How is MGSV so far for you all? Is it better than the previous entries? Do you dislike the limited options in terms of free roam? Let me know what you think below.

BTW Peace Walker was originally MGS 5, it was during the planning stages though. I played Peace Walker and I loved it. I love MGSVTPP, but since it is free roam I am getting an eh feeling from it. Now while I do prefer the linear route, I'm trying to get used to the new direction. Now don't get me wrong, everything is fascinating, but ever since I played the previous entries that hit's home more, but anyhow MGSV is amazing, I have beat majority of the game in under 50 hours,That's why I said I had an ehh feeling (before I made an edit) eariler during the missons, I must be a good player lol.

I don't trust media reviews so I'd like to hear some impressions as well. I don't like how it has a Peace Walker style mission system but I'd love to hear some long-time MGS fans' opinions. I've never played it and that includes the demo so I'm totally ignorant when it comes to this game. MGS3 is my favorite MGS game so the closer it is to 3, the better. Does it have asstons of DLC scams and/or microtrans nonsense?(those are dealbreakers if done excessively) I'm out of the loop as far as gaming news goes so excuse me if some of my questions are outdated.

I love this game. The way you can tackle any of these missions is limitless. Wanna be stealth? Go for it. Wanna just go in and blow things up? Kidnap a tank and call it in. Wanna kidnap everybody? Do it. You can even mess with the guards in new and inventive ways. Throw in a decoy and put a sleep mine on it and watch people freak out. See a guard after picking up the prisoner? Just throw the prisoner at him. Don't even get me started with the cardboard box. As you can see I'm only 26% done with this game and still loving it. There are no micro transactions or none that I have explored. It's nowhere near MSG3 but it's a new experience that I enjoy.

Well i do think MGSV offers the best gameplay in the series. The controls were a bit stiff in the other games.
But story and content wise its a bit underwhelming, you can tell they streamlined a lot of stuff... i thought the story didn't have an arch at all and when things are really starting to get interesting... it ends.
But i still say it has the best gameplay of all other games, but i can see how lovers of a more linear style game might not like this that much. I felt that way with Peace Walker but then it grew on me and now i think its great because it offers more replayability and challenges.
I haven´t seen any microtransaction stuff still, but i havent used the online mode much.

Thanks for the impressions, and when I'm talking about DLC scams I'm mostly talking about the single player campaign because that's all I care about in a Metal Gear game. So the story is a bit underwhelming? Does it have that same "charm" MGS1-4 had? It's hard to define but I'm basically asking if it feels like a MGS game or did they fuck with the formula too much.

I know exactly what you mean by charm, and yes it has that charm in it, part of that charm is trying something different and that is present here, i just feel certain things just left unanswered, the cut scenes are amazing but mostly short. I'm kinda pissed off that the last mission was cut off the game and it would be a great one. All that survived is a incomplete scene as a bonus on the documentary blue ray.
I don´t think they fucked up the formula, its an evolution of what it was before and a good one in my opinion, feels more natural and its more deep too.
Basically this game is Peace Walker on crack.
The only DLC i hope in the future is that cut mission i talked about, hopefully extended. And also something you lose after mission 45 that you later want back... can't tell you more just remember 45 and know that after you do that mission you will get pissed off (i wish someone warned me but i been living under a rock to avoid spoilers).

I'm a little turned off by the smilarity to PW but it's still a game I would love to try out. the mission system is not my favorite format but as long as the missions are fun, I'm cool with it. It's unfortunate the story is incomplete considering what's been happening over at Konami lately; this is likely the last true MGS game.

That said, I've never played it and the only way for me to evaluate the game is for me to play it for a while, and it's nice to hear that it still has that charm to it. Thanks for answering my questions.

When they announced the "open world" gameplay, I was expecting something like a third person far cry game, but all we got was another Peace Walker entry.

Huge Metal Gear fan here; loved Peace Walker a lot.

So... first impressions about this game (I'm about fifteen hours in so far). I'll try to keep it as spoiler free as possible.

It does feel like Peace Walker quite a bit- the mission structure, the building of the Mother Base; that's all very PW. The open free world they put you in seems amazing, up until you bump into one of MGS trademark "Oops, you moved slightly and now there are guards swarming" moments- the complete lack of a manual save.

The game entirely eliminates the series trademark codec frequencies. That means no dialing up a friendly lass to save your game and get proverbs from. Instead the game uses a "checkpoint" system, with arbitrary points littered about the field, sometimes aggravatingly far from spots you wish you could save in. One mission I was in, the helicopter placed me right on top of a rather irritated bear- the only checkpoint in the entire mission came after I had wasted ammo and suppressor on the bear and NO PLACE ELSE in the mission.

The story seems incredibly sparse for a Metal Gear game; most of what I've picked up has been from various tapes they give you between missions.

But so far it's been fun. The enemy AI has a habit of adapting to whatever techniques you're most successful at using, which can lead to a bit of headscratching when planning your infiltrations. The controls are intuitive and incredibly smooth- not just for a Metal Gear title, but just in general. Everything just feels right- not at all cumbersome.

One final note I found out though- apparently Konami was so eager to dump this game onto the public that they scrapped the entire final chapter, so apparently the game ends... very, very abruptly. I haven't gotten to that point yet, but there was supposed to be three acts and they only put in two of them. Because, you know- pachinko.

The similarities to PW have me a little turned off but when/if I decide to buy a PS4. I'll just have to try the game out. I'll probably wait until it's dirt cheap though because the whole Peace Walker style just isn't my cup of tea.

Do you mean the mission-type structure? Because if you disliked that element of Peace Walker, be aware that you're getting a big saucerful of it in GW, at the expense of a number of Metal Gear's classic gameplay elements...

Yep, that's exactly what I don't like about PW. The mission structure is a tremendous turnoff for me and it's also not very encouraging that multiple people are saying the game is very stingy with the story. I prefer one big continuous game like in 1-3 and to some extent 4 despite 4 having chapters. The mission structure just isn't my style.

Stingy with the story... yes, that mirrors my experience with V. Outside of the prologue, so far the majority of the story is told in tapes and small cutscene snippets.

About 90 hours in, had to try really hard to not just fly through all of the missions earlier on, so I spent a lot of time playing FOB and side missions. I thought I'd hate the story earlier on, but now I don't think it's so bad. Sure, I did feel that there was something missing, though I think that was because of the fact that we all know the game was cut short, with mission 51 being in the bonus disc and all. I have never been too much of a big fan of MGS in the first place, but one of my friends still loves everything about this game, despite some of its supposed flaws. For me, who has only played Peace Walker, and never really got through finishing the other games (though I have gotten summaries and such from my friends), reading up on some information on Venom Snake, Miller, and Ocelot on the wiki really cleared up some things for me, especially about some of the things that may have left you hanging at the end of MGSV. Just try not to be tempted to read up on anything until after you've finished the game. I should probably also get to listening to all of the tapes and stuff too, as I flew through the game without ever listening to most of them, and a lot of the story is within those tapes.

Right now, I'm just waiting for MGO3 to come out for PC. By then, my friend will have caught up to me, and we'd both be ready to do some tactical espionage operations together.

Well it's possible to use the cardboard box as a toboggan and barrel over enemies. Is that charming?

Well, after much thought, I now know Big Boss' ultimate weakness. It's not armies of enemies, hostile wildlife...

It's sand.

Knee-high hills of sand.

The man can singlehandedly infiltrate heavily guarded forts. He can fulton out a tank, or take a bear back to his home.

But ask him to walk up a slight sandy incline and you're outta luck.

This god damned sand is the bane of my existence, trying to infiltrate near rocks, clambering up hills only to just slide back down because of SAND.

Swish. Swish. Swish.

I think I'm one of the few who loved MGS1-3 more than the recent titles like MGS4/5 and PW/Zeroes, and proudly admits it. I was initially turned off by the newer games although I eventually started to like them. I didn't like how they were streamlining everything. MGS5 is pretty good but it's not the same as previous games. Of course with all of that being said none of this is even remotely relevant because of Quiet, who is hands down the best thing to happen to the MGS universe since staring at Meryl's ass in MGS.

I just blew the whole "Open World" idea away with a bug I just bumped into.

Turns out that if you manage to wiggle past the slidy sands onto an upper plain you're not "supposed" to go into, you end up bumping into an invisible wall that halts your progress, forcing you to go back to the path the game wants you on.

So... it presents itself as open world, but in reality is just a series of linked set pieces connected via roadways.
