I had Sonic adventure on my dreamcast, it was not good and as far as I was aware it was a universally held opinion. The sequel was not cause to revise my opinion either. In both cases it controlled poorly (not even "not like sonic"* but generally poorly), the story (such that it wasn't) was abysmal even by computer game standards of the day, the gameplay if the controls hadn't sunk it did not any better thanks to poor levels, broken gameplay flow and various other things that usually mark a bad game. This all combines such that I am not sure there was even a kernel of a good idea in there.

*I had basically every master system and megadrive sonic, and had played the game gear entries as well. I even enjoyed sonic 3d.

In recent years I have encountered those which hold that it was not only not a bad game but actually a good one. I find this turn of opinion to be incredibly jarring.

There have been occasions where I have warmed to games long after my initial play through, not many and most of the times I have tried it (Phantasy Star 3, afraid not. Chrono Trigger, not sure why I should consider it relevant post 32 bit era. Monster hunter, still good on paper but boring in practice) it has not worked.
I have no cause to doubt myself but I do have to try these things.

To that end what is the definitive version of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. Original games, fan hacks of them (not that there seems to be that many), controller adapters (the dreamcast controller is not an all time great, the gamecube one is Nintendo's best but that is not high praise) and whatever else I might need to consider.
I do not care about the minigames and as long as the graphics work I do not much care there either. Speaking of broken gameplay flow I am also up for mix and match play -- if I can ignore episodes/seasons of a show then I see no reason why I can not do something similar for games (I will probably seek a way to cheat my way past the fishing).

my info will be a bit fragmented, because i am trying to remember as i type.

well the first one was designed for the dreamcast (and i guess the second as well), which probably are the best way to play them. and were kinda broken games..
in my experience, sonic games (the 3d ones) always feel like broken games. tehre is always some glitched areas that are an arse to pass.. and glitched loops..

had both adventure dx and 2 on steam version..
i enjoyed them.. the second one IIRC had xinput support which was just plug and play my f710 (xbox alike controller)
however the first one is a pain in the ass for gamepad support... (i remember it was hard to make a gamepad to work, or key layout was bad..)

i would recoomend you to try the steam versions..
i may try the gamecube versions sometimes, but for now i have so many games i already had been playing..

the steam version of adventure 2, it feels really nice... and it even got achievements... also got the battle DLC.. i liked a lot that version

however some fanboys complained about the steam version being a direct port or converted.. because on the main menu map, you can see the map cropped because the dreamcast being a 4:3 low res screen..

my friend bought a dreamcast just to play sonic adventure 2 (when there was no steam version)
he played on using a dreamcast emulator but it sucked...

For Sonic Adventure 1, I recommend the Steam port, since you can use any controller, and there's barely any differences between the 3 versions of that game, unless simple texture changes mean anything to you . For SA2, I prefer the Gamecube one, as I seem to encounter lots of glitches in the Steam version.

My problem with the Steam port is that the aspect ratio is jacked up, as in, worse than 4:3 and very squished, framerate wise, it's perfect, but it felt kinda rushed, Gamecube version feels superior to it in that regard.

Edit: Yeah, it has a hideous confining purple border that you can't get rid of, nice going Sega.

the dreamcast version is actually the best, none of the remakes made any gameplay improvements and made the camera and controls somehow worse if you didn't like it on the dreamcast you'll hate the ports.

Except the Dreamcast version is 30 fps, other ports are 60 fps, so half speed really isn't saying much.

Really, if you didn't like it in the first place, I doubt a replay now will change your opinion. I think it just seems like people suddenly like it because people who grew up with the game are now old enough to voice their opinion on the internet.

Hmm, I found something on the Steam community for that (I think), but when I loaded the app, it told me that I was missing something called CHRMODELS.dll  Game mod failed at failing.

This. While I love the game, I have to say if you didn't like it then you sure will not like it now and that goes for most every game (unless a mod, update or whatever fixes it) and if any thing games get worse due to aging (main reason ocarina of time has no interest to me).

Installed the mod, it works and has 16:9 but aliasing makes it look horrendous, there's no v-sync option and the framerate isn't as smooth :glare: Lame. No FXAA of FSAA options...ugh.
