Hi, I already own a 3DS XL on latest firmware.. I was looking to buy a 3DS to use a gateway with, I have been looking around and just not sure, I was looking at this on amazon the ice white regular

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

as you can see it's abit of a gamble... so can anyone tell me the odds this will have the 4.1-4.5 firmware? or should i go with a different one.

If you are really only looking for a plain non-XL 3DS, just get one from Amazon. I got mine (snow white) a few months ago there and it shipped with firmware 2.1.0-4E (which you can update to 4.x using any 4.x game card).

If it ends up shipping with a bad firmware, you can still just return it.

86 pages of chat regarding what/where/how to find a 4.5 3DS HERE. like 3 topics down on the second page. Does anyone actually venture past the first page these days?

That thread is about XLs, not plain 3DS models. At least that's what the title suggests, and what most of the posts in the thread are about anyway.

You can update to 4.5 with Animal Crossing.
^ this, but only using the European version. I updated to 4.5.0 using that version of the game. There's a more complete list of "safe" games on http://www.eurasia.nu/wiki/index.php/3DS_Games_with_firmware_updates_in_the_4.1_-_4.5_range .

If you don't own any of the games on that list you can still just borrow a game from a friend for 5 minutes to use for updating.

Well, great for your purchase bro, but I think you shouldn't be "lazy" and should take a walk around major electronics store in your town (that sell Nintendo ofc).
I mean I would never depend on the will of Amazon, better to hold device in my hands, and be completely sure (following the serial instructions). Besides you could save a buck, on some local deal, I am sure in it.

@ Newborn. Its a massive gamble bud that 3DS on Amazon you have taken!!!, I would not of done it, it could of been updated I doubt very much its just been standing there since 2012 and when they say brand new they don't mean literally brand new, it could of been unboxed at anytime and updated, its a massive gamble you take tbh and you will never know until you get it home and check and if its not on 4.5.0 or below you then can not return it to amazon unless its faulty because you can't tell amazon look I want a refund asap because its not on firmware 4.5.0 or below cause I wanted to use a Gateway flashcard card on it to run piracy software, m8 they will laugh at you and say a big fat NO! Personally I would of looked around before you purchased that.

Just look in stores or buy a 3DS with firmware 4.5 from ebay. The serial number and the model is important.
I've tried this in the past and I nearly got kicked out of Walmart or go to a second hand video game store to look for a 4.5 firmware console.

I would have no problem doing that, if my town had such stores because it doesn't ;p

sure it's a gamble.. but I have heard many stories of people buying off amazon, and most of the time its fine, but as you said I won't know till it arrives.

I thought that it was mainly XL units that are rare in terms of 4.5 FW. As I recall most original model 3DS are still on 4.5 or older for the most part. (assuming you didn't buy a used unit that was updated by a previous customer)

You can always check your local Pawn Shops. That's where I found mine. (though I later updated it to latest firmware since I still can't afford to get a Gateway). Unlike most stores, you can actually test it an check the firmware on it without buying it first. That's pretty much normal practice at pawn shops so you won't have issues checking the FW on them. ;)

Unless you are looking to get one in new condition then you'll need to check serial numbers and such when at retail stores or when buying one new online. Don't just go and blindly buy one. Especially used units or on online retailers like Amazon where there is the possibility that it's a used unit, but just in mint condition so the seller just lists it as new or "Like New" condition.

"Like New" condition just means it was previously owned, but has no cosmetic defects at all and looks brand new still. But it's Russian Roulette in terms of finding one on 4.5 FW. :P
