Hacking 3DS NOOB PARADISE - Ask questions here

SO, uh. I'm totally and entirely new to this whole 3DS flashcard scene thing, and here's a bunch of questions that I have that are hopefully not annoying at all:

1. I've got an original 3DS with the latest firmware (10.1.0-27U). By my understanding, I can't downgrade. Therefore, only a Sky3DS would work with my 3DS, right?
2. I've read almost all the stickied posts here, and I'm still very confused on the topic of custom firmware. The whole CFW vs. flashcarts thing seems to be a hot button topic over here, and so here's my question: how does CFW work on a 3DS, and what can you do with it compared to say, Gateway?
3. I currently own a standard DSTwo for my 3DS to play DS games, and I recently heard that a new DSTwo (Plus?) model is to be released soon. Is the 3DS part of that new model really just a copy of Gateway, meaning that you'd have to be on previous firmware to use it?
4. Simple question: what's the deal with everyone (seemingly) hating Sky3DS, when compared to Gateway, for example?
5. Oh gosh, you can clearly see I'm overwhelmed here at this point, hopefully. At the end of the day, should I grab a Gateway, Sky3DS, mess around with CFW, wait for the new DSTwo, or just wait for a while and see if some new developments come up? I'm pretty patient, so I've no problem waiting if recommended.

I'm trying to be as openly friendly as possible; I know my questions are pretty noob-ish, so apologies and thanks in advance!
 
Just got a N3DSXL on 9.0 and wanted to know if I could use a Gateway card to update the EmuNAND to 9.5?
Looking at games Garfield Kart seems to require 9.5 firmware so was wondering if that would work.

1. True, you can only use Sky3DS and HomeBrew when on 9.3+ firmware.
2. Custom firmware allows you to install games (.cia) on the SD card, while flash carts store games on their own.
3. No idea, it's possible it may be for the 3DS and support higher.
System exploits are usually kept secret so no one really knows.
4.
- The Sky3DS emulates the game card, the Gateway 3DS emulates the system.
- Gateway has a Game ROM menu and a ton of nifty system tools, Sky3DS can't play the new Animal Crossing game.
5. Your on 10.1, if you want to do anything with CFW or Gateway you'll need a lower firmware system.
From what I can remember any 2DS or 3DS (Not N3DS) will be under 9.2 if it's never been open.

Gateway or any CFW can upgrade your emuNAND. Get the 9.5.0-23 update files for your region from "some iso site." Copy all of the files to your SD card. Use the cia installer of your choice (I'd recommend Big Blue Menu) to install all of the files on emuNAND. Your emuNAND should now be on 9.5.0-23. Make a backup of your emuNAND with EmuNAND Tool before attempting this!

Adding onto and clarifying daftmink,

1. Yes, only sky3ds works and by extension certain homebrew exploits which you can find more info about here http://smealum.github.io/3ds/ (but most usually the cubic ninja one since that's what you have to have in your sky3ds)

2. CFW has the amazing capability of not needing a flashcart to run your .cia. Gateway installs .cia too but at the end of the day it boils down to booting up your 3ds. If you use CFW, you can opt to not requiring an external physical cartridge or flashcart in order to boot up emunand. But if you don't use CFW, then for example with gateway you'll need to have the flashcart inserted everytime you power on the device. Also from personal experience CFW gives you more freedom in the sense of being able to play your retail games after loading instead of needing to hold L at boot, inserting GW flashcart then navigating to boot gateway classic mode (which has its own set of cons) and whatnot.

3.about the dstwo plus, no one knows anything about it. You'll just have to keep an eye on the official website/gbatemp until more information is released

4. Yes, sky3ds emulates card and gateway emulates system and the whole reason sky3ds is being hated on is because of that bloody button. It's the most tedious POS to ever exist. Basically to switch roms on sky you need to press the blue button and cycle through whatever roms you have until you find the one you want to play. One by one. Wait till it loads, then press.. Also Yes, if you had 20+ roms,... Well... Goodluck.
With GW, all you need to do is press SELECT then cycle through your Roms. And you don't need to wait for it to load or anything.

5. Your only realistic option at this point is to go with sky3ds. Unless you decide to sell your system and look for one with fw 9.2 and lower you're simply S.O.L mate. There's a thread dedicated to finding N3ds on firmware 9.2 and lower. It's a few posts earlier above yours if i recall correctly
 
Possibly really really silly question, but I just have to ask it.

I think everybody will agree that in order to play DS games backups on 3DS youll need a DS linker (like, say, DSTWO).
But what about the DS homebrews? Is a DS linker also mandatory? Or is there a way to run them without it?

As long as it's .nds format, you need a flashcart. It makes no difference if it's real games or homebrew.

Can someone tell me where I can download 3ds roms? I tried to google but all I got was some surveys and broken download links.
 
So I check in every so often to see what advancements have been made with the 3ds flashcart scene. I'll have to read and catch up a little but what am I missing by not having my 3DS XL up to date? I've been keeping it at 9.2 for the past year and 1/2 or whenever it came out. I can't get to the store or do any extra stuff with my 3ds. I shouldve bought a Gateway back when they were cheaper lol but was waiting for the 'next thing.' It would be easy to just update and use a Sky3ds but I hear they finally did some security updates to block it from doing newer games. I've been able to find quite a few 3ds games second hand. If I get a Gateway, what will happen to my current downloaded games? I have pokemon Y downloaded and Mario & Luigi installed as I have "year of luigi" 3DS. Will those get wiped out with the new Gateway firmware? I forget, can I make a backup before hand? Just don't know which way to go, hate that i've been missing out on stuff.

I want to remove some old homebrew and GBA games which i installed using a CIA. how would i go about removing them?

thats easier said than done.

its not exactly windows we are using here.


in all of the installers it dont have the name, it has numbers, and no idea what number is what.

It's as easy to do as it's said. I know because I've done it.
Check the title IDs or serial ID and compare it here to see which games it belongs to:
http://3dsdb.com

You can use the search function in that website.

Boot into CFW beforehand. Go to System Settings > Data Management > Nintendo 3DS > Software. You can uninstall them from there.

Well.. That's also true. Just not sure if it shows every game installed.

Oh.. and btw.. if you want to keep your saves, you need to backup them before deleting the game or they'll get removed too.

You can try @BobDoleOwndU method to see if it shows (I don't know if it does). Or if you still have the original rom from which you converted to CIA, you can also try to check its titleID or serialID.
