I'm really puzzled by this hardware revision.

Why the name "New 3DS"? That's gotta be the most sloppiest name I have ever come across. Given that Nintendo actually put more powerful CPU and has games that do require this new CPU, it makes sense to differentiate it completely. Has Nintendo forgot the consumer confusion behind 3DS and Wii U when they were announced?

Also I question its design. If you are going to put second analog stick on 3DS it makes better sense to move A/B/X/Y down and put larger sticks on the top. But no...., Nintendo prefers smaller analog stick instead.

The gameboy color was a brand new system that succeeded the gameboy, im not sure why people are referring to it as the same thing

Because some GBC games were compatible with the original Gameboy before every game were only playable on the GBC. Same thing here, they'll do the backward compatibility and soon only games for the new 3DS

Yeah. I'm scared of it :( Especially couse i just bought 3DS XL.

I freaking bought a 3DS XL last year ! And its already obsolete ?! This is the Gameboy and Gameboy Color era again !
>Implying Nintendo ever moved on from that point

Let's take a cold look at Nintendo's "Revisionist Habit", shall we?
  • NES/Famicom -> NES/Famicom Toploader (no significant hardware change other than the form-factor)
  • Game Boy -> Game Boy Pocket (no significant change) -> Game Boy Light (introduction of the front light) -> Game Boy Color (introduction of a faster CPU, colour screen, exclusive Game Boy Color software)
  • Virtual Boy
  • SNES/SuperFami -> SNES Mini/SuperFami Jr. (no signigicant hardware change) -> StellaView (add-on, exclusive software)
  • Nintendo 64 -> Nintendo 64 + Expansion Pak (add-on, exclusive software) -> Nintendo 64 DD (add-on, exclusive software)
  • Game Boy Advance -> Game Boy Advance SP (introduction of the frontlight) -> Game Boy Advance SP AGB-101 (introduction of the backlight) -> Game Boy Advance Micro (no significant hardware change)
  • Gamecube
  • DS -> DS Lite (no significant hardware change) -> DSi (improved CPU clock, amount of memory, wifi communication and added SD card slot, exclusive software) -> DSi XL (no significant hardware change)
  • Wii -> Wii v.2 (no significant hardware change other than dropped GC ports) -> Wii Mini (no significant change other than dropped ports and WiFi)
  • 3DS -> 3DS XL (no significant harwdare change) -> New 3DS/3DS XL (improved CPU, possibly also memory, exclusive software)
Only two of their systems never saw any revisions or important add-ons, so... uhm... :)

It really depends on how you look at it. To Nintendo, the GBC and DSi were
"revisions", to me they were too substantially different to be considered such and I too think that they're separate systems, but that's going against the official grain. ;)

This got me thinking. With all that the New line added, it's almost like it's a Wii U Gamepad + 3DS combined together, so they may be making it to also be used for playing Wii U games (streamed to it like the Gamepad). I say almost because the touch screen is not wide-screen (and the obvious resolution difference). If this is part of their intent, then they may be in the process of making Wii U games that utilize more than one Gamepad.

Also, though this is kinda out in left field, they may be prepping for the rumored "Fusion".

I'll be getting one, I already have a 2DS which I think was a thousand times better then the 3DS and I have a 3DS so I'll be getting this as well :)

Virtual Boy bombed, and GameCube received a hardware revision that dropped digital A/V port used for component video.
Never heard of that one, thanks for the tip. I don't treat such minor revisions as relevant, similarly I didn't note that the SNES had a few versions - one with an integrated sound circuit and one with a modular one, if not more than that. I did hear about the Panasonic Q though, although Panasonic's to "thank" or "blame" for that one. :P
How cute, you even made it green.
You're welcome - I went through the effort of formatting the text for your reading pleasure. :P

I wouldn't be surprised if the better processor is used to deliver exclusive VC titles. And I wonder if these revisions have been made so they can be used as a replacement for the wii-u control pad.

Panasonic Q failed primarily because Nintendo charged a premium on license fee, forcing Panasonic to sell them at ridiculous price.

To be fair, the Panasonic Q was what the Gamecube should've been from the start features-wise - I hope Nintendo will one day understand the value of making a well-rounded entertainment center and not "just a console" when the hardware can clearly "handle it".

I'm afraid that's only going to happen when Iwata steps down.

Interesting. This appears to be more like the DS lite, and I loved my DS lite. Perfect buttons (especially D-Pad), slim design, durability. Considering I have yet to get the original 3DS, this may be an option.
On the subject of the name, going by the colors of the ABXY buttons, the Western name may end up being "Super 3DS" or something.
Just a thought.
