Is it worth waiting for the 3DS to be hacked or should I straight up just buy the game cartridges myself? (although I don't really want to.. here in India official game cartridges cost 2x the price it would be if it was sold directly by Nintendo)

Umm, the 3DS is actually hacked, although in order to download games from the internet and play them, it requires extra hardware in the form of a 3DS cartridge called Gateway 3DS. Beware, there is cheaper alternatives to a Gateway 3DS but these are inferior copies of the same product. Gateway is the best.

If you are asking for a free solution for playing ROM games then you will be waiting a very long time!

I know the 3DS is hacked, but my 3DS isn't on 4.1-4.5, so I was asking if it would be worth waiting for a hack to come for 4.5+ or just buy the official cartridges. I don't mind spending money on a flashcard.

though the eshop is more expensive than western retail, shouldn't games be at least cheaper than in your retail shops?

Here games are usually around 4000 INR (roughly 65 USD).

Oh, right, sorry! I saw the 1 post count and thought you might not have known that

Hate to be a doomsday sayer but support for above 4.5 system menu will maybe never happen. There is a new revision of the 3DS coming out very shortly and I dare say that the companies who have financial interests in 3DS piracy (i.e Gateway) will turn their sights to the new console.

All the big name 3DS devs who have the skills and equipment to hunt for kernel exploits all take an 'anti-piracy' stance unfortunately for some.

:c, anyways thanks for replying. Guess I'll just buy the official cartridges then.

why would they set sights to the new console, considering that its probably even harder to hack/exploit than the 3ds was, its userbase will be comparably smaller and chances are generally higher to work something out on newer 3ds firmwares, once the new exploits are released?
especially those with financial interest in piracy will probably remain with the normal 3ds for quite a bit of time

It's just my personal point of view. No evidence to support it except for the fact Gateway team has been working for over a year on 6.x support to no avail speaks for itself. Gateway team would/does have a team of highly skilled reverse engineers, developers and RAM dumping equipment etc. If they can't do it, well good luck to anyone else!

I want it to happen but I'm just being realistic here. 9 times out of 10, wishful thinking leads to disappointment every time.

This is pretty true... unless some huge first party game (like Pokemon, TLoZ etc.) is confirmed to only work on the new Nintendo 3DS. Then I'm pretty sure some users would be willing to switch to the new console.

It is worth, believe me. But i dont guess, that there will be ever any flashcards for the 3DS over Firmware 4.5.
Just order from official sellers if you are interested in Gateway. There are fakes out.

it always makes me wonder when people are asking when is 3DS going to be hacked for fw 4.5+..... why don't you just buy a 3DS with fw 4.1-4.5 from ebay?? brand new one is around US$200-250. You spend the price of 5-6 retail games then you can get thousdands of games for free

If you're a Nintendo fan then sure, and if not then don't.
3DS isn't that great like everone says, it has some good games like SMT IV and Rune Factory 4 and that's it.
The 1st party line is mediocre and some of the game have limitations(eg. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on 3DS doesn't have online)
Have tried Mario Land 3D,Luigi's Mansion 2,NSMB2 and Animal Crossing New Leaf and surprisingly only liked Animal Crossing(even thou i couldn't get into the series with the old iterations of the game)
So if you're a Nintendo fan then do get one, if not and if ur interested in couple of games then i would suggest a Gateway compatible 3DS.

I am a hardcore Nintendo fanboy, and I know that the 3DS didn't have the greatest games available (honestly I only bought the 3DS just for Pokemon and Mario), but yeah I suppose that is what I'll have to look for.

Sure I guess, but matter of a fact is that finding a 4.1-4.5 3DS here in India is pretty difficult as it is. I am contacting sellers though. Actually found a seller that had the same idea as I did: sell a 3DS with a higher firmware for money, and then use that money to buy a 4.1-4.5 3DS.

Don't worry, I'll buy from reputable sellers :)

Will take that site into consideration. I think smealum currently is waiting for the new 3DS to come out before releasing his exploit.
