I have two fat PS3's. The CECHPxx model is pretty intact. It's missing a harddrive, and the HDD caddy, but other than that it's complete. The CECHAxx model is gutted pretty bad though. It's missing the BluRay drive, as well as the Memory Card Reader, and the Wifi adapter.

What I'd like to do is create a frankenstein unit using bits of both, with the CECHA's mobo being the brain. I'm aware that the CECHP's bluray drive is married to it's motherboard, but I read somewhere that once you downgrade the firmware (on your mobo of choice) that there are ways to use an unmarried bluray drive.

What I would eventually like to have is a PS3 that's backwards compatible with PS2 games.

If I were to use the bluray drive from my CECHPxx model on my CECHAxx model would the console still boot without the MC Reader, or the Wifi adapter?

I also heard that there might be a way to play PS2 games on a non-backwards compatible PS3. I don't know if any of this is true though.

There's a lot I don't know and if any of you guys could clarify things for me that would be awesome.

I'm not 100%, but what your asking isn't possible. Reason being that the blu-ray drives inside the CECHA are dual lasers (allowing it to read PS2 discs) where the CECHP's is a standard single laser drive (not to mention the whole PATA/SATA thing)

Would it boot? Perhaps. Could you play PS2 games on it? Nope.

Depending on your setup and CFW, you can use PS2 Classics and some PS2 ISO's on non-bc models. It's not 100%, but it's a lot easier than trying to fuss with it.

See, I didn't even know that was a thing.

I have a slim that I use for my gaming and thought it would be nice to have a backwards compatible PS3. Seeing as how I got the two fats for cheap (actually got the CECHP for free) I figured I'd try to do something with them.
