Hey there everyone. I managed to get my hands on a NTSC-U Debug PS1 unit and readup that it was able to play backups! Now I've tried making some backups and burning them onto some Virbatim CD-Rs. My problem is that this debug unit can't seem to boot any of the cds I've burnt. One of them has gotten to the PS1 splash screen, but then doesn't load any more. I'm thinking that the disc drive has failed, but I have no real way of testing it. Putting in other disks (like Dreamcast or Saturn games) I am able to listen to the audio track that warns that this game was meant to be played on their respective systems, but I feel like the head isn't moving.

Is there any way to easily test if the drive's head is moving properly, and if it is busted, will a 440BAM drive be a suitable replacement. If this was a standard ps1 I wouldn't bother asking about the replacement drive, but I want my debug unit to be pristine.

If it is reading audio tracks, then the head is moving fine and the laser is working fine.

I suspect your PS1 will read burned disks... but they need to be in some special format to play on it. This is just a guess on my part and probably some one who knows way more than I do will come correct me.

Do retail discs work? I would also try different media to rule that out. Have you tried playing a burned audio cd to rule out the discs?

Thanks, I was following this guide - http://www.theisozone.com/tutorials/psx/burning-and-backup/ps1psx-burning-101-bincue-and-iso-only/

My only other guess, is that my drive can only burn at 10x lowest, and that is too fast, causing errors

a drive which write slower doesn't mean it will cause errors, if a drive writes "too fast" its because its technology is advanced enough to be error safe (unless you own a shaddy chinese low budged cd burner)...

if you writed and verify the copy (most software have a "verify the disc" checkbox) and it doesnt give you any errors then it should be fine...

When I try to verify, I get a "Layouts do not match" and verification fails. I'm using the latest version of imgBurn, and burning usually takes a few tries before it burns properly.

After testing burns a bit more, it seems that most of the disks don't actually get burnt? They are CD-R but I can actually burn something onto the disk after burning an image to it. So, that's weird.

Did you burn it as an image file, not a data disc. Try a different brand of CD or burn it faster. I burn at 52x on Verbatim or Sony with imgBurn.

Edit: Never use CD-RW, even if it worked, it would but a lot of strain on your laser.

Hey all, I figured out what was wrong. The drive I was using before just sucked, I burnt it on an older drive I had that has been very good in the past, and it worked. Thanks for the help everyone!
