Hacking R4i RTS 3DS help?

I want to update my R4i RTS 3DS to the latest firmware (V1.82B). So I downloaded the file and insert it into my Micro SD card, but on my 3DS all the pops up is a black screen. My 3DS is Ver. 9.4.0-21U. Am I supposed to update my 3ds in order for the new firmware to work?

The reason why I want to update is because I'm trying to play a game called Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side 3 (the english patch came out a few weeks ago). I've downloaded the clean rom and I've patched it correctly. I even tried it on Desmume to see if it works correctly and it does. But when I installed in on my R4 (using old wood firmware) all that popped was the loading screen. Please help!!

First, You need to open the update on the R4 Menu
Second, you need to restart the R4
and Finally, you can use R4 with update
But some games don't work :c

You can't do this
No You have to redownload the old kernel and apply update :c

The card has like 99% compatibility. Almost every game should work.

I downloaded the new kernel: updated sd.JPG new homescreen.jpg
But I still get that red loading screen when I try to play Tokimeki Girl's Side 3 (patched & unpatched version). I also tried to play the first game in the series (which is similar) and that doesn't work either when it used to before (I get this white screen): white screen.JPG
To make sure nothing was wrong with the flashcart, I tested it on Mario Kart and that game worked perfectly fine.

I think it's very weird that a game that worked on the old kernel doesn't work on the new one. Please help.

There are some settings when pressing X/Y (not sure which button it was). Maybe you can fix them by disabling some real time features or some other settings. You might want to set the size of the savegame manually.

I tried all the different savegame sizes (4k - 64m) and I still get that red loading screen. How do I disable the real time features? And I apologize for the late reply.

Press start -> Properties or options or something like that, go through the pages with L/R and stop when you see Real Time stuff (Softreset/Real Time Save/RTS).
