I know that the gateway will use more power because it has its own cpu inside.
I was wondering will the gateway consume more power if I play a CIA games while leaving the card inside? Will the gateway card be idle while playing CIA games or will it still use some juice?

Once you've booted emunand you can eject the gateway cart, and still play cia games. This saves a lot of juice compared to leaving the cart in.

do people use AAA batteries in there 3ds's lol i always leave my gateway in all the time and i streetpass all day with the gateway still in and that only takes about 1-2 bars in 8 hours

playing from the gateway i get 5 or so hours straight WITH online.
i dont see a reason to worry about the gateway's power consumption.

before gateway, I could just leave my 3ds on overnight w/o losing significant power with a retail cart in
with gateway, I drop a bar or two when I check it in the morning
I guess YMMV, but general consensus is that it 1) does take extra power and 2) can be a hassle for many people depending on them/their usage but honestly you should just be charging it often anyways, especially because you can just leave the lithium battery plugged in all the time

Yeah, I notice barely any difference, if any, with battery life when using gateway cart. 5 hours is my general battery life with max brightness, although i do turn off my wireless

Overnight?? why would you leave ANY system on overnight, its abuse. puts some serious strain in your battery and system
(coming from the guy that turns even my phone off at night) if your not using it dont leave it on. i put all mt systems and phone powered off and charging at night if needed.
and DONT always leave the charger in.

I leave my New 3DS on sleep mode in game 24/7, we'll see if anything happens

So far, leaving the Gateway in all the time, in standby, I only lose one bar of battery on N3DS regular-sized system after 2 days of standby. This is WITHOUT a game loaded in the menu (so cart slot shows empty). I wonder if having a rom loaded up or not makes a difference when the Gateway card is inserted? Have people who have reported high battery usage with Gateway in standby tried pressing Select to bring up the multi-rom menu and then pressing B to unload any game? I wonder if that will help.

1) in sleep mode of course... it's called that for a reason
2) new electronics are designed to be on overnight, hell, there's nothing wrong with leaving your charger in because it's designed to be fine when you leave it plugged in (trickle charging)

When I first got my Gateway, I didn't really think about it until someone mentioned it on the forums. Once I went full on CIA, I realized how much juice the Gateway had been sucking. I rarely have my red card in and I am much more satisfied.

Came here to check if anyone was experiencing the same. Yay! not imagining things! I've been noticing with my N3ds and it was pissing me off. played for half an hour yesterday on a full charge. put it in sleep mode even using the power off button to get it to the grey screen. went to sleep and work, got home and it was turned off. tried turning it on only blinking red lights... that's like Iphone battery life... I'm going to try and unload the rom as suggested.

As Ichii Giki says above, you have two options:
1. Press select and then B to "unload" the game.
2. Eject the gateway card and re-insert it when you are done playing.

By either of these methods, you can go days in sleep mode without having to charge your 3DS. If you leave a ROM loaded, it will use up your battery power faster.

As much as I'm getting fairly experienced with all of this stuff, I'm still quite new to the 3DS scene in general. The question I have, here, is do you still pick up game-specific street passes when carts aren't loaded? I'm assuming yes, since that seems to be how this all works, and I can't imagine the Gateway factor changing things, since it seems to be associated to your profile, but assuming makes an ass of you and me, as the saying goes.

Lol. You must not be an audiophile. My dad is and he and his audiophile buddies insist their equipment sounds like shit unless it has been on for at least two weeks.

As crazy as that sounds there is valid argument with some electronics that the process of turning them Off/on is harder on them than just leaving them on. I will leave that up to the engineers to argue about however.
