Heyo!

So, I have a thought. Does any major backup loader support playing backups from a NAS? I've tried to google answers but mostly what I see is back from '09/'10 relating to the original Wii. Essentially, I only have one "good" external harddrive which is currently configured for my NAS. Would it be possible to use it as my backup location for vWii backup loading?

Thanks.

I honestly don't know? Although in this sense, if it worked with the Wii it SHOULD work with vWii, as long as it doesn't involve installing anything to the console to get it to work

This is a thing for the regular Wii? I'm going to have to check this out for sure, save me about 300GB in space haha.

Sorry but what does NAS stand for again?

Yep. davebaol actually discussed the issues he ran into just a few posts later in the thread:
davebaol said:
It was just an attempt. Games start loading but there are random read errors due to some problems with NFS implementation on ARM and I gave up months ago. TBH I think I won't try to fix it.
It is possible somebody else could try and do it, but nobody has done any work on cIOS since the WiiU came out (and there was no work done besides adding vWii compatibility for a long time before that).

WODE was an early drivechip for the Wii. Think ODE. IT was able to play over the network due to it having it's own dedicated controller and chipset to operate on.

The Wii doesn't really allocate enough resources to satisfy the bandwidth requirements without quite a bit of overhead.

some emulators have network support.

For a 1MB NES title, that'd be easy and the emulator likely caches the entire game in memory allowing it to run. For a Wii title of 500MB-4GB, that's a different story. Not only does your NAS have to have capable read/write speeds, your network has to handle the bandwidth to allow it along with the Wii as well. I was silly to ask if it was even possible earlier in this thread - I left my intuition to the wind haha.

It's a perfectly reasonable assumption - truthfully data would only need to be streamed as needed. Given yes, the reason emulators are supported is due to the reason you listed above, the Wii has plenty of memory to push a 1-10MB rom into memory. The problem is most network devices can support all the way up to 10/100/1000 ~ theoretical 118-120mb/s, but the Wii is pretty much hard capped at around maybe 200-800k second - fairly terrible, and on par with the USB 1.1 of the PS2 - and we all know how that went.

Interesting. In terms of network, I have an excellent home network and the drive is USB 3.0, so streaming the games would be theoretically possible if the Wii could keep up with the data rate. I didn't know the Wii was hard capped with its data speeds so stringently.

On a different note, what emulators support network streaming?
