Hey guys,

Sorry about this, but I find sometime there is too much jargon on the forum and I have to really hunt to figure things out.

What exactly does the 2.6 update mean for a regular user? Why are .cia files so important? I read some comment about dlc but how does that work exactly and why does it even work (from a technical perspective)?

Thanks!

CIA files are the format the 3DS uses to install digital content. That means all your VC games or 3DS games that download from the eshop are downloaded and installed in CIA format. This includes DLC. There's an application known as "devmenu" that comes preinstalled on 3DS developer units. This application can install CIA files; this function was obviously intended for developers. Gateway 2.6 allows the installation of said devmenu (downloaded through a scene release online) and therefore allows you to load up your 3DS with all the pirated digital content you can find online.

In a nutshell, and being very, very simplistic, it means you can install files DIRECTLY into your 3DS. So no need for any cards or anything. You just turn it on and the games are there on your menu. Also, DLC.

No, Gateway mode only stays until you power off or reset back to sysNAND. So if you can keep your 3DS powered on forever, you've got a perfect Gateway-free solution :D

Thanks guys that was extremely helpful. I wish we did this more often, there should be a thread just to break stuff down in layman's terms.

If I have a rom of XXX game, can I make a .cia file from it?

If I have YYY DLC, can I somehow dump it and make a .cia file from it?

if I have ZZZ patch, can I dump it and make a .cia from it?

Gateway will now let you load any of the .csu files from the SDK leak renamed to .3ds from the Gateway Menu via microsd

Does this mean you can download and install software updates for other region 3DS games?

It does ALOT.

1. Right now we are just seeing ROMS being installed directly into the home menu dashboard.
2. People are just now seeing they can use this for savegame editing!
3. Easy sound support for homebrew
4. WHO KNOWS ?? It's like the keys are unlocked and alot of powerful homebrew applications can be made now that have lowlevel access to the system

How does the DLC work? If I have fantasy life, can I eventually just patch the DLC on with DEV kit or will I lose my save?

This also allows enough permissions for homebrew to brick your console, so be careful when you test stuff from random users.
