sounds like they have sat on the ability to allow current fw's until someone attempts to snaffle their business..

This new direct boot method seems to be exclusive to 9.x FW, since Sky3DS doesn't work with lower firmware revisions, so even if they were sitting on it, they weren't sitting on it for long. The team behind Gateway has standards, and I for one would prefer a properly tested product, so if they withheld their 9.x update, they must have had a reason to do so, BUT ...

They might have simply taken a look at how their competition does it. After all, finding a vulnerability of this caliber is no simple task, and aside from knowledge and proper equipment, one might need a bit of luck. It's entirely possible Gateway didn't have their own method of running their cartridge on 9.x.

I'm really curious as to how this will work, though. The 4.x exploit lets you put 3DS files on a MicroSD, and you're done. ROM switching is done with software, and Gateway doesn't have a button. Will this require two separate MicroSD cards (one for 4.x and one for 9.x)? Will we be able to switch between games on 9.x, or will it be something similar to Gateway's beginnings, when we had to flash a single game image onto a MicroSD? So many questions!

As for CIA, DevMenu or BBBMenu are nice concepts, but they're impractical to say the least. 3DS to CIA conversion is cumbersome to the point I won't be using it. I tried installing a theme compatible with my region, but it didn't work. Instead, it broke a theme I have bought, and now I can't seem to re-download my legally purchased theme, because the 3DS gives me an error when preparing the SD card (or whatever it is it does - anyone familiar with error code 009-4998).

I have one up-to-date 3DS, so I'm definitely looking forward to this, and I'm planning on getting the New 3DS, so I hope N3DS exclusives will be supported as well.

Little buggy question : Sky3DS = firmwares between 4.5 and 9.2 but GW is for 4.5 and 9.2 but not for 5.x/6.x/7.x or 8.x ?
So not the same exploit ?
I noticed the same thing aswell.

Though it is possible that Gateway's version may work on the "inbetween" versions, but they just didn't have a device to test it on.
Kinda like a "best before" date on food - often its still fit for consumption after that, the producer just can't guarantee their level of quality at that point.

But yes, it does seem like it may be a different method if the Gateway solution really only works for 9.x (and 4.x)

They dont mention having an exploit anywhere in their update. I doubt they have one. They just mention bringing support for higher firmware consoles. It's probably similar to the Sky3ds deal but more features as they seem to be very talented people

Alittle Off Topic but Anyone know what Firmware the New 3DS's come with ?

That's GW : telling you enough to have faith. But not enough to know the whole truth until they release their update :p

Got a 4.5 3DSXL but my brother-in-law was planning to buy a Sky3DS. Just stopped it this evening with a SMS :p
Its that "untill they release their update" that irks me.
Makes me want to just go to bed and sleep and hope they push it out overnight. XD

The suspense... *sigh*
Ah well, Guess I'll just be playing some Valkyria Chronicles and watch youtube 3DS stuff in the meantime...

Yep definitely this, seems like they quickly put the Update out to stop people from buying other Flashcards.

Just to make things clear

It would work on any New 3DS (Jap or PAL) as long as it's running firmware 9-0-9.2 ?

Who's to say that they didn't find a kernel acces exploit and they can get the same kind of deal that 4.x consoles do to work on 9.x

Do you really mean that to run a linker on 9.x Sky3DS have no exploit ?
They do it by magic ? lol
Or I misunderstood your words...

Same for GW.

They don't have an exploit on sky3ds, it emulates a retail cart. Gateway 4.10-4.5 has kernel access via the DS mode exploit.
