I originally bought a gateway flashcard for my 3ds under the assumption that Gateway's latest update supported 3ds firmware up to 9.8, but i didn't pay attention(or understand, rather) completely,

"Today we present GATEWAY ULTRA 3.2.2!This is just a quick update for Old 3DS Emunand, bringing support for the latest 9.8 system firmware."

So i went ahead and sold my old 3ds, and i'm looking to purchase a new one, but is there a guaranteed method to know I'm purchasing one with the correct firmware? and is it possible to use gateway reliably on the New 3ds? I am also a little confused by the exploit methods. Some people mention a browser method to use gateway(or simply boot it up the first time, i'm not sure if it must be done every single time), a method involving a copy of cubic ninja or OOT (which, once again, I'm not sure if it's a one time deal or if it must be completed every single time), and i've also heard of another method where you hold the left trigger while you access the user settings.I was also curious about the use of the memory card for the 3ds, as opposed to the one that goes directly into the gateway card. I know this is just a plethora of questions, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just go to game stop and ask to test n3ds's until you find one with 9.2 or lower.

Exploits must be done everytime.

O3ds 4.1 - 4.5 uses mset which is installed with the blue card. Can launch gateway launcher by going to ds profile settings in the system settings app.

O3ds 9.0 - 9.2 can use the web browser. Go to go.gateway-3ds.com with launcher in root of sd.

N3ds 9.2 and below requires a copy of cubic ninja or zelda oot and the required save data.

Also, download the gateway manual from their site for how to set up emuNAND, dump roms, and how to use GW.

Edit, what you read is that gateway's emunand can be updated to 9.8, which is a copy of your 3ds system (essentially), that runs from the sd card to allow features and eshop access required by higher fw, without actually updating your system.

You need a firmware of 9.2 or below to use the exploit. It's a little tricky making sure the N3DS you get has firmware 9.2 or lower, because I think every color can potentially come with version >9.2. I think there's a way to check the serial numbers, but
you'll have to ask someone else about that. You need OoT or Cubic Ninja just once, and then you can install an exploit that will work without any cards. Be careful with OoT though, because last I heard some later versions of the game didn't properly boot the exploit. About the memory card, the one that goes into the Gateway card is ONLY for 3DS roms. Everything else, the exploit, the emuNAND, save files, the normal Nintendo files, music, pictures, all goes on the SD card inside the N3DS.

Is the cubic ninja or zelda oot save data readily available, or will I have to rely on the graces of a forum member?

So even with the New 3ds, you only have to use the cubic ninja or OOT once? and then how do you boot regularly?

You need to use it once, then once you've used it you can install the old system settings, then you can use mset.

After you use the Cubic Ninja or OoT to load the Gateway Menu, you select NVRAM INSTALL and it will install the 4.5 version of something or other on your system NAND. Basically it will open up the vulnerability that was patched out after 4.5. From there, you use the blue card that comes with Gateway 3DS to install the DS mode exploit. Then, every time you want to boot emuNAND, you just go to system settings, click other settings, and click DS profile and you will boot emuNAND.

That's close but incorrect. You need to install the bluecardfix and the mset.cia.

The NVRAM menu option does the same thing as using the blue card and you don't need to use the NVRAM menu option at all. It's only there because originally, Gateway didn't have the bluecardfix yet and when they added the bluecardfix, they didn't bother taking it out even though you no longer need it.

So I could theoretically buy cubic ninja and return it as soon as I'm done with it?

and are there any compatability issues with using the N3ds in an older firmware state?

Iirc you can get everything you need from gateway's download page. If you do get cubic ninja, I wouldn't resell. It's one of the only card enabling games and the only homebrew enabling game. The prices for it have flutuated hard with releases of different cfw's and exploits. Besides, you may need it again and will only be harder to find.

Definitely do not sell cubic ninja. It has a vulnerability that basically opens up firmware 9.2 to anything in a devs imagination! In all honesty a 3DS game doesn't take up that much room in a drawer :)

Every copy is so expensive! I managed to find one in a physical gamestop about 50 miles way for $15. Better than shelling out $50

I'd call them and have them hold it. It's really hard to find. I got mine when Ninjhax was released. Dude at gamestop said it was the last copy in their region. At the time it was on ebay for up towards 100 bucks US.

Good call. How does inflation like this occur? Did the company stop production of the game?

I think production stopped before any exploits were released, so copies were limited anyway. After ninjhax it was pulled from the eshop, so physical copies were all that was available. People started buying them up.

Quickie update:

I purchased a N3ds xl and the seller told me it was unopened and it matched the serial list for firmware 9.0.0. So I'm assuming he lied to me. I think I'm going to go with a sky3ds and find someone to sell my gateway to. You guys have been so great! honestly, thank you all for the help @WeedZ1985 @Jao Chu @Jiro2 @Deboog @rotebrotobias

Assuming you paid with PayPal, I would put in a item not as described claim, and return it. It is a real shame to not use Gateway if you can. Better to buy a second-hand new 3DS so the seller can open System Settings and actually check for you.

Why are you getting a Sky3DS and selling your Gateway? You don't need the cubic ninja cartridge everytime you launch Gateway, but i understand if you only want NINJHAX and free roms and not homebrew and everything else. You can still use Pasta-CFW with the Cubic Ninja cartridge if you still want homebrew.

It was becoming increasingly difficult to find a N3ds with the proper firmware. The sky3ds seemed to be a more direct solution imo. I couldn't remain faithful to the church of Gateway:bow:
