Hi,

I already searched the forums but couldn't find an answer.

I got 2 3ds with firmwares <4.5 but i still have NO gateway card.

I have already installed emunand with my R4, wich is running fine as far as I can test.

I tried updating emunand to the newest firmware (Omega 2.4b) via settings in classic mode.
Updating works, but after I restarted and tried to get in emunand classic mode, there is only a black screen.
I waited around 5-7 minutes but blackscreen won't disappear.

So do I need the red card inserted when updating emunand?

Can I try to update emunand with a retail cartridge?

Does anybody know what could have went wrong?

Thank you in advance

Thanks for the reply, but can You explain why the red card is needed?

Every step-by-step tutorial, I've seen so far, implies that you dont need the red card.

I think the only file handling your emunand is launcher.dat on SDCard.

If you are right, and I won't doubt it, I think we have to add this point to the tutorials.

basically i presume its for the simple reason of making sure only people who own the physical gateway card can use 7.x encrypted content it is their main selling point atm and they would prefer that clone users don't just get to play 7.x encrypted content even in classic mode

That makes sense. Do you know if I have to put in the red card everytime I use 9.x Emunand?
Or could I just borrow a red card to update until I own a redcard?

I think I will post that point in the update tutorial.

If you hold L to get the gateway menu you can go about you business there without a red card, except for booting emuNAND. You can boot into classic mode but it warns you about reduced features if you continue.

I just tried and it sent me to a black screen.

.....again you can't boot up emunand 8.x+ in any capacity without inserting the gateway card(including classic mode)....if you don't set up emunand or don't update emunand to 8.x+ you can use it without the gateway card

I was just stating my experience from when i just tried like 2 minutes ago.... It's just strange that they give you a warning and say press X to continue into classic mode. Well i suppose nothings strange when it comes to the chinese back-up hardware industry LOL

yeah the warning only appears if you don't insert the gateway card first, basically saying "some features will not work unless you insert the gateway card whilst booting".....these "features" they are talking about is 7.x decryption, and seeing as 8.x & 9.x both use 7.x encryption on the homescreen, which means you will be unable to boot them
