just use it to get a GW. So noob-friendly.

with NTR, can you use region locked cartridge games on foreign regions?

Certainly. And i've deal with the Puzzle&Dragon - Mario Edtion - EUR with it on my JPN console without EmuNAND region change.
That would work for out-of-region DLC too.
The only downside is that you have to use its Locale Emulation plugin and set up folder on SD to get the region working.
You could search Google for term "NTR out-of-region DLC" to get the details of how-to.
