Hi guys!

I just bought a WiiU. I have a question regarding what to do with it, since it's on FW 3.1.

I plan on playing some games, notably Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros, Hyrule Warriors, some of the Mario games (Kart, 3d Land etc) and maybe others.

I remember reading Mario Kart 8 forces you to install FW 4.1. Any word on these other titles? From what I understand, I would want to keep my Wii U on the lowest FW possible (at least under 5.1.0) in hopes that an exploit may become public, but will that mean I'm unable to play some of these titles? Would I also be barred from playing online (Smash) unless I'm on the latest FW?

I know it's everyone's own choice. Still, what would you guys recommend?

It's a deluxe version so I was planning on either downloading some games or buying them online (since I cant get them from any retail stores where I live) so I guess if it's better/possible to play without going past 5.1.0 I'll start ordering some games online instead of trying to get that DDP promotion while it lasts. The benefit of the DDP is I can put everything on a HDD; when I move it's easier to bring one drive than 10-20 boxes. However, I really don't like how all that stuff will be tied only to this one WiiU and if anything happens to it... well... which is why I'm also not opposed to waiting for an exploit, if it ends up working like the 3DS does.

Im not sure if any of those games require an update, but, Its completley fine to update your Wii U. Its been said countless times that any hack that is ever released, if any are EVEN released, will work, or soon be available, on the latest version. I dont think anything major is actually going to happen for another few months at the least so I would just go ahead and update your Wii U.

As a side note, Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors and the Wii U Mario titles are all AMAZING games. Have fun dude ;)

EDIT: Oh, and not being on the latest firmware prevents you from doing anything online related such as: Playing online, downloading game updates, downloading games/DLC from the E-Shop, Miiverse, and video streaming apps.

Bayonetta 2? Yeah it's an awesome game and Mario Kart 8's very good too while the replay value still lasts but Hyrule Warriors? That's just a generic Dynasty Warriors game slapped with Zelda skin and there you go. Nothing amazing about Hyrule Warriors.

Well I enjoy it  I think the combat is fun and it has a lot of content. Also the graphics are quite good and the soundtrack is kick ass. Plus boobs

Right, I understand that mindset regarding any version up until an exploit becomes public should have the possibility of being exploitable. I was just wondering what those two mentioned exploits (one with a browser below 5.1.0) and one with something else (4.1.0) mean, if anything, in the future. I ask this because they're not compatible with 5.1.1 which is where the updating process will take me. Since people are also starting dump WiiU games online I wonder if this is a hint for what's to come as well. Again, I just ask for an opinion because I'm not well versed with that these mean in the short/long term.

i.e., 5.1.0 might be the last usable firmware for a future exploit and I have a Wii on 3.1.0 and shoot myself in the foot to save 20 bucks with the eshop DDP

I guess I'll think about it a little more. The only reason I'd decide to update today, is so I can start downloading games now rather than wait a week for a disc to arrive (and also get those 5$ discount things)

Any other games you might recommend? I think I remember Wonderful life or something being popular...

I've never played a Dynasty Warrior game so I think I could have at least a little fun with Hyrule Warriors.

Like I said, whatever hack that gets released is going to be compatible with whatever firmware is the newest at the time, and nothing is gonna happen for a long time. Even though the current exploit was patched, the Wii U Browser still has plenty of bugs and if it can be hacked on an earlier version, then maybe we can find more exploits for recent versions. Anyway, Its your choice but I would just update.

Wii U discs have also been being dumped for a while now, they arent useable yet.

I think the PS3 and the 3DS are perfect examples of why you "should not" update ...if you are not bothered with the possibility of future homebrew, "piracy" :) , cfw's, etc etc then update ...but the lower the firmware the better!

Like the moment Gateway 3DS was announced, I updated my 3DS to the latest firmware and at the time and thought I was all set ....and then the news came that it needed to be fw 4.1-4.5 ...so I had to sell my console to buy another, with the correct firmware.

I have two Wii U consoles, one on 3.0 and the other one the firmware MK8 (would not recommend to buy) comes with?? ...just in hopes that something will be released

iQue, did you mean you don't recommend MK8 because of the game itself or because of the firmware upgrade 4.1?

I guess I still have a few days to think about whether to download or buy Bayo2, heh. I would mainly use an upgrade to download them onto an HDD but as mentioned I don't like N's system of games being tied to my console. Though with that in mind, since mine is used, if I try to use the eShop, will I be able to download anything the guy who previously owned it bought? He didn't delete his stuff from the looks of it, but I did a system format to get rid of all his Miis since they were password locked.

I know what you mean though, about having dumb luck and upgrading at the wrong time is something that often happens to me.

With that in mind, does the eShop use paypal or anything? I have a Chinese paypal that would be more convenient to use than a US paypal/credit card.

I bought my second Wii U last week. First was purchased on launch night and then returned because of the lack of games available or announced. And I have to say, I am once again going to return it, probably would have regardless, considering come holiday season there will be much better deals going on, $50 off, $50 gift cards, free games on top of the bundled games, ect.

But I probably won't even bite then, there is a serious lack of reason to buy a $300 console when there's only a handful of games that are even remotely interesting. Nintendo seems to have completely forgotten about multiple franchises that more or less forced me and millions of others to buy their consoles. Where's F-Zero, Metroid, Waverace, 1080? Everything from Mario's voice actor, to the sound library they use for their music, has become progressively more annoying over the years. I've supported Nintendo through most of my life, but the reality is, they truly have become more and more childish over the years, which isn't at all what got them where they are today. Not to mention, most Nintendo fans are full grown adults.

What's even more disappointing about the lack of games, is that, their hardware is still fun and innovative, as has always been the case. Unlike the other idiotic wannabe video game companies who do nothing but release the same old outdated, boring shit with upgraded specs and steal ideas from Nintendo at every opportunity.

If you haven't played Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed then get it. The Wii U version is considered the best among home console ports (according to Digital Foundry) and in my mind its much better than Mario Kart 8. Its harder and has a career mode giving you a lot more stuff to do.

EDIT: Oh, and these days the game is super cheap too.
