Yo. So I recieved the gateway, 32gb microsd, savedongle & microsd reader today.

The hardware I have is New 3ds @ 9.0.0 sysnand

What are things I can prepare for tomorrow/wedn before oot arrives?

I'm going to backup sysnand & get necessary files ready. I'll continue to read up on how formatting & unlinking emunand works and I'll be sure to make sure its on emunand before I do a system update.

Is there anything else I should prepare/have missed as far as prep goes?

Suggestions on specifics to read up on (gateway usage) are very welcome. Cheers !!

!EDIT!
-------------
oot arrived and it worked. So far I've done this successfully:

Backup sysnand place folders+nand on pc
update the gateway cart through menu
formated emunand
Updated EMUnand
Unlinked sys&emunand

Is there anything i've forgotten to do before I add backups to a fresh 32gb microsd and play?

correct me if im wrong but:
gateway mode=emunand & able to play .3ds & .3dz
Classic mode=emunand (9.5 now) & able to play retail carts

Is there a way to enter gateway menu once you've entered gateway mode? (say I want to enter classic mode from gateway mode). Or do I have to do the oot explit over again?

Well you can format emunand on the 32 GB card, but there is a bug with the larger cards right now and GW doesn't show up in front of the version number in system settings. So I would make another one on the 4gb card and have it read if needed. There is a thread on how to move it to a larger card after updating. Emunand Tool might be working now n1ghty thinks it is as of early this morning but I haven't tested it yet. You can always check the emunand tool release and support thread for the latest.

Read the save data mega guide at the top of this sub if you have any retail carts you plan on playing. Also make sure you have. #O screw driver and check to make sure you can connect data management to your PC.

Buy snacks. :)

Well, you need a PH00 screwdriver, to get at the internal mSD. If you want, you can go ahead and copy the Launcher.DAT file to your mSD ahead of time.
If you haven't looked into headers, do so now. If you want your updates ready, you can look into finding .cia files of the updates to install instantly. It is faster than going through the eShop to track down each and every download you need.

Other than that, wait. GW is really straight forward tbh, and imo you need to have it in your hands to truly get the hang of it.

"backup" as many games as you can.

fire emblem cut scenes on the N3DS actually worked in 3D. I loved it.

All 3D play works with SS3D once you fold, then open the 3DS. I agree, FE cut scenes are awesome :3

my personal suggestion, would be to source some clean cia rips to install on sysnand(its easier to do this before you set up emunand etc), remember you can only use ones that match your consoles region, but they are good to have so you have something that you can play without having to boot into gateway mode

nope.....but only for clean leit rips taken from consoles that had pre-installed games, unfortunately US didnt get as many of those as EU, currently there is 6 EU clean rips, 3 US and 1 JPN clean rip
nope
there are like 3 US clean cia rips out in the wild. If you are just looking for some free alternative to GW, there is nothing currently out there that does the job better.
yep i would say the clean rips complement gateway....but they dont replace it XD

if im not mistaken the microsd that goes into the gw cart will hold nothing except for the backups?
launcher.dat, all backups through gw & emunand will land on the microsd in n3ds right?

How much space does the internal microsd really need for emunand? Is it ok to just use the 4GB card that came with the N3DS?

I have a question, and I am pretty new and still learning, and I don't have a Gateway, yet.

I have heard there are advantages to UNLINKING your Emunand and Sysnand.

Which is better and why? UNLINKED or LINKED?

I know for sure that by unlinking EMUNAND AND SYSNAND, you get do whatever in your Emunand and the changes won't reflect in your Sysnand, but that's all I know.

A lot depends on what games you play. Updates to games are stored there. Your saves are there. Photos if any are there. Eshop games. The emunand partition takes up about 2GB. Over time 4GB might get tight, 8 GB gives some breathing room. I use 32GB as they are only $16 for good ones from Amazon and it gives plenty of room for cia installs.

You know one of the big advantages. Another is if you enter data management from sysnand all you installed cia files get deleted. Not fun.

If you get a system update nag in sysnand a simple reformat wipes the update nag.

Some users like them linked but I really have no idea why.

one reason to have them linked is if you have legit eshop stuff installed that you want accessible in both emunand and sysnand without having to have it installed twice.....but mostly its better to have them unlinked
