Actually it is a bit more flexible, when I was messing with it, I removed my external HDD during some loading screen and the game got stuck but continued once I reconnected the HDD.
I guess the difference is that the Wii U is designed to play games from external storage, so has safeguards to deal with disconnects, unlike the Wii.

i personally thought it would have shut the console off/restarted it. thats what it done when i was on the wii u menu and pulled out the hd

I used to disconnect my hdd from my wii all the time to load files on it while they were playing games and the game would continue just fine. Most notably i did this with animal crossing. The music would stop playing and then continue once i hooked the hdd back up to the wii.

I do hope that with the upcoming release someone finds a way to crack VC title so that they can be displayed in stretched mode or forced 16:9.
(I'm looking at you DK64 -,-)

That is why I haven't bought Mario 64 yet :(
I use Not64 for Mario 64, but for DK64 I had no option.
Although, I think that if you set the aspect ratio of the Wii U to 4:3 the VC image will stretch out, then you will be able to switch on Widescreen in DK64's settings and you will have a beautiful 16:9/Full screen view of Dk64! (That's just theory though)

would a webkit and Kernel exploit combo be enough to dump WII U disk images or would we need ISOU access to do so ?

As has been stated again, again, and again: An IOSU exploit is required to play Wii U disc dumps.

EDIT: Whoops, my bad. I thought you were asking for a backup loader.

We're still looking into it, but why would you want to dump a 23.3GB image when you could extract the files which are usually much less. We can definitely access /vol/content, it might be possible to patch the loader in the same way to access /vol/code, and /vol/meta shouldn't matter since it's just a few images.

Question: What exactly is in the "meta" folder?

Note: I know what's in the other two folders.

Basically just images for the home menu, the load screen and movie, and the manual.

Yea, but not64 is not HD :( 480p on an LCD HD tv looks horrible.

That's one of the main reasons I was interested. Then I saw the black bars which are really really bad :(

Indeed, the black bars are such a let down.
One simple line of code would enable stretching, and DK64 could REALLY benefit from that.
That's why I am looking forward to Wii U Hakcing, to hopefully have a N64 emulator with forced 16:9 aspect ratio and (hopefully) a DS emulator that doesn't look like garbled pixels with some of the hi-res from Desmume implemented.
Still a helluva lot better than the 240p most N64 game had.
In that case, yeah. Much better than the usual 240p :P
