I've looked in the threads, but I don't know what FTP is. Some people say it's a server, but a server for what?

You use it to (shock) transfer files back and forth.
Everything is GUI now, but I learned ftp from a prompt (unix or dos).

File Transfer Protocal. It was designed for file transfer over networks on the internet. Its like HTTP web sites but for files. Its been around for a while and uses native unix commands. Use Filezilla for your ftp client and you dont need to know the ftp commands. Modern web browsers also display ftp sites like web pages.
I run a ftp site on my server. I use it as my own personal cloud storage

So, I've seen it before. Could anyone link me to an app that used your 3DS to transfer content through your computer, so you don't have to take out your SD Card?

Assuming you have homebrew already, just launch ftbrony on your 3ds and filezilla on your pc and then connect to the 3ds.

Get the right FileZilla, though. You want the 'client' (assuming your files are hosted elsewhere), not the 'server'.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is about as basic as it gets and is one of the earliest network (or more of just computer-to-computer at the time) protocols.

It's rather straightforward on the front end. You have the "server", which sits there listening on an open port, waiting for requests and commands. Then you have the client, that sends the requests and commands. You control the interaction client side. It generally has very low overhead and is convenient for sending or receiving information over a network. For over the Internet, you'll want something more secure than FTP. There are a few servers/clients that expand on the protocol, adding security, encryption, and a few other features designed for use over the internet, that's generally designated as FTPS.

Just a little detail, but this is FTPS. SFTP is an entirely different protocol that implements file transfer over secure shell (SSH), which is not compatible with FTP.

In a nutshell, it is like a website but only for file storage. So for the 3DS, you can use FTPBrony to load homebrew apps on your 3DS without SD card removal.

FTP, its that doohicky that lets you take a file from them there 'puters and put em on the "sed" cards? on yer 3deeess and do it wifout taken dem dere "sed" cards out.

I personally use FTP-3DS because I'm not a brony and i use filezilla to connect.
