Hey! So in about two-three weeks its going to be my nephews birthday. Now to be honest, me and my family have been poor the majority of our lives and we've honestly never had much money to spend on extraneous things like video games and such. But i've just recently graduated from college and as of Janurary have gotten a job that pays pretty well, so i decided to get him a more expensive gift. So about a week ago i went out and bought a 2DS for him. Now the thing is that i don't want to place this burden of having to buy video games for the 2DS on his parents (3DS games are freaking 40$ each!) and so a flash card seems like the best way to go. Now $70 is a lot of money to me and so before i buy a flashcard i just want to make sure that it'll work properly/ i'll know how to use it.

1. First off, i just want to confirm that Gateway 3DS can in fact play 3DS Roms/backups on my 2DS.

2. I have a 2DS and so is gateway 3DS the best flashcard to get? Will gateway 3DS function properly with my 2DS?

3. Does anyone have a link or video to the set up process of Gateway with the 2DS?

4. Is there any way to play backups/roms on my 2DS for free? Without a flashcard?

5. What is the best reseller to get Gateway 3DS from? I've seen the resellers list on their website but is there a best one out of theose resellers?

6. Will gateway 3DS work for every 3DS game out so far?

Oh and uhh my 2DS is currently on version 6.0.0 - 12U.

Thanks! Any and all help is appreciated! I'd really like to set up the 2DS/Flashcard for this week, so that i can get it wrapped and ready for his birthday the following week.

1. Yes
2. Gateway is always the best
3. Probably the best one here. I don't normally recommend youtube videos though.
4. Not possible on 2ds. On normal 3ds it's possible but constantly crashes so not user friendly
5. Modchipsdirect is probably best for the US since realhotstuff stopped supplying flashcarts
6. Yes. All games are compatible. Even eshop games work. 100% compatibility

How old is your nephew? Sky3ds might be a better option because it's just plug and play on a 2ds. Gateway is much more user friendly on a 3ds or 3ds xl (ds profile exploit)

He's 8 years old. I was thinking about SKY3ds but i wanted to keep the option of online play open for him just incase he wanted to play online. I also read that once Sky3DS gets patched (if it ever does) the card would be useless, that there is no update or something that you can download to fix it, where as if Gateway gets patched it can be updated. Sorry if i sound kind of ignorant, im not at all a tech type of person and so its been kind of a challenge learning about this stuff.

But thanks a ton for the replies! I really don't want to mess this up!

The main problem with gateway on 2ds is it needs an internet connection to launch (not a big deal). The real problem is it's going to download an update for 9.5+. If he downloads and installs the update then gateway is useless

Nope. You need to launch gateway from the internet browser every time on the 2ds

That's why I said gateway is more user friendly on the 3ds and 3ds xl. You can launch gateway by just pressing the ds profile button in the settings

With sky3ds you just press a button on the sky3ds cartridge and it switches games after about 10 seconds.

Well, if he somehow manages to update sysNAND, then Gateway will be useless, and then if emuNAND gets updated, then your nephew would have to upgrade to a newer launcher.dat, which I am not sure an 8 year old will be able to comprehend. The easiest thing to do is to go with a Sky3DS, as I don't think that it'll be easy to childproof the 2DS so that he can keep the Gateway working. Granted, the Sky3DS is also at risk as well, seeing that a future system update can possibly cause it to be useless, so the safest thing for either flashcart is to not allow him any online access at all.

This is what I was saying. Sky3ds is much better for kids (assuming an adult sets it up on the computer first)

I'd just instruct the kid on how to use the Gateway properly. 8 years old is smart enough to understand the basics and what to do and not to do. And honestly, I rarely need to use the exploit launcher because I never turn my 2DS off.

Yeah I think Gateway would be a better choice for YOU but Sky is definitely the way to go for a kiddo who won't know about launcher.dat, exploits, the dangers of updating, and probably doesn't care about home-brew anyway

Online play is a bit of a concern though. Maybe use the Sky for offline games? And go retail for any game you're desperate to go online with.

Gateway is really easy to use, you just go to settings, then click on other settings>Profile>Nintendo DS Profile. This will boot emunand, and once it boots up, you press select and choose a game. Though this is only for 4.5 3DS. You can downgrade from 9.2, but Im not sure if you yourself want to get technical and get your hands dirty.
So for the simplicity and the compatibility of Sky3DS, I suggest that instead. Because it works on 3DS 9.5 and if your 3DS is on 9.5, then most definitely get a Sky3DS.
If you're on 9.2 or lower, I'd strongly recommend Gateway. Go to settings, and check the firmware. This will determine what flashcard you'll get.

One negative side to sky3ds is the lack of a game selection menu. You have to press the button on the cycle through the games. Gateway has a nice rom selection menu to choose a game. So I guess they both have ups and downs.

Sky3DS: Easy to setup, compatible with all 3DS including the newest firmware. No rom selection menu
Gateway: Can be really complex to setup, only compatible with 3DS on 9.2 or lower, not compatible with New 3DS. But has a rom selection screen which he'll appreciate.

But wow 8 years old? It's gotta be Sky3DS!
Im absolutely sure if you went with Gateway, he'll learn how to boot up emunand then the rom selection menu. It's easy to remember.
Both cards can play online so it's safe to go either way. But Gateway is safer since it can use private headers while Sky3DS can't dump headers.

Nobody mentioned yet that the 2DS could have serious issues using the Gateway. I'm playing on 2DS and when I try to play games from the microSD, it's extremely buggy. It crashes often, sometimes after 5 minutes, sometimes I can play for 15 minutes but it always crashes.

Either you install all games as CIA, or you're better off buying a Sky3DS.

He's talking about a 2DS. They can't be downgraded currently.
