Hi, I have just bought a 3ds on firmware: 4.5.0-6E. I want to get a card for my daughter but have no idea if the firmware will allow me to get one that will work and which card is the one to get. I will be buying the latest Pokemon for her to play but would like to get a card for other stuff. I have looked around but hope someone can clarify where I stand right now then I can go from there. Also If I have good firmware how do I stop it updating the firmware or her doing it somehow. Help appreciated thanks.
Well the best card you can get in that firmware range is a Gateway 3ds but since its for your daughter I would update the 3ds and buy a sky3ds card. How old is your daughter btw?and is she slightly tech savvy as most kids this generation are?
Thanks for the quick reply. I was worried that if I updated the firmware it would go to the latest and I would not be able to get a card at all. She is 6 but I found she reads everything on Pokemon on her old dsi so have upgraded her to play the latest games helps with her reading a bit.

Well if you can setup the gateway card for her and leave it in Gateway mode all she will have to do his hit the select button and pick a game from the menu pretty sure a six year old can manage that much (gateway is the best card atm and lets you run homebrew among many other things) but don't update the 3ds as you need it to be 9.2 or lower.
Sky3ds is a nice simple card for a child with some minor downsides like the possibility of an online ban if you can't rip a private header from a game. The card is pretty simple to use, you pop it in and press the button on top of it to shuffle through games. though to be honest I still say get a gateway card if at any point a 3ds update comes out that blocks the sky3ds you will lose online functions as gateway can't really be blocked because of an emulated nand (lets you run the latest firmware to have online access).
Thank you Xenon. I have been looking at the gateway card will have to read up on it more as it seems you need a legit game to hack it with. I am good with computers and she will follow instructions so should all be good I wouldn't want get banned online so gateway hopefully for me. Really appreciate your help the old dsi with an r4 card seemed so much easier.
No since you have the older 3DS the gateway card does not need any extra games or hardware, cubic ninja or Zelda is only needed if your using a *New*3DS XL
The gateway setup is very simple on the older 3DS models it should take no more than 15 minutes to setup using the manuals found on the gateway website.

Flashcarts are the price of a couple of games. Just saying.......
Maybe you should have got a DSi or DS lite, the flashcarts are cheaper for those consoles.
If I may add that you can get a legit pre-installed version of the latest Pokemon game using gateway, unless your kid absolutely can't wait, in that case, ignore this post. 
not if you want to use the gateway bluecard. (unless you use flashcard timewarp, but .cia's is taking it to the next level... dangerous stuff.)
You will lose access to the easier entry point, but you can regain it through downgrading.
With 4.5, you will be able to use the blue card to play DS games, and can access Gateway Mode (emuNand, using 3DS games on the flash card, playing games installed via CIAs) through System Settings > Profile > Nintendo DS Profile, which will then reboot into the Launcher.
With 9.0-9.2, you will have to use the browser exploit, which involves opening the browser and going to a specific webpage, which then reboots into the Launcher. (There is an Android app that hosts the webpage, I believe, so you can connect to your phone rather than relying on an outside server.)
If you update past 4.5 but not past 9.2, you can downgrade back to 4.x. However, if you're buying a legitimate Pokemon card, then your options to play it will be to either not downgrade (so it can be played in sysNand), or to use Classic Mode each time you want to play it (which means rebooting the system and re-entering the Launcher each time you want to switch between Gateway Mode and Classic Mode).
Another option you'd have is that you can also use the Launcher to dump your physical game, and put the resulting .3ds onto the Gateway card and run it that way. Since you'll have copied your own card, it would have its own unique private header, and you wouldn't have to worry about being banned.
I've glossed over some things, since I'm not sure how much reading you've already done, and so I'm not sure how much you understand about how the process works. I'd be happy to go into more detail on anything you like, though. (I've actually been thinking about trying to put together some sort of graphical guide to help explain things to people coming in for the first time, but I'm out of town visiting family, so I haven't really had free time for the most part.)
