PS1/2 playing ps1 games on ps2 using usb without emulator

Hello I have a ps2 (scph 30001 and scph 50001) aldo a ps2 memory card with freemcboot.

is there any way I can play ps1 backupgames on my ps2 using a USB OR HDD without using an emulator. Basically, rplaying like if i was just putting a ps1 game cd on the ps2.

In case i can not. I also have a ps1 console. Is there any way i can run backup games from usb or hdd on ps1.

No. Simple as.

When you put a PS1 game in the PS2 and it loads, it kind of 'switches modes' to a ps1 mode. PS1 backups do not work on a modded ps2, at all. Either use the emulator for backups, or use a chipped PS1, like I do.

PS1's don't have a usb port or have any access to a hard drive - they predate that kind of technology. There are no softmods either. So either chip it or use an emulator.

So basically, when it switches modes, the PS2 turns into a PS1, software wise. Right? That should explain why loading backups from a usb doesn't work, as usb ports never existed in the PS1.

Exactly. If it was simply an expansion of the software, running on the same OS, a hacker would've been able to do it years ago.

Pretty much. Much like the Vwii mode on a Wii U.

As I said, I just use a chipped PS1, surprisingly still easy to get as you can't really play backup ps1 games any other way.

I think you can on a Cfw PS3, but then you need swapmagic, and you need to do it twice and all that crap and it's too much effort for just one go on Crash bandicoot.

1)I heard about psxlauncher.elf, and I understood that you can play a copy of a original ps1 games doing the "swap" and the original game. BY using the same idea it wont be possible to play from a USB ps1 backup games.


2)Finally, last question what is the benefit of do the PSXLAUNCHER.ELF

psdata: Just in my opinion there is not the same feeling when you use the consola vs play using an emulator (if i/m going to use an emulator I will just play it from the PC)

The PS1 side of a PS3 is completely emulated, I think. But I only have OFW, so I don't really know. My firmware is too current to flash with a custom. And I don't have the tools to flash it back.

If you have the money you could go with PSTV as PS1 games work perfectly (from personal experience) and best of all, the device is tiny so you can take it anywhere.

Yeah, by buying PS1 games or streaming them. OR are you talking about usb?

We're talking about playing ps1 games through... non legal means mostly.

You can, but you need to repeatedly swap it, more than just the once, so that the PS2 doesn't get wise to it during the loading process. It's a lot of work just to play spyro the dragon.

Ah, then doing the swap trick on a regular ps2 isn't worth it and Slim is worth it.

Just get a PSTV with 3.20, Superbike 2 (or Tekken 2) and bam! Although you'll need to install them through the PSP Mode first (always comes handy for lots of games so it's a win-win).

I didn't double dip to play the PSP games I already own so I certainly wouldn't do so for PS1 titles either.

Hmm, I may consider that myself - PS TVs are going for about £40 here in the UK so I might pick up one, providing they do indeed ship with the older firmware.

Could be a nice way to play some emulators on my Bedroom Television too.

The PSTVs in the wild seem to all have around 3.20 so it's a good sign. I got mine from CeX and despite the box being in somewhat of a bad shape everything inside was as new.

You can play burned games easy on PS1, via cheap modchip, Action Replay for the back of the console or Xplorer 9000 cheat disc.
Some people also used a hotswap method, but I don't like that.

HDD/SD PS1 ISO Loader via special modchip http://ps-io.com/ will be buyable soon, afaik. Seems like what you are searching for. I think i will try it in the future. not sure if it can put my PAL PS1 into NTSC...

compatibility for that seems to be not really perfect but many games are working fine (see the compatibility thread http://psx-scene.com/forums/f292/ps2psxe-compatibility-game-list-105342/)
POPS Emulator for the PS2 (POPS-00001) is similar. seems to be a official Sony PS1 emulator for PS2, never tried it. you can find compatibility lists via google.
burned disc on ps1 or iso on cfw ps3 seems to be the easiest way on a console. there are people that can flash your ps3 even on a newer ofw for relatively less money...

This is all using burned discs, not USB.

You can play PSX backups on older PS2's using a disc based PSX GameShark (or Action Replay, depending on the country) to do a disc swap. Later versions block GameShark, so...

You can play on later PS2's using ulaunchelf and an original PSX disc to do a disc swap. For some reason this doesn't work on older PS2's.

Of course, on pre-slims you need a way to get at the disc to swap it, either a slidetool, a fliptop case mod, or a solder free eject button mod. On slims you need a way to hold the lid sensor down.


The GameShark method, you just wait for the Gameshark to load, then either choose your codes or don't (up to you if you want to use codes), then swap the discs (the disc spins down so this is safe) using whatever method you have to change discs without the system knowing you ejected the disc. Then you just tell the Gameshark to start the game (with or without codes, doesn't matter).

I use the solder free switch mod, but any method should work. I use the Gameshark disc for PSX games that came as a free bonus with the PS2 Gameshark, but I don't see why Gameshark Lite or other disc based Gamesharks wouldn't work. Obviously the hardware based Gamesharks won't work because there's no parallel port on the PS2. It has to be a disc for PSX games, though, that's important, if you use a Gameshark disc for PS2 games it won't work.



The ulaunchelf method, get into ulaunch elf however you want (you can get in there from FreeMCboot or on a 90000 series slim using a FreeMCboot card and a Swap Magic 3 disc -- it won't launch FreeMCboot but will start up ulaunchelf.) Then put in an original PSX game, only make sure you DO trip the sensor so it reads the disc change (if you used Swap Magic) or just that you've put in a disc at all. After it stops spinning, take out the original disc and put in a backup disc, this time you must NOT trip the sensor. Tell ulaunchelf to load the disc.


These are the methods that work for me repectively to play PSX backup discs on my 30000 (v4) PS2 and90000 PS2 slim.

On a CFW PS3 you rip them to the hard drive and load the iso in multiman.
