Thanks to some shenanigans I got a N3DS almost for free (I only had to say goodbye to my MTG cards ;O; ) and I feel like I am experiencing a downgrade with some stuff:

- The shell feels super-cheap
- The audio feels weaker
- The second "analog" is a joke
- No wireless button
- The stylus keeps screaming "CHEEEEEEAP!"

I was considering to return it and use the store credit to buy junk food and a Japanese body cushion until I tried the 3D... Wow. I can finally play every 3D game in 3D without losing the effect everytime I press a button (try playing Smash with the 3D on on an old 3DS, seriously). I forgot how gorgeous the games look in 3D. I am impressed.

Also mad.

It took you four years to realize "hey, let's track the eyes of the player so they won't lose the 3D effect!"? I feel like the 3D would've been the next greatest thing if this super 3D thing were implemented on day-one.

So yeah, I am keeping this thing for the 3D effect alone. I'm gonna miss everything else, but hopefully I can get used to it. The menu also feels a lot faster, so that's a plus too I suppose.

By the way, do we have third party faceplates yet?

:rofl2: At least you got your N3DS for cheap! You got what you paid for:rolleyes:

For those of us who paid retail price or marked up price for exploitable N3DS though ...

I just remember, that N3DSXL (in US?!) sells charger separately. Talking about greedy Nintendo

No thanks, I already have a PSP Go and I have enough dead Sony consoles as it is now.

N3DS feels fantastic. You're high.

I kinda wanna get a regular-sized N3DS for the faceplates and the smaller sizing, although I like the larger screens of the XL versions. I'm really torn between getting one imported and region-changed or getting an XL here and not being able to use faceplates.

Getting one imported is going to cost a lot if you want to region change it. Imported Cubic Ninja is really expensive ($70+), plus you need the secureinfo_a from an old 3ds that can't get internet again (I may be wrong on that), and the imported 3DS will never have eShop access. Plus the region change process is convoluted and a lot can go wrong. Also have fun finding an N3DS on the proper firmware. It's much easier just to get an XL.

omg are you joking? i moved from an original 3DS to a 3DS XL to a N3DS

the original 3DS was cheap and plasticky and looked like a freakin ice cream sandwich. the XL was a nice build quality but the N3DS? its flipping gorgeous

also the c stick, i can see where you're coming from, it's awkward as hell but gosh my biggest complaint was playing smash without a second stick and this is so much better than not having one at all

Gotta agree with the others here, I upgraded from the original launch 3DS (which I still use as well, cause I got a capture card for it) to the Majora's Mask New 3DS XL. New one feels WAY better and much more solid than the old one. For crying out loud, the touch screen on the original 3DS even moves around when you apply force sometimes. The button layout is also better, no annoying weird start and select buttons, and no dangerously placed power button. Just realized after writing this that you have the standard N3DS..can't speak for that, but I really can't imagine it being worse than the original 3DS (not that I consider the original bad)

they did this on europe with the 3ds XL
i had to pay 15 euros for a damn charger, fuck them

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

My US XL (O3DS) looks/feels 'cheap' compared to the original 3DS..
i had a DS LITE, when i first got a 3dsxl, i could feel the cheepyness and easily to break it...
just the paint outside its take too little to scratch it\remove the paint
i got the hinge "stick" all scratched in the middle, and i don't know how it did that..
the plastic is slimmer compared to the ds lite which looks kinda durable, but not as durable and "military grade" as a original Game boy\ color
the 3ds xl feels like if i drop it, it's gone for good...
even if i throw it to bed i get a bit scared that it breaks...
the hinge "loose point", people say it is for prevent screen cracks or whatever, its really annoying specially with motion controlls or when you are laying down.. the top screen moves like flappy bird

My old 3DS felt heavier and of a better build quality though. The screen wabbled around, yeah, and that's one of the things I like about the N3DS. I can't help but feel the build materials feel less sturdy than my old 3DS.

Also I can't use the c thing (it's anything but a stick lol) for Smash. It feels so...weird.

That's why I have an usb charging cable :P it cost less than $2. I should grab more.

As someone who switched from an o3ds xl to a n3ds xl, I agree with OP. They stylus is poorly placed, cheaper quality, and more difficult to remove. Lack of a wireless button sucks. Microsd under the shell is the worst!!!! The shell is cheap, but so was the o3ds xl shell so I'll give them a pass on that one. I like the second analog and extra triggers though. 3D kills all older version too. Overall, if you use 3d or are on an original 3ds it's a worthy upgrade but don't hold out hope for build quality.

My N3DS makes me sad too.

Out of the box it had one dead pixel (which had multiplied to two dead pixels after the first week of ownership)

The bezel has lifted from the touchscreen and bright backlight shines through it. That was also out of the box.

Now its lifted in more spots now. I've only owned it for a few months, i doubt this thing is going to last me a year!

I have all models of the 3ds family and this is how it goes in terms of build quality:
N3DS > N3DSXL > 3DS > 3DSXL > 2DS
And as a collection, I would put the workmanship at about twice as good as the flimsy DS line. (mad respect to the phat tho)
