Yes I'm a caveman because I don't think DSiWare is equal to cartridge games. and Obsolete means "out of date" or "replaced with a newer model".
It is being replaced by a newer model, yes, but the old model is not being phased, continues to be supported and as such is not "obsolete", that is unless today is Opposite Day and you can make more money selling games to 0 users than to 44 million users.

By the way, again, not "just DSiWare". DSiWare, a small number of exclusive games and a slew of DSiEnhanced games, all content that you couldn't access on a normal DS. We're talking about literally the exact same situation here.

There is something that does puzzle me though. We've been through E3, Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show is still up ahead... why reveal this now? Why not make a grand reveal on a conference where the eyes of the whole world are upon you? Why all this sneakyness? Nobody's going to convince me that they've wrapped this redesign up in a weekend - this was in the works for at least a year.

Perhaps it's yet another demonstration that Nintendo understand the importance of the social media.

Don't be ridiculous, Nintendo doesn't understand Social Media, they act as if they found out about the Internet yesterday and it's reflected by their poor services and silly policies.

I don't care about backwards comp. because.... It will take 3 years for homebrew :nds:. Then another year for crappy DS Emulator is out with 2 compatible roms at 3 FPS and 5 at 0-1 FPS!

Is that all you care about...?

Yes, and don't forget the loved "No super smash bros cutscenes cuz internet is mean and made by the devil" fiasco.

You wont, you find out quickly the 3d is just a gimmick and uneeded as well as being a huge waste of battery life

Backwards compatibility is a nice addition, but should never be a make-or-break feature - it's great to have if your original design can support it, but if it can't and the industry is nearing a technological jump, it should be skipped in favour of more recent, relevant technology. If not for the insistence on BC, perhaps the Wii U wouldn't be in nearly as much trouble as it is in now.

Back to the N3DS though, there's another reason why I'm happy about the second stick - it will now be the default configuration for all N3DS users. This means more dual analog support, and more dual analog support is something I value dearly. This could not be achieved by just the CPP add-on which was not a necessary purchase for 3DS users and as such unpopular and broadly unsupported. Now that all the new 3DS systems have a second analog, developers should put more focus on implementing that in their control schemes.

I agree my friend not only that but games that required that bulky circle pad will benefit from the the addition of the second analog stick on N3DS :)

What do you mean. Homebrew or DS back comp. I care about Homebrew because its awesome. People can play "their" "backups" "legally". Homebrew games like ports and such. DS back comp. because when DSI came out it didn't have DSI-mode only games.

My. Fucking. God.

YOU say I'm a fucking caveman for not thinking DSiWare games are super awesome, that's why I replied to DSiWare titles!!!!!!!!
Also, the DSi was released 5 years after the DS. it offered smaller downloadable titles that the DS COULDN'T DO. It had 4 exclusive retail games, and since they were region locked (Because they were, right?) there were 1 in Japan, 2 in NA, 2 in EU, and 1 in AU. It had some enhanced games. sure. Quite many games in fact, most of them utilizing the camera. It's not something extremely important for the over all experience (in my eyes). Voice chat isn't either for me, but I know many people like it so I'll give you that. and that Cop: the recruit ran better, alright.

Still, the N3DS doesn't have any gimmick to enhance the games with and not offering an e-shop and firmware updates that the 3DS doesn't have...

Would you mind posting a source for this? I've been looking this up on Google, and can't find any details (the fact that it's called "New 3DS" makes googling it about as hard as looking up details on various Xbox models thanks to the naming schemes).

Games that require use of the GBA slot or other peripherals cannot be played on the New 3DS/New 3DS LL. But other DS/DSi games can.

At the very bottom:

Also, the description for the game slot card on the Specs page for the New 3DS models says, "You can also use DS/DSi cards."

Why so mad? What I said was that disregarding a game because it's "not on a cartridge" is backwards thinking because it is. Take PC gamers for instance - do you know many who still buy physical releases? I don't - they've all migrated to Steam and other such services.

Glad that we agree here - the DSi didn't have a lot to entice users to upgrade, which is why I hope the N3DS will.

Except NFC, of course. Although that might get an add-on of sorts for the 3DS. Besides, sometimes the specs themselves are enough to "Enhance" a game substantially. Metal Gear Solid 3D was brought up already - that game ran at what, 15 FPS and dipped lower under stress? Imagine it running at a smooth 30 - isn't that "worth it" in and out of itself? I think it is.

I would hope so, yes. For all intents and purposes, this could be good news for CPP owners who were craving for some new games supporting their add-on. :P

In other words, it can play the same exact DS games that the original 3DS and 3DS XL can? Are there any 3DS games that require special peripherals?

Anyway, thanks. This is very welcome news. :)

Edit: Just found this list from one of the links you gave, supposedly saying a list of games, games with certain features the New 3DS/XL won't support. http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ds/series/dsi/feature/index.html

I get mad because in the replies before this, we talk about all software, you say i disregard dsiware, i reply about dsiware, you reply that it's not just dsiware but other software as well...
Anyway, I might've overreacted. I don't disregard downloadable titles, not at all! and I think my 350 game library on steam testifies of that. However, I don't think that the DSiWare titles were all that fleshed out as retail games were. Actually, I find most of them lacking. However, the DS didn't have the ability to get those downloadable games. It was impossible without a hardware update, since it didn't have firmware updates, couldn't get the new store or anything like that, and didn't have any storage. It didn't have the ability to take photographs because it didn't have a camera.

Exactly, the DSi didn't have a lot to entice users to upgrade. In my eyes, that's like saying it was just some extra non important bonus.

Oh yeah, I forgot about NFC (because that's something I personally find so utterly uninteresting). So that's a point to you again. :P
And yes, the specs themselves are enough to enhance the game, of course! But upgraded specs is something I feel should be for a successor, not a "slight upgrade". (And yes, I know the DSi had upgraded specs as well, but most games did not make use of that, with some exceptions of course). If MGS3D can run better, that's awesome! But if this will lead to most new games running like shit on the 3DS, it will be a kick in the balls for early adopters. If everything will be designed with better specs in mind I mean.
Which also leads me to my next question...

I would hope so, yes. For all intents and purposes, this could be good news for CPP owners who were craving for some new games supporting their add-on. :P

Will games that are developed for the N3DS that needs the second control nub and four shoulder buttons work with the CPP at all? Or will it be exclusive to the N3DS since not every 3DS owner has a CPP. That would make it hard for the customers to make sure they have the required add-on etc. Or will every game be forced to have a CPP-less option for the controls as well?
Just because the N3DS has a second stick and 4 shoulder buttons, does it mean that the CPP will stop being a useless piece of plastic?

In conclusion what I am pissed about:
3 Years ago I bought the 3DS for US $360. Now a revision comes out with "better specs", not just an added camera or online functions (downloadable games, voice chat, better encryption).
It feels to me that I'm getting punished for supporting them early on. I can't help that.
In other cases it has been that the tech has evolved. Brighter screens, backlight, (better) online functions... which I find acceptable.
