I wasnt going to mention backing up systnand because i formatted right after, but may be relevant

Come to think of it you may be able to recover your NAND image on the fat32 file system if GW doesn't overwrite all sectors with 0's during formatting.

I think it's a lost cause. Sky3ds might not be so bad anyways, seems like Nintendo will never be able to patch it. Plus I wouldnt have to carry Cubic ninja and the Gateway around with me either.

Again, I appreciate everyone's responses and sorry for all the questions and the walls of text. This community is amazing!

Still, I would go ahead and take a raw dump of your SD card with dd and search for NCSD magic to see if NAND header is still intact on the old fat32 file system that was in place before the format.

A tip for you is that AFTER you update emunand do not do anything until you change the theme on emunand. For instance, leave the theme as default on sysnand and then in emunand change it to something else, for example black. This way when going into eshop you will know which is which by a visual.

I was going to say the SAME EXACT THING. I don't have a Gateway, yet, but I was gonna ask isn't there a vibrant theme we can install in Emunand, kinda like a mario or captain toad theme, which would VISUALLY DISTINGUISH whether you're in Emunand or sysnand.

What I intend to do is keep the sysnand completely STOCK, which would be a pretty big que that I have been booted back into sysnand.

I use the cia unwrap repeatedly, that tells me I'm in emunand. Whatever game I want to play I just unwrap it.

But that would suggest your sysnand and emunand are linked, right?

First thing I am going to do is UNLINK sysnand and emunand and DELETE WIFI SETTINGS in sysnand.

Creating a string of folders spelling out S Y S N A N D and E M U N A N D is also a good visual cue.

That will not necessarily keep it from connecting to wifi. Se my post here I just made.

New Gateway 3.1.1 update (with Cubic Ninja support!)

Yes its linked still but I can at least know which is emunand and which is sysnand. You can unlink sysnand by formatting sysnand. and create a separate theme or add folders. Better yet install cia's that aren't installed on sysnand.

Out of all the tutorials I've looked at, I can't recall one that specifically tells you exiting settings returns you to sysnand. It seems like a very important aspect of gw tutorials that only seems to be brought up in gbatemp threads only after someone has already updated their sysnand.

Well if you're not going to follow the guide all the way through than that is where it gets interesting.

I know others said to make folders that spell out which Nand you are in. But I find that very annoying so themes is what I use. On another site you can download all themes which gives you like over 80 or whatever is currently released up to this point. So use one of those on emunand and you should never be mistaken which one you are in.

Do the unlink process of sysnand and emunand. Then in sysnand make 3 fake settings for wifi. Alongside this I put parental controls on to ensure the kids to not update on accident. I put parental controls on both nands.

Yeah it's said in pretty much any guide worth following, step 1 is to backup your NAND and store it in a safe place.....it doesn't matter if you don't think you will make a mistake, I do it and I'm well versed in how to use gateway, it's your only safety net should things go wrong, I know then that even should at some point down the road someone gets hold of my 3ds and runs an update, yeah I will be a bit pissed off at them, but it's not the end of the world, NAND mod and fixed

Moral of this story is making a damn NAND backup is ALWAYS step 1.......ALWAYS......no matter how confident you are :P

That's why I always suggest to people who use gateway to unlink emunand as soon as they can and install a free theme on emunand (black one, for example, or red one, or whatever). Emunand = Black ; Sysnand = Original grey one, easy to spot.

That's way, you can easily spot when you are not on emunand anymore.

i did that along with the folders spelling out emuNAND and sysNAND. im also going to set restrictions on absolutely everything that risks updating, like someone else did

My Wife paid scalpers for the MM3ds because i was such a fan, so im not getting rid of it.

Find a black 3DS and switch the faceplates! Then you and your wife could play at least your legit games together, or use download play. :)

You can't restrict updating. Parental controls does NOT block it. The only thing you can do is never accept the ToS, but this is required to access the e-shop.

I've been reading more and more, finally getting the gist of everything. Another question that I really havent found the answer to, What if I had an old 3dsXL with below firmware 9.2? Could I back up it's Nand and somehow downgrade my N3ds using the old 3dsxl Nand?

I'd also have to use a hard mod if i wanted to do that as well, right?
