Homebrew What is homebrew?

I know this is probably a stupid question, but what exactly IS homebrew? Can someone please explain it to me? Thanks loves!

It's software written by hobbyists rather than software houses. It's usually free and open source, and in the case of restricted systems like the 3DS (and most other games consoles) it requires the use of system exploits to run it.

No. The hack is what lets you run the Homebrew. First you boot the 3DS, then you run the hack (exploit), that takes you into the Homebrew launcher to run a homebrew app.

Not really hilarious at all. She's obviously a beginner and came to this forum to learn and to get started. What's wrong with that?

Google '3DS hacking' or '3DS flash carts' results in GBATemp as the first result. In any case, does it really matter? Is there any need to be so rude?

Not trying to be rude I'm Scottish and it's how we talk to people here we are more direct than other people but if you guys think it was rude then sorry it's just the way we do things here and I forget I am not talking to other Scottish people at times lol

Others have mostly taken it but I should also say it is relatively new term as far as these things go -- I am not sure where it came from but I am guessing it an extension of the "free as in speech or free as in beer" concept that is associated with the whole open source/free software thing. If you go looking on older consoles (N64 and older) it was often called PD (public domain), hence things like http://pdroms.de/ . For devices end users could happily code for (think Amiga, Spectrum, Amstrad, C64, Vic20, BBC micro... basically things that run Basic or descended from them) then it gets even more blurred, though as said consoles saw end users code for them at the time and ever since then it is not so bad.

PD is not the best term from a legal standpoint (assuming public domain exists where you are then it means something, it is entirely possible to have closed source and paid homebrew though where closed source and paid PD is not really a thing) but yeah if you go looking around old console hacking/homebrew/modding sites and you see PD/public domain somewhere in the name/description that is what it means. There is not an awful lot of truly great merit there -- not many emulators worth speaking of, not many applications, not many high level games* but there are some very nice demos, some applications at times and some simpler games (think tic tac toe, sliding puzzles and such like) and as such it is worth noting.

*there has been some great homebrew released for old consoles (see something like super bat puncher http://morphcat.de/superbatpuncher/ ) but a lot of that was made after homebrew became the term people settled upon.

Originally at least here in Scotland Homebrew was called bedroom programing and started back in the 80s when people traditionally had their computers in the bedroom as computers became more popular people began to put them in different rooms in the house and the name changed to homebrew

Lol yep back in the 80s I had a zx 48k (timex for our American friends lol) and it's how I first learned programing first in basic then machine code and it has developed from there and I can pretty much program in any language lol oh and forgot to say if you did do any programing back then you were called a bedroom programmer lol
