You know is he right, piracy is defined to be unauthorized copies of digital works, not theft. Theft implies that something is stolen and then gone, piracy implies the object is still there, but illegally copied and distributed, big difference. Googled the definition of piracy in the search,

the unauthorized use or reproduction of another's work.
plural noun: piracies
"software piracy"
synonyms: illegal copying, plagiarism, copyright infringement, bootlegging
"software piracy"

Piracy != theft but still illegal

First and foremost, let it be known that I refuse to pirate games that are still being actively sold, are sources of revenue and are still are available in digital form from legit download services (i.e. eShop, PSN, XBN, Steam, Origin, etc) :P I have, however, modded my Wii and backed up every single Wii and Gamecube game that I legally obtained because I find it to be more convenient, people will still frown upon backing up legit copies but I feel fine doing it with my own games.
I think it's a legitimate reason to use backups. The way I see it, there should be a legal way of backing up your legal games, much like it's the case with CD's and iTunes, WMP etc. - it only makes sense to backup your data.

hell man, if i could download a laptop i would. if i could 3d print a functional car i would.

if anything. piracy = counterfeiting there's the big answer.
if there was a way to counterfeit money that was 100% undetectable, and you had 100% no way of getting caught, i'm sure a lot of people would do it. if it was easy of course. as in clicking a couple buttons

Piracy isn't technically theft, and people always try to justfity it by saying that nothing was really "stolen", but that's still a sale which never happened, which could have happened if Gateway and sky3ds didn't exist. So in reality, you never stole any physical product, but you still stole a sale which would have happened if you had just bought the game normally. Not to mention that if EVERYONE pirated, there would be no reasonable way to fund the production of games, it woudln't be economically sound. So you're basically relying on everyone else to buy stuff normally while you ride off of their purchases.

Granted, I've actually had a situation in which I've lost a physical game, now that game resides on my Gateway. I still prefer to support developers though, it's just better that way. I'd also still like to have emuNAND and I'd like for Nintendo to remove their stupid region lock, so that is why I support Gateway in those respects. I'm probably just going to move onto buying physical games and then dumping them + running those dumps instead since it just works better that way. Or with my N3DS I'll just buy stuff in the NA eShop and then dump my ticket.db and download a .cia I can use on my N3DS.

It is not stealing, it is piracy, different crime.
Killing is not stealing.
Rape is not stealing.
Fraud is not stealing.
Usurping is not stealing.
Piracy is also not stealing.
etc... you get the idea.

Why mixing concepts?

Well most people would probably do that, if you could "steal" it in a way that you would have a car and the previous owner wouldn't lose his car either, since piracy is not stealing.

I would totally download a car.

It is not stealing, it is piracy, different crime.

Wrong. It's no more piracy that it is stealing. Piracy is robbery on the high seas. This is just copyright infringement.

I never stated it was directly stealing. When you pirate, nothing is actually stolen. However, developers have still lost a sale which they would have gained provided that there wasn't ways to pirate. Granted, there's also the argument where some people would have never bought it in the first place, so it's not really a sale lost, but there's also the circumstance where they would have bought it, but they were too lazy to do so or whatever.

Then there are games that are neither sold physically or digitally (i.e Super Nintendo, N64, Atari 2600, etc) to which no on benefits outside secondhand sales. Still illegal, yes, but there is no lost revenue on media no longer in print.

If I didn't pirate, I'd probably be out doing something else illegal. Like getting drunk and driving or picking locks to seemingly abandoned buildings.

Then again, I would probably finish writing my book series since I'd have nothing else to do. In some sick way, becoming published means I'd buy games, so by pirating, I'm deigning them future income that would only be possible if I didn't pirate. That's messed up.

I would like to point out that if you buy your stuff legally, in about five to ten years it'll be illegal. Music is classic for this example.

Actually, iTunes only uses DRM for it's on-demand video, AFAIK, both they and Amazon no longer add DRM to their music. Besides, if music had DRM, there are ways around it, of which I cannot divulge. DRM only make legit owners suffer.

There are many reasons why I prefer buying my games these days.

1: Physical games looks good
2: Money for the companies to make more games
3: I dont have to worry about updates and stuff
4: I do afford the games I really want
5: I have found myself to be more invested in games I bougth than games I downloaded for free.

What do I miss? Homebrew maybe. I have a PSP, iPAD and PS3 for that...

A website about piracy, and scene releases, and everything flashcart, and CFW related. Lets sit here, and debate the morality of it all. >.> I laughed for a bit, but by the end of the first page, I just find this whole thread on the painful side. Pirate or not, this site gives a lot of tools to anyone who wants to pirate. Anyone sitting here going on about how wrong it is sounds pretty silly.
