I disagree. I have no problem with cloning, borrowing or using something as a springboard (I do it all the time in real life, or at least it is my favourite aspect of what I do). Most companies that have gone whole hog into it in flash carts have been incapable of doing much (mainly as it is a lot of continuous work for a small one time payment, seldom a great model in business). On the flip side many of the bigger companies borrowed directly from AKAIO and related projects basically all the time (it was always fun watching the changelogs and how nicely they matched up, especially when AKAIO missed or "missed" an obfuscated check/late game loaded overlay or something).
basing something on something else....sure, copying ideas or bits of code....sure........just being lazy and doing zero work at all and expecting another developer to do the work for you?....i know its a shady business, but i don't see how that could be seen as a positive feature that shows promise of leading to better features, i actually have more respect for the R4 dev's (and thats saying something) for actually putting the effort into trying to understand how gateway launcher works and swapping out the text/graphics to say R4.....any team you want to say are "capable" should be capable of making their own stuff even if they draw inspiration from other dev's or projects....straight up copying is the opposite of capable

Copying does not preclude one from being capable, it is not a basis for making a claim of such things but in this case they do have past deeds to point to. With that said I am very much a fan of results so all things pending that (and maybe a few months in which some work gets done).

but copying does indicate a lack of effort in their current solution, and imho a lack of understanding in terms of how the 3DS works, there is so much already publicly documented, loads of examples and open source projects they could have drawn "inspiration" from to have a working gateway style product up and running in no time at all ......IF they knew how, sure they made a nice NDS flashcard, but in terms of 3DS they haven't done anything new, and this isn't exactly a move that should fill anyone with high hopes for future developments

but alas you are free to hold any opinion you want but personally until they actually step up and release something they made by themselves for the 3DS, to me its nothing more than a clone and no amount of "but a few years ago they did something on themselves" will compensate that, dont forget its a brand name you recognize, for all you know the actual dev's who made the DSTWO and its software may have set sail long ago

It is not impossible that there was some genius dev* that has since left (it happened a few times in flash cart circles as far back as the GBA era -- the story of Borden being a nice example there but there were more less notable examples), however most of the old contact routes for supercard still seem to be many of the same people so I am not expecting sold name/sold brand type situations. That said all this was not mentioned much before now though in public so eh.

*for all I knock the GBA supercards the speed patches they did to help their sub par hardware along took at least some knowledge to pull off, especially compared to save patching (and maybe an entry point/hooking point for sleep/reset/cheat stuff) that all the other cards only had to do.

Nothing new for 3ds? Decent DS flash cart with 3ds ROM capability is novel enough for me to take note.

Even if it is relatively early days for hacking the 3ds it is quite late in the day for the 3ds itself (February next year is year 5 http://gbatemp.net/threads/5-years-of-ds-roms-in-5-days-year-1.236483/ ) and in many regards the 3ds is not doing so well -- 50 odd million sales vs several times that for the DS and many devs having jumped ship. To that end clone, get it on the market and then improve is a viable option from where I sit. I would much preferred to have seen something really nice and novel that I could analyse but as a business decision then might not have been the fastest route.

Had anybody that was not an established mod device maker, possibly even an established mod device maker working in similar systems -- some 360 drive chip maker says tomorrow they are doing something for the 3ds and I would probably treat them similar to an unknown, said they were coming out with something and said a lot of this then I would probably be joining you in being sceptical. Supercard have at least earned the benefit of the doubt from me though.

Supercard lost the benefit of the doubt when they just cloned gateway for slapping '3ds support' on their feature list.

Bias much?

Me biased for supercard? If so now I have heard it all.

If they had claimed to be coming in and saving the 3ds scene... with our gateway clone, then yeah it would have been time to point and laugh at the senile old duffer of the group. I have not seen that and have no moral or philosophical objection to cloning, such as it might be. Historically for flash carts/modding gear it is not a great precedent, as I mentioned elsewhere, but we tended not to see actual groups with actual skills go in for it, occasionally such groups rose above it (Team cyclops perhaps, actually started out by cloning the supercard as was mentioned earlier on) but there is a reason R4 is a byword for lousy quality and poorly supported in these circles.

inb4 gateway drop fat32 support and switch to exfat only just to inconvenience supercard into having to add exfat support to their NDS side of things.....or having to edit the latest launchers to enable fat32 again, or just leaving their customers to either carry around 2 SD cards to switch between NDS and 3DS mode or not use newer updates

basically as much as i would love to think supercard stepping up to the plate as a positive thing, the gateway cloning feels like a very cheap and lazy cash grab......, and as was the case of R4/3DSlink etc leaves their customers to the mercy of gateway......who we already know not to be very merciful when it comes to people cloning their work. (PS tell the people who were bricked using clones that cloning is a good thing for the community, and im not just talking about gateway here....historically speaking, clones are very much always walking a fine line when it comes to using updates from the original coders, and its virtually always the end user that suffers the consequences of the team behind their clone deciding to be lazy)

all im trying to say, is it *could* have been so much more, drawing from the community in a positive way and contributing....will they change it up in the future? who knows....personally i would have been more impressed if they had embraced CFW's with it and put out some source code to enable their card to work with current CFW solutions....they still get to be lazy and leave the majority of future updates to other dev's.....but those other dev's would probably welcome them rather than be hell bent of knocking them down a peg

Why any flash cart maker desiring to stay in business would aid the development/appeal of a custom firmware I have no idea -- about the only source I have seen supercard drop is for the DSTwo's internal CPU and they prevented the ismm (which was an oem iplayer with the DStwo kernel backported) from releasing a similar SDK for its internal CPU, on the scorecard of flash cart companies that would probably then mean M3 were the only ones worse off thanks to that whole Rudolph and Sakura thing (Japanese but http://kotei.blog.so-net.ne.jp/2008-06-28 for the curious). As a warm up for tricks of that level though I reckon world peace will do.

"tell the people who were bricked using clones that cloning is a good thing for the community"
I will. Sucks that gateway were cunts of such magnitude; that really was unprecedented. Also yeah buying a clone now means I hope you can get what you need out of it now as the future will tend not to be rosy, hopefully nearly 5 years of 3ds games... oh wait I see your point.

you know what, maybe I'm being to hard, i know its your job to report these things and try to come across all unbiased and look at it as a person that doesn't know anything at all about A or B and just report on how it works and keep out of the nitty gritty "speculation" and just say "does this do what it says it does?.....yes, yes it does!"

I know back in the day the gba and DS had teams copy other work, some even made there own launcher, I think thats how moon got started in the DS scene. But this is a whole new ballgame, the nintendo portable consoles can now be updated to block anybody's work. So when the cheese starts happening when 1 dev team breaks the bubble by producing a flash card that can play backups (slow start but they finally had multi-rom support later) I feel that work like that should be noticed. When someone else copies that work just to make a profit by slashing the price, or in this case an all in one card and not to mention try to boost about a better cpu (this also has been confirmed to be false by someone in a chinese forum) thats pretty low. I'll aplaud sky3ds for being different from GW, but supercard? Nah....

If they made the card useable with current CFW that would make it a) more convenient than Gateway and b) not at the mercy of Gateway's launcher.dat. Most CFWs are open source so getting their card to work with them wouldn't be impossible, or they could tweak them and release their own version which works with their card.

The DSi/3ds have seen update/counter update happen for a while now, the evolution of DS anti piracy was not exactly a static affair and yeah if the hackers had only learned on the DS or something then maybe but update-counter update has been common for years on all sorts of embedded systems and other commonly hacked things.

"[I know your job is] to report these things and try to come across all unbiased and look at it as a person that doesn't know anything at all about A or B and just report on how it works and keep out of the nitty gritty "speculation" and just say "does this do what it says it does?.....yes, yes it does!" Though that is something that is encouraged to at least get out there I am quite free to engage in long term reviews, we often have revisited items at a future date and considered their current merit and speculation upon future potential is all but essential in hardware reviews.
On biases I am quite free to have them (I really do not like sports games and yeah I am probably biased against them), and in flash carts I guess I could have preferred methods of operation (though the market favoured drag and drop over the still near trivial savelist approach in DS flash carts I will plump for the one that does something like that -- savelist stuff carried on working until below 8000h stuff was developed and reinvented in various forms after that) however being biased for a flash cart manufacturer would be a fairly pointless thing.

Flash card to boot opensource cfw, sounds like a plan.

Why would you need a flashcard to boot a CFW? It's like paying for something that's totally free FFS. All in all realistically speaking the DSTWO Plus should not cost more than an average DS flashcard since all the features it "provides" can be applied for a total sum of $0 and a hour of research.

People who don't want to jump through hoops of accessing CFW, not sure if we have that many experience users yet but if the open source devs can utilize the card to help them load cfw easier that would be a plus and they focus more on adding more features to CFW. But than again, in thinking about how the current dstwo+ works, it might not work because the compatibility of is only between 4.5 - 9.2.

the 3DS flashcart scene is more complicated than Syria. let me explain.

We all want a open source CFW but you only get updates if gateway updates they product, Gateway which has the skills to by-pass new encryption made by Nintendo . So if you want CFW you need gateway to do they thing.

But open source CFW needs a team too, with skilled Devs who has time on they hand. which is kinda hard cause its not a paying job is a hobby at best.

but any competition in the flashcart scene is dead cause the only skilled people are Gateway and the others just copy and paste. Every time the competition copies and pastes gateway bricks they Customers 3DS.

Any the likelihood of flashcart team with more skills than gateway is dead. because being in the flashcart business and having the skills to by-pass Nintendo is oxymoron.

Oh you want to play 3ds games for free on 9.3 or plus 3DS thats another story.

we are doomed to the hands of Gateway ATM.

Im not gonna buy a supercard but lets hope supercard has one or two tricks up its selves, which is unlikely.

You don't have to explain that to me, I'm not the one whose always crying for "free stuff" or "I want this feature on abc". I sit back and enjoy the show, the challenges and the blocks.

Was the card released? It doesnt same coming soon anymore and you can download its files
