  • New Themes for Nintendo 3DS HOME Menu: Following a system update in October, Nintendo will be introducing new Nintendo 3DS HOME menu themes that change the menu background, icons and folders, and music and sound effects. Themes will be available for purchase from a Theme Shop that will be added to the HOME menu. More details will be announced in the future.
So, the 3DS will be getting some new features and functionality come this October, including theming of the System Menu. Below in the spoiler are some images from the Nintendo Japan site detailing on these themes:

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds:

Animal Crossing: New Leaf:

Mario:

There's also a function now mapped to the Y button (Perhaps to open the Photo Album?), as well as a complete overhaul of the top bar on the Touch Screen (Note the missing brightness button, but now a Home Settings button), as well as a lack of icons along the top of the Top Screen.

What do you think of these updates? Do you think Nintendo would consider opening up the door to allowing custom themes? Are there any themes that you hope to see? Will this be the firmware 9.X, or perhaps even 10.X if 9.X is released sometime in September? Could some of these changes be pushed to the Wii U?

the brightness setting is still there, it's grouped in home settings ( upper left corner lower screen )
also there will be a button leading to theme shop, I guess few of them will be free
the Y button seems to be a screenshot button, maybe to show off the games you have and the skins? hopefully we get in game screenshots too

It looks like that, I don't or can't even imagine another function with that icon :D.

Yes because Nintendo only has one programmer........... That have hundreds to thousands of software developers, so what if a team of three of them are put aside to make themes........doesn't delay or prevent anything else from being made.

Yeah have you seen the Wii U's library? maybe those developers can be more productive.
