What if you have more than one favorite? 2 more buttons to cycle favorites?
They should add a 0-9 numeric square instead then, so you can go straight to any game!

Realistically though, they could add this with a software update
Wouldn't you need two sets of two buttons to cycle? One set for the favorites section, the other for all roms? I'm probably overthinking it, idk.

Further impressions before finishing the review (a little sneak peak, since this thread seems lively):
  • The Sky3DS+ uses FAT32 to great effect, God bless Team Sky! It's a joy to copy stuff to it, no DiskWriter ever again! Remember, 4GB ROMs will have to be trimmed in order to fit, as is the case with Gateway.
  • You can set the cart to create game-specific config files and modify them as you see fit, however creating new templates will require a substantial amount of know-how. Upon examining the config files the cart creates, I've noticed that the previously "Unknown ID" is marked as the 3DS encryption seed, supposedly located at 0x1010 of the ROM. Unfortunately, you need to decrypt the ROM to get to it. Still - good to know, as it will likely allow the creation of templates for the old Sky carts as well (now that we know what it is and where to look for it).
  • The cartridge does have a fully functional micro USB slot (as found on Android smartphones or the Dual Shock 4) and it does work in SD Reader mode when connected to a PC, but it's incredibly slow. Transfer rates ranged between 350kbps-355kbps, far too slow for copying an actual ROM over. It's fine for editing config files, but for copying games you'll need an actual SD reader. I've asked the team if this is how it's nominally supposed to work because it seems off to me - perhaps my prototype unit isn't working correctly. It's also entirely possible that it's the firmware's fault as it's still in testing phases and it can be quite tempermental...
    UPDATE:
After contacting the manufacturer, I was told that the USB interface is mostly there to update the cart's firmware and while it can be used as a make-shift SD reader for quick edits to the files, it is not meant to be used for copying large files like ROMs. Transfer speeds may improve in future updates, however using a high-speed SD reader is recommended.
  • ...speaking of tempermental, the card sometimes has issues detecting that new games were copied over. I had to wrestle with it quite a bit before going the SD Formatter route (Full Erase (Overwrite) + Size Adjust for ultimate cleanliness of your SD's, boys) which seems to have solved the issue. Make sure that your SD's are in good condition before copying games!
  • The cartridge is fast as lightning and the Forwards/Backwards tact switch works great - browsing the games is seamless.
  • It would appear that the Settings file features an option to change the colour of the LED! I've fiddled around with the settings, but to no effect, so perhaps the feature is not yet implemented in the firmware. Dancing LEDs in the future? I sure hope so!
  • The cartridge runs everything I throw at it so far. That being said, I have a queue of Japanese ROMs for testing tomorrow.
Overall, after initial hurdles (which may have been the result of my SDs not being formatted recently, so I can't blame the cart - it works fine now) my impressions are positive. It's the same Sky3DS you all know, but better - a lot better. Expect a review, a guide, full impressions and a compatibility chart tomorrow or the day after, depending on whether or not something unexpected happens!

Can you please say something about how the saving is done on the new orange button card (Sky3ds+)?
Is the pressing of the button, before you eject the card from the console, still necessary to save the last game, like with the blue button card, or it saves the game right after you exit the game and enter the home menu?

Nobody talks about it and that's my major concern with the new card because with the blue button card I had to be super careful every time I eject it because of the danger of losing save file.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

So my question is: with the Blue Button, before ejecting the flashcart, people had to press the blue button in order for it to save your save files to the microSD and not risk losing it. Do we still need to do the same for the Orange Button? If it does, do we just press either of the buttons to do so?

Thanks

I'm wondering the same thing!
Can anybody with the new card answer this question?

3 cart revisions in 1 year...

I'm guessing that your comment is meant in a negative sense which I can understand. However, this could also be a positive insofar as the company is acting quickly to ensure their cart works as it should. When AP appeared and knocked out the Sky cart for new games the forum was awash with "let's see how long this takes Sky to sort out" and "Sky cart is finished" etc. Seems they can't win, damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Anyone see a reseller with Sky3DS+ stock?

Not released till December 22nd apparently.

You got banned for playing online without a private header, AP checks have nothing to do with this.

This hasn't occurred to me - I switch games after saving as an impulse. During testing it saved fine, but I still recommend pushing the game switch buttons just to be sure.

The Sky3ds saved fine without pressing the button, it just didn't write the save to the sd card unless you switch games. I think he's asking if it's the same here. Does it automatically write the save to the sd card with each save or do you have to press the button to do it. Like, save, turn it off without pressing the button, then see if the save is on the sd card

I know what he means, I reviewed the previous two, the issue just didn't cross my mind when reviewing this one because I always switch games before turning the 3DS off. I'll test this in my spare time. ;)

Yeah, you are right. That's exactly what I meant, I just wasn't precise enough.

I'm curious cause it's still a little bit frustrating and dangerous with the blue button Sky3ds card if you keep switching SD cards a lot.
You can easily delete the save file if you not careful enough.
With the orange button version, you are in a much better position because it's so much easier to switch the games back and forth and save every time you make a progress in the game.

Once I found out that the .sav is copied to the SD as you switch games, I just began doing that instinctively and never really thought about it. I'd be surprised if they hadn't fixed it in this revision, but as I said, I'll test it as soon as I get some spare time - no worries. ;)

Ok, thanks! I'd appreciate it.

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

  • cearp @ cearp:
@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
