I only just learned today that the wifi servers for Nintendo were shut down last year.

I have VBA Link working so that I can host it myself, so that I can at least trade and battle friends of my choice on the GBA games over the internet as long as they enter my IP address to connect.

I know that it is obviously impossible to connect to the DS servers, but is there really method of hosting or connecting with just one person of your choice, over the internet, using DESMUME, in a similar way to how I can do it with VBA Link?

Thanks very much.

I can't seem to find one right now.
My school's internet is also being weird and I'm having issues looking stuff up, so I'll look when I get home.

no current DS emulator supports wifi. (no trading or battle even on the same pc,)
wifi is not developed yet.
however, there is an old version of desmume that had wifi support.. but it was a try and miss.. either it worked for you or it didn.t.. me and my friends never were able to make it work..

You can try wiimmfi. DS games are supported on it now.

I've only ever seen people with Windows XP make it work.
there was even a thread about how to play pokemon using communications (wifi) but not on gbatemp.
it had a big list of troubleshooting like firewall, ports, etc..
but even if it works, nowadays you can get a DS pretty cheap, using real hardware and play with friends...
i bought mine for 40 bucks 2 years ago IIRC cheap ass r4 for normal ds less than 10..

but yeah, i know people rather not spending money at all..

anyway, the version of that desmume IIRC is 0.97 wifi
just search on google desmume wifi

You can try wiimmfi. DS games are supported on it now.
he wants to play on emulator, it doesn't matter ninendo servers being shutdown.. since wifi is not implemented on emulators

I am a she but thanks :)

DESMUME 0.9.6 Wifi version used to work for me. But all tutorials now say "SINCE MAY 2014 this will not work after nintendo servers shut down"

I am not asking to connect to the nintendo servers but just to host my own in the same way as you can do with VBA Link, so that me and another friend using DESMUME on a different computer can connect to me over the internet.

The reason I cannot buy a console is because I suffer from a disability that makes it very difficult for me to use hand held consoles and things like mobile phones etc. I have a specially adapted computer set up and so this is the easiest way for me to play. I don't use any cheats though because I want the experience to remain authentic. :)

Aw, man, disabilities suck. Any kind of disability, really.

i do not remember how they worked.. but if they could be used for DS to DS communications, (wihtout using pal pad or pal codes) you don't need WFC...
but i am not sure how that worked, sadly my current pc doesn't have a wifi adapter i can't test it propertly.. but i will give it a try and give feedback,,

but my guess is, if you can manage to put the emulator wifi to work. and it only works through WFC you probably could use the fake\emulated servers as well..
to use the wiimmfi you just need to redirect the DNS (on the game options) so if the wifi on the emulator part works, there should be no issue with the emulated..

as for a real ds.. probably you would be stuck with the small screens..you could use a DSI XL as well... but for an alternate screen (like a tv one or pc) you would need to use a capture card or something like that, which is expensive and complicated...

but the buttons could be easily adapted using an arduino (or even a couple of wires soldered to the board) i seen a arduino connected to a 3ds, fishing for shinie pokemon, that can be easily done on the ds (or dsi) (therefore using a gamepad adapted for you, or even using the pc itself) the people who adapted your computer, should be able to do this as well.. is not hard..
but you would still need to look at the dsi small screen :( if someone can't find a solution to redirect the video...

btw, you can use online battle simulators like this one: http://play.pokemonshowdown.com/
there is a downloadable version i never tested, i usually just go with the browser one
if you want more info about the pokemon slowdown, just ask, i will happily to answer how does it work

Thank you for your posts :) I will certainly check all this stuff out, I really appreciate it. I don't know much about how the real consoles work actually.

If I understand correctly, there is no way to connect two real ds together unless you hold them close together? You cannot do it by connecting to your own router or anything?

Um, hm... I haven't used infrared communication in a while, but I think you can have them quite a ways away from each other.

there is the adhoc mode, which is having 2 consoles..
and there is WFC. which you can play via internet for battle\trade with friends.
however as you know nintendo closed the servers so. WFC is closed.
there is a fake WFC which you can use which we already spoke on this thread: wiimmfi
however, i am not sure if you can use a real game (i read someplace it needed to be patched)
which you will require a flashcart..

anywho, you made a previous post saying you were to get a flashcart.. and wanted transfer pokemons for a real DS,
remember this thread? https://gbatemp.net/threads/transfer-pokemon-save-file-between-emulator-rom-and-real-console.384234/
which made me confused when you said you can't use consoles... i was also the guy who helped you

infrared is only "half needed" on the 5gen games. the infrared is only for "handshake" all comunications are still via WIFI, the IR thing is just for start a battle\trade..
after that handshake you can move the ds far away. the IR is not used...
i think its just a stupid security\anti cheat\drm, whatever reason.. it probably is a ancient protection for the ancient streetpass thing.. so kids to dont trade whit random strangers
but you don't really require it. you can use the pokemon center rooms for trade and battle which don't require IR..

Yes, I did not explain myself fully on the previous post because I hate having to explain how my disability works, it is partly physical and partly mental. I do aim to buy a DS, I have had one in the past, and I asked this because I have some friends that refuse to use an emulator to play pokemon, so I was wanting to transfer my pokemon onto real console if I get one, to battle with them. I can use consoles for limited periods of time just not all the time.

i understand.. if you wanna talk more privately or about something sensitive or explain you can send me a pm, i will be glad to chat.. for whatever reason.

well, i already answererd you can use your emulator save on the a real cart or even flashcart.
i recomend you to get a flashcart. that way you will not need to change games carts phisically... (you put it once on the ds and then you can play any game you want)
which is a great thing.. a flashcart will have no problems (if you get a good one) you will have no problems transfering pokemon, or playing via wifi..
however, for gba games is more complicated... but i can help you edit a save so you can put the pokemons yous had on gba roms, into DS games (either flashcart or real card)

if you get the flashcart and the ds, you can even send me the saves and i will make them ready for you

and if you have a hard time holding a ds, you can ask someone to mod it and make some kind of "holder" and put some wires on the board so you can use a controller that you can use more easily..
if the screen is small, get a DSI XL, the problem is being heavyer... but also can be made some kind of holding tool and can as well easily make some kind of controller..

PS: do not think i am offering to help you because your disability, if you search some of my previous posts i have some kind of history to make stuff ready so people can just enjoy without hassles >:C

Thank you so much, you are very kind, I will buy a flash card soon, at the moment I am moving house, and it could take a very long time until I have a new address to get stuff posted to. I will also buy a DS, probably at the end of this year. I appreciate your suggestions about modifying the DS, but I am ok using it for short periods of time just to battle and trade with those of my friends who do not want to use an emulator, I put it on my bed and then I do not need to hold it. And no I don't think that is the reason why you are helping, I can tell you are a helpful person anyway, and I appreciate the help :)

Can you explain how this works? I want to be able to play against a real player to test out my team. I use the emulator OpenEmu which I think uses Desmume specifically for its DS emulator .

@K3Nv2 Snow Day is pretty fun. My only bitch would be the camera controls, when you move around, say down, you have to move the right stick left or right to get camera to turn and get your view, other than that I like it so far.

I just been playing offline, and they give you a few bots here n there on your team to help battle. I don't think it's as funny as the other games tho, more battle oriented than humor, which kinda sucks, but I'm still early in it

@BigOnYa, doesnt the game have a campaign mode?
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea, and co-op, but you can also start a pvp session and battle just with friends. You get special skill cards (powers) the more you play. And higher value cards, but you can only enable so many cards at a time.
