The model number is not important. The version needs to be between 4.1 and 4.5. If it is too low, update using an actual game card. Never use the internet to update. If version is 5.0 or higher, you are not going to be able to use the Gateway, currently.
i haven´t made the purchase yet but i want to know if the in 3nds xl serial number (sw10001) have a firmware installed by default with gateway supported.
The highest reported Nintendo Serial Number that came with 4.5.0:

If the one you are interested in has serial sw10001 then it is most likely below 4.5. To use a gateway you will need firmware versions 4.1 to 4.5. My guess based on that serial number is that it might even be below 4.1 in which case you would need to get a game that was released on 4.1 to 4.5 and load the new firmware using that game. Also, if it is not a new and sealed package there is a good chance its been upgraded to firmware above 4.5. Anyway I hope that helps.

Please note that you need an original game to do this update, it will not work using a copy.

I didn't know they made an MSU cart for the Genesis.... I knew about the SNES one and the library for that is rather large but the Genesis one has very few games+1 -
