How do you game?

mario-box-question-mark.gif

On this relatively quiet week in gaming news, if anything, we could take some time and reflect on our gaming habits. Whether relating to the time you game, the place you do, with what you game or some other particular gaming quirks of yours, it varies from gamer to gamer.

First of all when do you game? In the morning? During the day? At night? Or simply whenever you have free time (does this even exist nowadays…)? While some game for a living, the majority will prefer completing their daily activities before levelling up in their game. We all have a preference for the time we game. For me, it’s mostly in the afternoon and Sunday is my gaming day!

Honestly, this picture is too cliché

Next up, where do you game? That’s something I never paid much attention to until I was going through the games I beat on a particular year. And all games I beat were either on a handheld console or via an emulator on my phone. Someone thought that I did this due to time constraint but really it’s all about the ease of access of handhelds. I’m really lazy to go boot up my TV and load a game through a home console and so prefer the ease to game on the go. But it could be for other reasons. The TV might be in high demand in your household or you might have to fight with your sibling over it. If you travel a lot, it’s easier to carry your handheld around. But for sure a handheld can’t match a beefed up home console in terms of hardware and dedicated games. But don't we wish for a console that works as both handheld and home console *cough* NX *cough*… Is that too far-fetched of a dream?

Also, do you eat? I mean, other than fulfilling one of the basic physiological human needs (which you shouldn’t neglect or you might end up like this Taiwanese guy), do you snack while you play video games? Hot pockets might be thinking it’s gamers’ staple food, but you might have better (healthier?) alternatives. I remember my friend in high school would have his lunch while playing on his PSP (then just released) and get all the crumbs and grease all over his new console. It wasn’t far from being the most repulsive gaming sight I’ve witnessed. I’d go for roasted and salted peanuts anytime.

Gaming should be a fun and rather relaxing activity. But extended periods of gaming sessions might lead to discomfort. That’s why we have so many accessories to remedy this. Whether improving our gaming experience or our posture while sitting, gaming accessories are not lacking. Suiting your needs, they range from the $13 Sonic knee socks (with quills!) to the $49,150 Emperor 200 gaming chair. Personally, the simple comfort of my bed satisfies me.

We all have gaming habits that’s unique to ourselves. It’d be interesting to hear about yours! If you didn't realise you had one, think about it, you'll surely notice one that defines the gamer that you are.

So Tempers, how do you game?

I just do what feels natural :creep:
Being serious though, I just do what I can with what I have nearby. I don't believe in saving for a $10000 dollar computer to run a 12 year old game from my childhood (Super Mario Sunshine (Just occurred to me that I'm 4 years older than it... The time sure does fly :wtf:!)) when I could use a $250 laptop I already own or use my Wii/Gamecube. For those that have a problem about how I game, remember this... You do you (if you want to spend $10000 to build a PC to run Gamecube games, by all means go for it. Just don't judge me for not doing the same.), and I'll do me (which is work with what I have and wait until I can see why to I need to expand.).
Unless you're running those things in UHD with max anti-aliasing across a multi-monitor span, that is one hell of an exaggeration.

Before I left to travel across the country, I built my brother a machine for gaming. For $630, the machine was capable of full Wii/GCN emulation at max frames of whatever the system was in upscaled resolutions.

Well, console wise I game almost daily. I aim to complete everything in games that I havent yet, or I play a game in a franchise I havent played yet. Since I moved, I really play solo most of the time which, honestly, is weird since most of my games are multiplayer. I did the LP thing for a while, still kinda do. Handheld wise I play at work or on the toilet (dat comfort).

The only console games I've been playing as of late is with my 5 year old nephew.. It's so much fun seeing him get excited, beat a level, get mad when he loses, etc.

I also enjoy Clash of Clans on my phone.

That last pic with the consoles all in their cubicles looks awesome but just imagining with the wires.. Yeah.. No.

How do I game? Old consoles I tend to use emulators and for current-gen I just play on Wii U, well, it'd be more accurate to call it "Mario Kart 8 Box" since that's all I ever play on it.

Super Mario Sunshine is the best. Love that game. :yay:

Please tell me you are the artist of the piece. I want to frame it.

I usually game in one of 3 ways.

1. Is probably the most frequent. Sitting on my futon or couch with my handheld. Any time I am home and have some free time, there is a good chance that I am playing a handheld. Consoles take too much work :P I like being able to play for very very small bitesided gaming sessions if need be, and not be strapped to a chair in front of a TV to enjoy my gaming. I tend to like the games targeted at handheld players more anyways.

2. On my futon or standing, playing any of my consoles. Even if consoles are too much work, I still play them. Destiny has taken a lot of my time in the past year. I either sit close to the TV or stand of my bosou ball and wobble as I play.

3. Is when I am out and about. Sometimes I take my handhelds, but more than usual I will just make sure to have my phone ready to go with DraStic, My Boy and My Old Boy emulators. Its great to play some DS RPGs that I never had time for before. And now all I have to do is pull out my phone while in line for something, grind a few battles on 4x speed and im ready to go for later, when I sit down and play some more.

I don't generally eat or anything when I game, cause I need my hands for gaming. Drinks? Usually a large thing o water. Hydrate, mothercookers!

I play alone, usually after I come home, in the evening, when I'm not busy with other stuff. I also play handheld games if I'm somewhere for a long time (like the subway).

As my Backloggery confirms, I play anything. They split between two positions: on my desk and on my bed. Bed is reserved for handhelds.

I don't eat while I game. I hate having dirty keyboard/controller/buttons. It's something that really pisses me off. I do drink sometimes.

Pic related. I'm always lazing out on a couch, bed.

That being said I keep flipping through my backlog after playing a game for 10 minutes, I can't stick with a game for more than that.

@Gamemaster1379 I understand how it might be for you. As we grow older, we encounter several constraints like time, work and private life which hinder our ability to game to the level we want, so we have to make do.

If you want a casual game with more social, face-to-face interaction, I highly recommend 'Dual'. It's available for both Android and iOS and, better yet, is cross-platform!

@Monado_III From experience, I totally understand the way you feel about not being able to afford a gaming platform. It's great to hear that you have so much more to game on!

@Tom Bombadildo

Time is one of the greatest factor that hinders our gaming but when we manage to overcome that challenge, to game for even just a few minutes, it's really a way to demonstrate our dedication to that activity we cherish so much.

Hope you have no problem settling down!

Oh, and stay safe while gaming though! :grog:

Money is another important factor determining our gaming habits/abilities. It determines if a gamer will be able to play MGS V on the PS4 or PS3, wait till the next generation to be able to afford to play games he/she has been dreaming to play or if he should spend so much on a retro game/console that he/she holds much sentimental attachment to. In this context, hackers are, to many, modern-day Robin Hoods.

@cracker Your relationship had a heavy impact on your gaming habits, which is perfectly normal. If you want to rekindle the gamer in you, I might suggest introducing your partner to video games and rediscover the pleasure in gaming. :)

@Blaze163 As we grow older, we shape our gaming habits accordingly. Ultimately, most of us are never the same gamer but it does show that gaming is an inclusive part of our lives.

@Crystal the Glaceon There is a huge prejudice towards people who are so called 'casual gamers'. But it is those 'casual games' that introduced the gaming world to the majority of people. In so doing, they got an idea of how games are and work in general and were able to better understand gamers, breaking many stereotypes like gamers are anti-socials or games are violent.

At the end of the day, we play video games, and we are gamers. We are a diverse community and we should be proud of it.

@LittleFlame Nice! Make the most of it! Those free time will become a rare thing in the future, so game as much as you can and enjoy it!

@Xuman Completing a game before going on to another is actually quite important. In my younger gamer days, I would play a game for like a week and then go on to another. In this way I accumulated a ton of games that I have yet to beat. I deem developing that principle in your gaming habits as fundamental in enjoying each game at its fullest and the way it was meant to be played.

@Bortz Sorry, I'm not the artist but drawing is actually a hobby of mine and I could reproduce it and sign it for you! :yay:

Please read my replies to other comments, I have shared my opinions on some of you habits there.

Happy gaming! :)

Let me clear up what I meant. I wasn't mocking nor intending to insult anyone, I just don't like smartphone gaming. I've tried it, I enjoyed some games like Puzzle and Dragons, but overall, wasn't much to write home about. I do enjoy knowing some games like GTA 3/VC/SA can be played on my phone and on the go though, but really that's a port, so I am not calling it. Basically what I am getting it, is that though there is a market, there's not been enough to keep me interested in that market.
I have nothing against casual games, it's their cup of tea and sometimes I enjoy "casual games," myself. I just enjoy gaming, but mostly lean towards handheld systems these days due to lack of time.
I edited my post to reflect this and make it less crude.

It is kind of funny. She enjoys spectating while people game but she doesn't game herself. I will be trying to ease her into retro gaming in our free time. ;)

You and me both. I'm going to be 22 soon and all I do is work and browse GBATemp and Reddit, so I forget to play games.

EDIT: Maybe I should reply to the OP though. lmao Uhm, when I actually game, I actually wall mounted my TV on the other side of my bed with my 3 current gen consoles. So I just lay in bed and play. It makes a perfect "Netflix and chill" spot! ;) Plus I play on my PC on the other side of my room. God knows how I'm going to set up when I get my own place. :creep: Parents don't want me to get an apartment because it makes saving money for a house much easier, which I totally agree on!

lol i'm 20 and I feel old.
It was the exact opposite to me. I had to get away from my parents if I wanted to save my money.

the downside, though, is that you're stuck with your parents. How much value do you place on privacy?
